Troy Smith is simply not a starting caliber QB in the NFL. He is short, has spotty accuracy and misses a lot of reads. With that said I think he can be a very good backup and a guy you wouldn't panic about if your starting QB is knocked out and he has to go in, but IMO the 9ers need to strongly consider taking a QB this year. I'd take Luck, Mallett, Newton, and Locker for sure over Smith.

His velocity on passes just sort of dies after fifteen yards too. Good zip on short stuff, but yeah, combine that with the other issues and he's not a starter. Might be too good to be a backup, but he's not a starter.

So Alex Smith is the starter again...

Was Troy Smith that bad? Or is Singletary just an even bigger idiot than I thought?

The Packers just have a habit of sending franchises that play them into complete disarray.

Troy Smith was pretty bad, but Alex Smith bad is a whole different level (I kid, they both suck equally.)

The real question is.. how does Singletary still have a job after the coach-killer Packers dominated his team except for a missed tackle on a TE? It's ridiculous. You lose to the Packers and don't have a winning record, you lose your job. Period. Look how well it's worked for the Cowboys and Vikings, why go against the flow?

Back to the question at hand, Troy Smith is turrble. He has awful accuracy, awful(/no) ability to read coverage, and his balls come out like lame ducks. His ability to run and occasionally watch his TE and very rarely WRs make outstanding catches are his only pros.

Niners fire Singletary mid-season, name an interim HC eg Manusky/Solari. That means in 2011, they have to stick with Manusky/Solari and cannot bring in an outside HC eg Harbaugh. If they do bring in someone from the outside like Harbaugh, I doubt any interim HC would want to stick around.

49ers fans need to wake up. You should be screaming for your team to aggressively pursue the best QB they can get. The 49ers have won 5 Super Bowls. Look at one thing all 5 of the Super Bowls had in common for the 49ers: franchise QBs. Settling for a QB like Troy Smith will just mean more years of losing in San Fran.

I try to be calm and calculative. It has come to this again unless Alex comes back guns blazing and doesn't even resemble the guy he has been for most of his 50 starts.

Unless a Adrian Peterson like slipping to #7 we will have to take the best of any QB available as long as they have a round 1 grade.

Terrible move. He's had five years, and there's a reason he lost his job in the first place.

David Carr gives them the best chance to win, straight - I know he basically cost them the Carolina game but give him a full week of prep.....Alex Smith is a clown.....

...the seasons over now. You're not a playoff team. With Smith, Smith, Carr or whoever else they can dig up to play QB. Its time to start planning for next year. You've gotta get a QB for these weapons like Davis and Crabtree.

They've still got an outside chance....but not with Alex Smith at QB.

There are a bunch of good prospects they can nab in round 2-4 territory like Enderle, Stanzi and Devlin. Locker could fall to the second round too.

You seriously think they should go with a 2nd round QB? Should they ever replace Steve Young?

They're not going to be in a position to take Luck, and I don't believe there's another quarterback prospect you take in the top ten.

Eh, once there's a rookie wage scale, a quarterback bust won't hurt a team so bad. If that's the case, you have to roll the dice with Mallett or Newton.

I don't think anyone wants to settle for Troy, he's regressed and just got benched. This is the roster our FO put together, can't do much about it now.

Personally, i hope they overhaul the FO and make it a priority to upgrade the position during the offseason, whether its Luck, Mallett, Locker, Newton, Kolb, or whoever else they like. But thats the offseason. We have to ride it out with our depth chart for 4 more weeks.

Everyone needs to quit saying this right now, AND I MEAN NOW. We have two teams back to respectability. Its not ours and the Seahawks fans and teams that the Niners are such an abysmal disappointment. They were supposed to win this division in a walk. Seattle had a new coach, St. Louis had a rookie QB, and Arizona needed to find a way to replace Warner. It was supposed to be their year. But they have disappointed. I am not gonna apologize to any1. Not to teams or their fans whose teams have better records and don't make it. I don't care about them, they can all go suffocate themselves as they cry into their pillow. And I hate to cheer for the Seahawks or Niners, but if its them over us, I will be sad, but I want them to beat the **** out of the Saints or whoever they play so badly. Go NFC West, **** the pundits, and **** them hard!

Terrible move. He's had five years, and there's a reason he lost his job in the first place.

David Carr gives them the best chance to win, straight - I know he basically cost them the Carolina game but give him a full week of prep.....Alex Smith is a clown.....
I hate to be rude but you have no idea what you are talking about. Alex Smith has only had 47 starts, less than 3 years, and a lot more of those came in his rookie year in a situation where he had no chance of success or when he was injured. If you take out his rookie year and the games when he played with a separated shoulder he has 44 TD/38 INT, a 60% completion percentage, and a passer rating of 78 in 36 games.

Definitely not great numbers by any means but factor in the fact that he is barely allowed to take chances and the play it safe mentality that a QB just has to manage the game has been drilled into his head since he was drafted and you can't expect much more.

And the reason that he lost his job is because Singletary was trying to save his own ass by scapegoating Alex Smith as the problem with the offense, just like he did earlier with Jimmy Raye and like he is now doing with Troy Smith. But, even with all of the changes, the offense looks basically the same as it has all year (maybe even worse). You know what the constant was during all of it? Singletary handcuffing the OC and QB.

As much as fans like a knee jerk reaction (OMG, HE SUXORZ, SHOULD'VE DRAFTED ___________), I highly doubt a NFL front office will cut a guy simply because he doesn't perform in his 1st year. It's the waiting, development, and realizing that the player is a bust that hurts a franchise since it takes at least 3 seasons. Drafting in the 1st won't be as much about monetary value if there is a wage scale, but the value to a franchise.

Look at the NHL. Players are drafted and given around 5 years to prove themselves. The can't-miss types are usually drafted in the 1st round. There's a rookie salary cap, so it doesn't hurt money wise, but it hurts in the sense that a different, and possibly better player could have been taken with the same pick. 5 years down the road, that can really hurt a team when other players from the same draft class are making an impact.

Most of us on the here had been clamoring for tanking the season and taking Luck after losing to Carolina...Then the team played their way out of a 1st overall pick.

Huh? He's made starts in five years. The least amount of starts he's made in a season is seven (excluding 2008 when he didn't play at all).

Fact is, you guys won one game with Alex Smith starting - and that was against the Raiders where nothing was working for us offensively. Smith didn't have to do much. You're 3-2 with Troy Smith at the helm - going back to the formula earlier in the year doesn't make much sense.

Dude. Troy Smith is completing 38.9% on 3rd down.

38.9%

He is Sabotaging whatever offensive development we can get get out of this dead weight season before we change the staff again.

Alex Smith lets us at least limp to the finish line.

It isn't his fault!
