Yes and no.

Everyone understands that not making mistakes is what wins and loses football games. But I watched that game, and it's not like the Giants weren't executing or were struggling. They just made a couple of really big mistakes in key moments.

Thanks for the laugh Mort. Not sure how anyone can place teams with 1-3 records at this point as being in the top quarter of their conference. Not trying to be an ass, but consider actual records first.

Consult this link before compiling any more 'mid-season' reports after week 5.

The Detroit Lions are the highest scoring team in the NFC.

Just thought that should be said somewhere.

Score all the points you want....it only takes allowing one more than you score to lose.

Leave it to a Jets fans to question that. Any moron could tell what I meant but of course the newbie with the Rex Ryan middle finger avatar had to question it.

lolerskates at putting the Colts and San Diego up in the AFC elite while keeping the pats back for not having a great defense.

And am I the only one who doesn't see it with the Giants? Yes they have a ton of rushers who can get after the QB, but they got absolutely drubbed by the Colts and the Titans. I like the offense outside of the offensive line, but they need to start giving Eli time and the receivers need to get some stickem.
Actually we got owned by the Colts, but ask any Titans fan and we dominated that game, expect for the fact we shoot ourselves in the foot in the red zone, and turned the ball over. Eventually the Titans stuck with it and scored to further their lead. Plus don't forget the fact we have a new DC too. It takes a while to get used to the scheme. It's not like magic where we start out dominating. Even in the 2007 season, under Spags, we lost 2 games and gave up A LOT of points before settling in.

How did we do after those two loses? Did we respond or fade away? Didn't Tiki say Coughlin lost the team? LOL. How did that go Tiki?

The Colts game I knew we'd lose. The Titans game was ours, but credit the Titans for taking adv. of our mistakes. But that's a game we should have had. Oh, well we responded VERY well against a good Bears and Houston team. Now we just need to build off it.

It's deja vu from 2008. Remember you guys started out 0-2, the team hadn't gotten used to Spags' scheme yet and was giving up a ton of points, and Coughlin wasn't even going to make it to the bye week.

Then you rolled off like 8 straight wins or something and eventually made it to the Superbowl.

Yup.. Spag's defense stunk when we first hired him. After our 0-2 start, we beat the redskins on a goal line stand to jump start things..

First two games under spags.. Dallas scored 45 and GB scored 35... 80 points in two games!!!! So scheme and adjusting to a new DC are vital factors. We are finally adjusting to Fewell after hiring that filth Bill Sheridan. People forget were a VERY good team, in terms of talent, before Sheridan took control and drove the defense into the ground. Our FA signings of Canty and Rocky B were hurt. Osi came back from injury, TUck was hurt, AP was hurt, and KP was on IR.. It was a mess. Now people are healthy AND we signed Grant and Rolle to help out. We also have a DC, who so far, looks to be leagues and galaxies better than that fool Bill Sheridan.

I just don't like how we feel we're on a winning streak bc we won 2 games in a row.

A winning streak to me is 4 games, maaaybe 3. Not 2. I just hope this team doesn't get full of themselves, bc that's when they lose. They play so much better when no one believes in them.

Okay no offense these rankings are awful. Like NFC west awful. I understand why u have the NFC west teams ranked 12-15 cuz they suck, but why do u have the 0-5 Niners ahead of the Cardinals (who are in first), Seahawks, and Rams? And as others say what is up with the Vikings and Cowboys being in the top 5? Its like u have the rankings from the beginning of the year up here.

I think the giants are clear cut number 1 in the NFC but after that i think the next 5 or 6 teams could be put in any order.

I agree with the rankings as of right now but this season is going to be so fluid that I don't even know why anyone would want their team to be declared the best or worst in the conference in Week 6. And injuries are insane this year - health will play a HUGE role in who ascends and who descends.

I do think the Redskins are friskier sleepers than we all assume. This is a HC-QB league and somehow the Skins stumbled upon two of the best of this generation this offseason. A win against IND would be huge, but at 3-3 they'd still be in pretty good shape.

In fact, the entire NFC East is just fascinating. All four teams could realistically make it to the Super Bowl - I don't think you can say that about any other division. The division games are going to be key and I'd be willing to bet that the division title will be earned on a H2H tiebreaker. Washington has the early advantage, but there's a long way to go.

As for the Chargers and Colts, I agree with the OP that they are still just as scary as the DTrio (PIT, NYJ, BAL). The problem with these teams has never been regular season performance, so all they have to do is get into the tournament (they both will), and then take another crack at stringing together 3 or 4 winning playoff performances. The Chargers aren't going to lose every game on special teams, and having such ridiculous problems at this point in the season is probably a blessing in disguise. The defense actually hasn't been bad at all. And the offense will probably improve (McNeill shaking rust, Mathews growing, V-Jax back in W12). Scary with Rivers.

And the great X-factor in all of this is clearly Vick. The Philly D is underwhelming, but he gives you a chance to win every week. If they sneak into the playoffs, I could definitely see him leading his team to a couple of road victories (in Atlanta?). Like I said - the NFC East is just fascinating.

And the thing about the NFC East is that the wildcard team(s) could have extremely easy road playoff games to deal with. Chicago could win the division due to a soft schedule and the NFC West winner will obviously not be a good team.

