I was a big fan of Battle Realms. If you like the military ones, you might like Commandos.

Might have to get DOSBox or something to get it to run on newer OS's. That game is ******* old. Older than WC1 isn't it?

Argh, costs on building my new computer are mounting up so quickly, haha. The actually components of my computer are quite good, but I found some pretty awesome deals so in total it's probably a computer worth about $1800, but I managed to build it for about $700.
However, because my old monitor broke I will need a new one, which is of course pricey. Also this Dell Vista software I have for my laptop is OEM so I'm going to have to buy the full version (non-OEM) of Windows 7 because I plan to upgrade this new computer at some point in the near future, thus making the OEM a waste of money.
For a quality monitor that can be used for gaming; as well as a new OS, it's probably going to cost me $400 for those two things alone.
I is a sad panda. :(

600-700 is probably around my budget for all builds as well. Can get good quality parts with above average stats and reputable brands (something which I believe is very important). Anything above that is usually just stupid ricer gear that serves no purpose.
Forenci, just download windows 7, plenty of cracks to make it 'genuine.'
As for monitor, I've been using an off brand 22 inch LCD for the last 3 years, hasn't failed me yet. Though I really want to buy dual HD 24 inch monitors. =(

I'm probably going to be getting a LCD. I swore I never would because for gaming they can be somewhat poor, but they really have improved over the years. Admittedly, part of my reasoning stems from my freshman year of college when I use to have a desktop computer with a CRT monitor and lugging that **** back and forth during winter/spring break was a pain so this would make it a bit easier.
$200 was a rough figure, but I'm trying to get it with 2ms (GTG) response time, if possible, since it's quite important for gaming. I don't really want a huge screen as some people prefer, so hopefully that can cut my costs a bit.
As for Window 7, the cheapest I've seen is $176 for full version of home premium.

i've found the 2ms is massively overrated. i'm at about 8ms gray-gray (iirc) and there's no streaking or blurring in any game i've ever played. i understand the CRT stuff, but i think lcds are good enough now that there should be near to no difference (at least at the point where you could reasonably ever move the CRT).
win7 appears to be $66 or so when i just googled it, though from work i can't tell if that's an upgrade price. if it is, i'd be tempted to pick up a copy of XP on like, ebay, then buy the upgrade version. still likely to be ~$100 cheaper, all in.

It's definitely an upgrade. You won't find full retail for much cheaper than 170.
I'm not to sure about the monitors though. My brother has a bit higher ms (4-6?) on his LCD and I do notice some mild ghosting on it.

i dunno, it's been forever since i bought a full OS (i run XP at home). i'll take your word for it, though i still think the ebay xp->7 path is probably quite a bit cheaper.
in any case, what i found when i bought my last lcd, was that the response time numbers were generally overblown, based on quality of the actual monitor. for instance, my viewsonic at 6-8ish, had basically no ghosting. an 8ms samsung (i think, it's been a while) that i checked out would've made civ largely unplayable.
now, granted i've never had a super high end video card (though it was always more than enough to play anything but crysis), so at ultra high settings, you might notice some of the edges not being quite as crisp. but i don't recall ever even having a brief moment of distraction from ghosting or blurring.

Yeah, I'm planning a trip to Microcenter (amazing deals there if you can ever get to one) to look at some monitors in person before I make any decisions. With LCD's it's important to see them yourself or you can get royally screwed by crappy contrast/brightness, even when they supposedly have good specs in that regard.
My old CRT Viewsonic lasted me like 8 years before it finally died. It was so awesome, other than when I had to carry it anywhere since it weighed a billion pounds.

I've bought most of my PC components from Newegg.com, they should have some spanky deals on displays. As for the response time, it will be more noticeable the more powerful your rig is. I currently use a 4ms Viewsonic LCD, and it's fine, but a previous screen I had was 6-8ms and it showed ghosting on games where my framerate was ripping. Since the price difference isn't really that dramatic, go as low as you can afford.

Newegg, microcenter and tiger direct. Those are my "Big 3." I pick out my the parts I want and then buy them at whichever of the 3 has it cheapest.
Sometimes I fall prey to their deals though :)

The last computer I built (the one I'm on now) was purchased all from Newegg and Tiger Direct and I built it for about $400 cheaper than I had budgeted. I love those sites.
