But they don't.

Oh, hey Cam. What's up?

You're right. We won't, because rooting for a rival is the dumbest ************* thing I've ever seen.

False. "Yankmees" (it's cool, man. The war's over. You lost.) don't oversign kids. They don't take a kid who got kicked out for three counts of academic fraud and stealing a laptop, make him go to a JUCO for a year, and then sign him. They don't have special ed kids playing football. You have to, you know, go to class in the Big 10. The two most recent teams to win the BCS title? Alabama and Auburn. The two teams that made the biggest mockery of oversigning? Take a wild shot in the dark here.

I defend Ohio State about as often as I root for the SEC, but...

http://oversigning.com/testing/index...n-oversigning/

On average, the SEC takes about 25 more players in a four-year stretch than the Big 10 does and cuts other players. Yeah, that's not "professional football". Most of your beloved speds in the SEC wouldn't sniff the inside of a Big 10 classroom.

So sorry, Kentucky. You don't get a part of LSU's national title. Alabama gets no part of Auburn's national title and vice-versa. I'd rather gouge my eye out with a rusty knife than watch Ohio State win the national title, but hey, that's just me. I'm also not related to everyone in the North, so maybe that's why I don't try to call dibs on someone else's national title.

Basically, you took everything I said to an extreme in order to prop up the B1G and take a shot at the SEC... be my guest.

Similar to how you may feel about a conference "claiming" a national title as their own, what's even more annoying is listening to some high strung Yankmee "claiming" a victory in a war that took place a century and a half ago, or saying "I" lost...

"I" didn't lose a ****ing thing in the Civil War, and YOU damn sure didn't win anything... who the **** did YOU kill? YOU would certainly find yourself having a very bad day running that yap IN THE FACE of many folks that are proud of their southern heritage... problem is, it's hard to ever run across any Yankmee twerps willing to go there with that garbage when it's not from behind the security of 21st century technology. I've certainly never been privy to the opportunity, although I'd LOVE to be.

There's YOU some "ammunition". (LOL)

Anyway, I never said "I" rooted for my rival to win a national championship, it's not even about the fans. It's about the PLAYERS in the SEC that feel this way about the conference, and that's all that matters. It's the PLAYERS that started the "SEC!" "SEC!" chants years ago when the SEC was the first conference to employ a conference championship game.

It's the PLAYERS, COACHES, UNIVERSITIES, and PLAYER'S FAMILIES that make the conference a brotherhood, and that's all that matters. It's doesn't matter what YOU or anyone else "thinks" about it. It doesn't change what it is.

It's not about rooting for your rival, it's about going out and representing a conference that the rest of the country may not understand. But who gives a **** if the rest of the country "gets it"? The SEC surely doesn't, I can guarantee you that. It is what it is.

Alabama fans didn't care if Auburn won or not, Alabama only has to worry about Auburn being championship relevant once every 50 years or so ;-).

But every team in the SEC was most certainly more interested in seeing Auburn win than Oregon, because it brings pride to the conference.

Charter members of the SEC are like brothers... it's the heritage and it's always been that way since the inception of the conference. The Arkansas and South Carolinas don't really count.

Alabama fans couldn't care less about Auburn's title, so could Georgia fans for that matter. Auburn is simply the little brother in the state of Alabama, always has been and always will be. Auburn knows who big brother is.

It's about taking pride in your conference brethren vs. outsiders. It's like a family, brothers don't mind kicking each others a$$, but they don't want anybody else doing it.

Signing more players isn't why Mississippi State destroyed Michigan. It's not why Alabama destroyed Michigan St. It's not why Ohio St. got blown out twice to LSU and Florida in national title games. It's not why Oregon lost to Auburn last night. It's not why Ohio St. is 1-9 vs. the SEC in bowl games....

..and it's not why Woody Hayes was Bear Bryant's b*tch.

Ha, good one. How old are you? Six?

I'm not sure where I claimed a victory. I simply said the South lost.

Again, I'm not sure where I said I won anything. Could you point me in the general direction?

So saying that the South lost the Civil War would cause me to have a "very bad day"? Not much to do in the South, is therew?

Care to put this sentence in an understandable form of the English language?

Well, it basically is rooting for your rival.

Alabama fans didn't care if Auburn won or not.
Well, the SEC chants beg to differ.

Who gives a flying ****? You don't root for your rival. Ever. Period.

So signing a ton more players, cutting the roster bottom-feeders, taking a ton of JUCO kids, taking a ton of kids who can't read, paying players and placing kids in Underwater Basket Weaving 101 doesn't help? Okay. Sure.

I'm not sure why you thought this was a valid insult to a Michigan fan, but okay?

He is a true Sophomore and a 2009 recruit but the loophole in the rule counts your graduating class the "year you enter highschool." Lewis was held back a year so his class "entering highschool" is 3 years removed.

I don't remember this coming into play for any other prospects but I can 100% guarantee it's true...

Quote:
A player's eligibility clock officially begins when he enters ninth grade because the rule is with regards to when his high school class graduates, not when he graduates.

Lewis was held back a year and thus was in high school for four years before going to prep school to finish his degree. That means even though he technically graduated in 2009 and is a true sophomore -- his high school class graduated in 2008 so for purposes of determining his eligibility, he is treated like a third year player, not a second-year player.

The rule officially reads -- "No player shall be permitted to apply for special eligibility for selection in the Draft, or otherwise be eligible for the Draft, until three NFL regular seasons have begun and ended following either his graduation from high school or graduation of the class with which he entered high school, whichever is earlier."

So again, Lewis was held back a year in high school and that means his clock is a year ahead of what you would think it would be.

