Rutgers and Connecticut (or even USF and BYU) would be better additions in a vacuum, but we're not in a vacuum.
That's what I eventually see happening. It just works out logistically to add Louisville and Cincinnati to bridge the gap between WVU and Iowa State and the Kansas schools. It also helps naturally split the Big 12 into North/South divisions.

The teams that look like they're going to get left out barring some conference coming to their rescue are UConn, Rutgers, USF, and BYU.

This is a statement from our AD that just came out. Should I be optimistic or nervous?

Quote:
The landscape in collegiate athletics continues to be a very fluid situation and we continue to be involved in discussions. We remain extremely confident that the result once the movement concludes will be very positive for Rutgers University.

While there is going to be a period of time between now and then that will cause our constituents and fans a certain level of anxiety, given the unique assets we possess, including our strong and growing academic profile, our AAU status and the location and high level of interest surrounding Rutgers in the nation’s largest television market, we feel confident in the end result for Rutgers.

Nervous. That statement says nothing, and they will try to spin anything (Conference USA) as a positive.

I do agree that Rutgers and Connecticut belong in big conferences due to TV if nothing else.

Per Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman: Spoke with BCS' Bill Hancock today, said new BCS deal will be negotiated over next 9 months. Terrible timing for Boise State, Big East.

In a sane world the Big 12 would go ahead and take Cincinnati and Louisville along with West Virginia to get back to 12. The Big Ten could then take UConn and Rutgers or Notre Dame and Rutgers to get to 14 while the ACC took one of UConn/Rutgers along with USF.

That way ESPN and the networks are likely happy that all the football teams in the Big East found a way to stay in BCS conferences and realignment stops.

I am convinced the Big 10 is happy and is gonna stay with 12 teams. I mean they pretty much have the midwest teams for football to themselves cuz Kansas, Kansas State (this year is kind of a blip rather than a trend), Iowa State, and the MAC just aren't good. But I'd be surprised if UConn is just left out there, I know this is all about football and all, but UConn are the basketball champs, and would be a good pickup for that. Perhaps they could be 15 and Rutgers 16 if the ACC chooses to go to 16.

I'm not saying they are like it's a definite thing but there is a possibility albeit slight that they could. While they don't improve the overall football product they do offer an AAU school along with another very good academic school while opening up the NYC market for the B1G Network.

But when comparing them to the homeruns of Penn State and Nebraska they're more like base hits.

I don't think the Big Ten is going to do anything until they feel like they can get their hands on Notre Dame. Delaney only likes to swing for the fences.

Adding Rutgers or Connecticut means less money for everyone else. You only add a team if they increase your collective potential earnings. Unless you're the ACC, because you clearly have no idea how expansion works.

Correct. It all depends on how much the Big Ten thinks they can get out of the cable companies in the New York/Philadelphia area by adding Rutgers. Whatever amount they charge would have to be enough to add money to the pot for each team.

Exactly. I know how expansion works which is why I only bring up teams that would bring in the biggest tv market in the country for the Big Ten while following their strict academic guidelines. Obviously Notre Dame would be a home run and I could see that happening in time especially with the demise of the Big East evident.

I can get not adding UConn. But if, IF the Big Ten does expand the first target is Notre Dame. If they can't get ND they don't go after anyone else. But if they do get ND they need a 14th team. The best option would be Rutgers because they fit the academic guidelines and would bring in tv ratings with Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State playing right next to NYC.

saw on twitter that WVU is "50-50" to join Big 12 and that it's a tossup with L'ville.Louisville makes more sense geographically then WVU does

Who is in charge the Big East Expansion efforts? Whoever it is single-highhandedly destroyed the conference. They could have invited some teams early in the process, but instead the Big East decided they would just raise their exit fee. Then they didn't even raise their exit fee and continued to delay inviting teams. I have heard rumors that they would invite UCF, Houston, East Carolina, SMU, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Boise State, yet none of them are members yet. The Big East needs to fire whoever is in charge of this.

Funny thing is, Notre Dame's AD I believe is in chair for the Expansion committee for the Big East.

They are but Marinatto is the guy in charge of the Big East and as I ranted a few weeks ago he's literally a moron. They still run the Big East like a basketball conference and it's killed them. Rutgers fand and other fans of the football schools have hated him for years.

Are you sure? If Louisville leaves, you are left with West Virginia, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Connecticut, and South Florida. That's five teams. Who are they going to add? Would Boise State, UCF, Houston, SMU, East Carolina, and Air Force leave the MWC/C-USA merger which could get a bid itself to go to Big East whose future is shaky, to say the least.

Another reason why they are dumb. This whole conference expansion thing is centered around football, but I would not be shocked to see them add Memphis, who is piss poor in football with no fan support whatsoever, just because it would benefit the basketball side of the conference.

Part me of thinks they actually want all the football schools to leave so they can get money through the exit fees and then add basketball schools like Memphis, Xavier, etc. and have a powerful Big East basketball conference. I don't think it makes sense money wise but it's the only plausible reason I can think of right now besides the obvious of terrible leadership in an important time.

Didn't they talk about that at one point? Splitting the basketball only schools and the football playing schools?

It's been rumored by some people but it's never been discussed openly.
