Default Chiefs extend RB Jamaal Charles

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have signed RB Jamaal Charles to a five-year, $32.5 million contract with $13 million guaranteed.

Good move. Sets a baseline for CJ too.

Love this move. Really great timing to do a deal like this for the Chiefs. Five years of control for one of the best backs in the league is never a bad thing, money looks like good value too.

Great move by the Chiefs and seems like just the right amount of money for a running back of his caliber.

it's a nice contract for both sides... 6 million a season is about right.

This is a really good deal for the Chiefs. Charles is only 23 and the value of the deal is in line with what other RBs have received lately.

MJD in '09 signed 5 year, $31 million (17m gtd). S. Jackson in '08 signed 6 year, $44 million (20m gtd) Ryan Grant (4yr, $20 mill8) in '08), Frank Gore (4 yr, $28 mill in '07).

Now the priority has to be locking up Hali long-term.

If you're a RB, it's definitely better not to be draft in the first round if you hope to land a big 2nd contract, and this goes to proving it.

I don't think KC will be disappointed. Now, they just need to feed him the ball a little more....

Reason #2095720347587 why smart teams should never spend a first round pick on a running back.

The top 3 RBs this year are an undrafted free agent (Arian Foster), a seventh-round pick (Peyton Hillis), and a third round pick (Jamaal Charles).

Unless it's someone absolutely special, like Peterson. If a team commits to making him the central focus of the offense with his new found ability to hang onto the football, there isn't a record that would be out of his reach.

Ahmad Bradshaw who is having a great year as well was also a 7th round pick.

Also, the two best runningbacks from this draft class so far are Blount and Ivory, both of whom were undrafted. Blount didn't even make it out of Titans training camp.

To be fair, though, Blount probably would have been drafted in the low first/early second if it weren't for character concerns.

Even if it's someone absolutely special it isn't worth it. Sure, Peterson is nice, but you can realistically get comparable talent, or maybe 85% of that talent, in later rounds and free agency, and focus on more important positions such as DL, CB, WR, etc in the first round.

I wouldn't ever spend a first round pick on a back, even a guy like Peterson. The Vikings, for instance, could have picked Ahmad Bradshaw in the later rounds instead of Peterson in the first round of that 2007 draft, received about 85% of the production of Peterson, and instead spent their first round pick on a shutdown corner such as Darelle Revis or Leon Hall and would have had a superior defense, which is far more valuable than any RB.

I hate to stray off-topic here, but you're crazy if you think character concerns are the only thing that kept Blount from going in the first/second round.

Why not?

If you could get 85% of the production from a comparable late-round back like an Ahmad Bradshaw, and instead the Vikings could have spent that pick on, say,one of the elite CBs in that draft such as Darelle Revis or Leon Hall, and would now be fielding an elite passing defense...

I think their chances of winning a Super Bowl last year, or any year for that matter, with Revis/Hall+Bradshaw instead of Peterson would be greatly improved.

Yup, pushing 250 lbs and running a 4.7 while not having the best agility and quickness does not get you in the top two rounds of the NFL draft, especially at the RB position.

4.7 40 at 250lbs is actually not that bad. That's like the equivalent of a 4.4 40 for a 205lb guy.

And if you watched him at Oregon, or even at the Senior Bowl, you'd realize that he was actually very nimble and quick for a man of his size.

I think their chances of winning a Super Bowl last year, or any year for that matter, with Revis/Hall+Bradshaw instead of Peterson would be greatly improved.

Bradshaw is more like 60% of Peterson, and I like Bradshaw. AD would run apeshit behind the Giants run blocking.