Three Pitt players opt for draft
Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Three Pitt football players -- tailback Dion Lewis, receiver Jon Baldwin and fullback Henry Hynoski -- confirmed Monday that they are declaring for the NFL draft and will forgo their remaining college eligibility.

Lewis, a sophomore, rushed for 2,860 yards in just two seasons at Pitt, eclipsing former standout LeSean McCoy's school record for rushing yards as a freshman and sophomore.

"I believe my time here at the University of Pittsburgh under coach [Dave] Wannstedt's tutelage has prepared me extremely well for the demands awaiting me at the next level."

Baldwin, a junior and a two-time first-team All-Big East performer, finished the season with 53 catches for 822 yards and five touchdowns. His career receiving yardage total of 2,337 ranks sixth all time at Pitt, while his 128 receptions total ranks eighth.

Hynoski, also a junior, was Pitt's fullback the past two years. He rushed 12 times this season for 33 yards and caught 25 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown.

"After a long discussion with my close family members I feel that the current time is my best opportunity to fulfill my life-long dream of entering the NFL draft," Hynoski said, noting that he will earn his degree in business marketing in April.

Jeez, the Civil War question (no caps because I was on a phone diab) wasn't supposed to generate a bunch of long ranting posts.

Thank you all for writing many angry pages explaining just how much it doesn't bother you.

Most of the rest of sport fandom simply thinks it's coo-coo to root for rival teams.

This opinion piece in deadspin sums it up. I agree 100% with the bolded sentence.

The Rest of the SEC needs to quit rooting for Auburn.

Quote:
There's a nasty characteristic, endemic to but not solely the province of the SEC, in which fans of rival schools put that all aside to pull for their conference in big games. This is unacceptable.

We hate to pick on the SEC; but then, no we don't. The same fans of schools across the South who threw their allegiance behind the Crimson Tide last year will now be pulling, in large part, for the Tigers to win the national championship tonight.

It's that famed SEC Pride at work (Here's SECPride.com, for all your SEC Pride needs). The irrational need for your conference to be recognized as the best in the nation, the evidence being bowl wins. Even if it means cheering on a hated rival. From the Birmingham News:

"You should cheer for the SEC and the state's team."
"It makes the SEC look stronger than everybody else."
"You should be rooting for the SEC no matter who is there, because with the Big Ten getting a championship game and the Pac-10 getting a championship game, the national media would just love to say the SEC's not the best."

There it is, that irrational persecution complex that everyone is out to get the conference. No, everyone takes shots at the conference because they tend to do things like this: claiming their rivalries are the most venomous and spirited, and then turning around and rooting for their foils, all in the name of preserving the nebulous myth of "SEC Speed."

No one else does this. Red Sox fans don't pull for the Yankees in the World Series. Whichever team loses Steelers/Ravens on Saturday won't be cheering on the winner to represent the AFC North. That's because the first rule of sports fandom is if you can't root for your team, the next best thing is to root against your enemies.

Do college football fans not get this? Not that we presume Bill Plaschke speaks for anyone, but he's not the only person on the West Coast hoping that an Oregon win would mean respect for the Pac-10. It doesn't work that way. If Auburn wins tonight, it doesn't make the SEC better than the Pac-10, or any other conference. Same for Oregon. All it means is the winning team was better than the losing team, and every other team in the country (not including TCU).

All Bama and Oregon State fans rooting for their rivals tonight should be publicly shamed and forced to wear their rivals' gear to next year's Iron Bowl and Civil War.

I must have missed when quarterback became the only position on the field.

That's a rather strong message. What was it for? Stating the egregious lie that the North won the Civil War? I also don't get what he's going for. Looks like he's missing a word or six.

Ndamukong Suh's senior season at Nebraska (the one dates allllllll the way back to....last year) trumps Newton's, and I'm sure you can find a half-dozen others that you could make a strong case for.

It has to be 1988 Barry Sanders. 2,628 rushing yards, 3,248 total yards, 39 TD's. End of story.

Ya....that is the one season that stuck out as main competition. Just depends how much weight you put on Cam winning the NC and making all those ridiculous comebacks.

Yes, it was for the Civil War question.

It's probably been long enough that they should get over it.

Vince Young had one hell of a season. Granted he also had a much better defense around him than Cam did.

Have to agree with the Suh comment.

Also, Cam wasn't even the best player last night. Fairley won that game.

Had Cam not blown many passes, that game would have been a blowout.

He's very good, but not the GOAT or even of this decade. Perfect combo of offensive coordinator and QB skillset.

Not denigrating him, because he is very good, just has never struck me as one of the greatest.

I think they're waiting for the 150th anniversary in 2015.

Nice to see that Cecil Newton got to witness his investment bring back a national title live.

Jacobs said the decision for Cecil Newton not to attend "was mutually agreed upon. Out of the highest respect that Cecil has for Cameron, he won't be here today."

Newton had said that his father would be among the contingent traveling from Georgia for the game, but that he didn't know if Cecil Newton would be attending the game. He said the Newton group would be "loud and proud."

Cecil Newton was at the game last night. Despite the Auburn AD saying Cecil wasn't coming and that it was a mutual agreement for him not to attend any Auburn athletic functions.

LOLZ

Crap, just saw Sniper beat me to the punch.

if anyone ever tries to make that argument that the Iron Bowl is in the same league as The Game, just point out how many Alabama fans said they were rooting for Auburn last night - case closed. I would never ever ever ever in a trillion years root for Michigan to win a national title of any kind, and I have yet to meet a Buckeye fan who disagrees.

I would rather dip my balls in a vat of acid than watch Ohio State win the national championship. **** Miami for not being able to get the ******* job done right. God bless Florida and LSU.

I guess I just don't understand the brotherhood.