I'm liking my NYG-SD preseason Super Bowl pick right now and damn, Christian Ponder is awful.

I think the best teams in the NFC are the Giants and the Bears with the Falcons close behind. It's so cloudy though I wouldn't be surprised to see any of them lose to a team like the Lions.

Pretty strange saying that about the Bears. When the Packers played them, I thought the teams looked very close to equal, although it was really hard to tell with the penalties and 3 missed kicks. With all the injuries we've dropped down to middle, middle/high tier though.

The division was supposed to be the Packers and the Vikings, and everyone was keeping an eye on Detroit wondering when the talent they've been stockpiling is going to click on all cylinders, and the Bears were supposed to just go away...

This is a qb driven league, and the NFC East comprises of:

Eli Manning
Tony Romo
Michael Vick
Donovann McNabb

Easily the best qb division in the league. It's no coincidence why the East has been the best division in football for some time. And even now, when the East looks weaker than its ever been, we still have a good chance of putting 2 teams in the playoffs.

Looking ahead some, the AFC playoff race is going to get interesting. Each division looks to be a 2 horse race, assuming SD hits their mid-late season stride, with the south being more jumbled. That's 8-9 teams trying to get in 6 spots.

I have Pitt & Balt penciled in (I think both will get to 12+ wins this year), which leaves one wild-card spot for the loser of the other 3 division races. I wouldn't be surprised to see an AFC playoff regular like NE, Ind, or SD win 10-11 games and be left out.

Probably, but the NFCN is close

I tried comparing them QB to counterpart (didn't seem fair) then I tried ranking them (really, really hard based on 5 games, less for some) so I'll just say this:

IMO Rodgers is the best
Romo is probably next
Eli-Cutler-Vick are all pretty equal, Eli is consistently good, Cutler looks like the best passer of the 3 right now but we'll see how it goes with Martz, Vick is playing the best right now but he only played a couple games and hasn't seen a proper gameplan yet
McNabb and Favre are at the bottom, both old but still decent, McNabb has horrible accuracy and Favre is throwing more INTs than TDs, both have 56.5% completion (yes, equal)
I have no idea where to put Stafford, so I'll just say I've liked what I've seen from his rookie year quite a bit

Also, the Vikings defense hasn't been as good as years past, particularly against the run, where they've fallen to 14th. I don't think they're going to be able to ride it quite the same way as they could a few years ago.

I don't think we're going to do anything this year, but it sure as hell isn't because of the defense. Our offense has put them in awful situations all year with field position and they've done a great job. The run defense hasn't been as good but our pass defense is 6th in the league and we're 5th in the league in total defense.

Brett Favre is what will hold this team back and nothing else (except maybe the offensive line). It's pretty pathetic how bad he's been with the success of the running game so far.

Just based on top 5s, I can't see any argument for the Vikings and Cowboys being top 5 with the Saints out of the top 5. Everything you can say that gives the Boys and Vikes hope is true for the Saints. Plus, the Saints have a winning record that could be unblemished if not for their kickers being godawful. For the top 5, I'd say:

Giants
Falcons
Saints
Bears
Packers

God, that conference is mediocre as hell this year.

For AFC, I like the top 5 for the most part. Only change I'd make is moving Baltimore to third. But Flacco is so hot and cold this year you never know. I don't have a problem with having the Ravens behind two teams they beat, and here's why. They beat the Steelers by 3, but they were the Charlie Batch led Steelers. Big Ben is the best QB in that division by a mile and with him back, if the Steelers stay healthy, they're my pick to win the Super Bowl. With the Jets, they looked awful against the Ravens. Sanchez especially. But the awful he looked wasn't "I'm going up against a great defense" awful, it was "I have no idea how to play the quarterback position effectively" awful. He has looked much, much better since then. Plus, with Revis out, the rest of that secondary has managed to mature fast. I was skeptical before the year, and especially after that Ravens game, but this Jets team is for real.

Funny how Washington beats Dallas and GB and is ranked behind them according to you. Dallas and Minnesota with 1 win for both and they are the toast of the NFC?

Washington only beat Dallas because of some flukey plays and mistakes by the Cowboys. Dallas dominated that game in reality.

Same goes for the GB game. Washington probably has the worst defense in the NFC East and their offense is only above-average. Teams with poor defense do not make it far into the playoffs, if they make it into the playoffs at all. That's why I have the Patriots ranked low despite their elite offense.

The thing that you people have to realize when reading my rankings is that I've studied the NFL for years and have found that defense tends to prevail in the playoffs. I rank the teams with defense in mind first and foremost. Thus teams like the Saints and the Patriots with mediocre defenses but above-average offenses will be ranked lower than teams with average offenses and above-average defenses such as the Bears or the Jets.

The problem with this is that these are two teams who have to be at home in the playoffs to have a realistic shot at stringing together postseason victories. Can you really see them going on the road in January and upsetting Pittsburgh, New York, Baltimore, or even New England? Seeding will be huge in the AFC playoffs this year.

Right now Chad, T.O., and Bob Bratkowski have held the team back more than Palmer. By no means has Carson been sharp, but the team could easily be 4-1 if those two receivers could hold on to the ball & avoid costly penalties/drops at the worst possible moments. Their play-calling has been pretty awful for the past three seasons.

Palmer played great against Cleveland, a big loss for the Bengals.
