Without a running back and DT in this class I can't give it an A. Don't get me wrong though, I am more than excited about this years class of Trojans. :)

This is a great piece on Meyer's recruiting for OSU.

Meyer

With Meyer's winning style on the field and off, combined with the giant machine of OSU football, I think the perfect storm is hitting the B1G.

I also love that Bielema and Dantonio are butthurt about kids flipping.

Tracy Howard moved the class up to an A for me. Did a great job filling needs at QB, WR, DL and CB and completely locked down South Florida (and did great in Tampa too). Got four special players in Duke, Tracy, Ereck Flowers and Raphael Kirby. Only significant mistake was messing up with Amari Cooper. All this with the Shapiro **** going on. Can't imagine what Al would have done without that. O_O

I'd give UMD a solid B maybe B+ for this recruiting class, which is actually way better than I'd expect after such a terrible season, thank you Mike Locksley!

Biggest signing- RB's Wes Brown and Albert Reid or OL Mike Madaras. Was very important for us to start locking down local talent, despite missing out on most the big dogs (Goldman, Darby etc) we still landed three local studs that should make an impact right away.

Biggest Miss- DT DJ Reader, with our move to 3-4, Reader would of been a great get, oh well.

Sleeper- LB Abner Logan, fairly under-recruited but the dudes going to be a beast!

This would all bump up to a A or A- if we got Stefon Diggs of course.

This narrative is already worn.

"Oh wow, Meyer was able to convince a bunch of guys to jump ship from a pro-child rape school to attend what was already the biggest program in the Midwest! What a recruiting superstar!"

Other than pulling kids from Rape U., Meyer's other major accomplishment was convincing kids from the state of Ohio to drop Wisconsin and Michigan State to go to Ohio State. Is there any coach in the country other than cro-magnon Luke Fickell who couldn't do that? Those kids probably grew up in Ohio State pajamas and only in that bizarre period of infraction panic ever considered not attending there.

Meyer has proven the ability to convince top prospects to attend what are already top programs. That makes him an appealing head coach to any football program, but it hardly makes him a magician. If you can't recruit at Ohio State/Florida/Miami/Florida State/Texas/Oklahoma/Michigan/Notre Dame/Alabama/LSU/Georgia and USC, you just ******* suck.

whatever, he pulled in 11 four and five star, national top 100 quality recruits that were wanted by everyone in a period of two months. It's hard to recruit a big time kid that everyone wants when they have built a relationship for a year with another school as opposed to two weeks with him. This doesn't even include DaVonte Neal who tried to sign but was refused, and Stefon Diggs who looks like a strong possibility to sign in the next 7 days.

Penn State's scandal helped quite a bit but it's still very impressive nonetheless. Urban exceeded his rather lofty expectations as a recruiter here with his first class for sure.

So, just to show how incredibly accurate (and intelligent) recruiting services are, here are two scout pages:

http://iowa.scout.com/a.z?s=8&p=8&c=1&nid=5003617

http://iowa.scout.com/a.z?s=8&p=8&c=1&nid=6094094

The awesome part? It's for the same person. Anthony Gair Morgan is an Iowa commit for 2012. His paternal last name, which he has used through high school, is Morgan and under Anthony Morgan, scout rates him a 3* safety.

Anthony's maternal last name is Gair, which he will us in college, and as Anthony Gair scout rates him a 2* safety. I guess he shouldn't have changed his name...

"top 100 quality" is that a sufficiently vague expression to include far more than 100 actual players? Ohio State has 5 players in the rivals top 100, 5 is not 11. But, even if you just wanted to say 11 four and five star players, that isn't really true either, unless you're cross-checking multiple recruiting sources to find a guy who has one four star ranking from one site.

But with all that said, if you're Ohio State, you should be pulling four and five star guys. The ranking sites exist to feed off of and promote the guys the helmet schools offer. It's a mutually-reinforcing process.

Unless said school is demonstrably inferior, the players are from your own state, and many of them built long-term relations with a school that covered for child molestation. That's a bit easier. If Urban Meyer went into Alabama and pulled out an Alabama or Auburn commit, I'd be a bit more impressed. He convinced a kid from Canton to decommit from Michigan State. Wow....

These are the 11 guys he got verbals from

Noah Spence - National top 10
Brionte Dunn - 5 stars on scout, #32 nationally (was a soft verbal who reopened his recruitment)
Tommy Schutt - 5 stars on scout, top 100 on both rivals and scout
Se'Von Pittman - consensus national top 100
Taylor Decker- top 100 on scout
Joey O'Connor - was in the Rivals 100 until final update, in which he is #102
Armani Reeves- national top 100 on scout
Camren Williams - not top 100, but top 250, offers from everyone
David Perkins - same as Cam Williams, had offers from everyone
Kyle Dodson - another top 250 guy, had offers from everywhere
Jamal Marcus - rated as a 3 star b/c of grades and no combine/camps. Insiders have admitted that he should be a top 100 player. Had offers from everyone and the game film of a 5 star recruit. When I say "either top 100 or top 100 quality" I'm talking about Marcus.

That's 7 top 100 guys out of 11, and the 4 who weren't just as easily could be from their ability and offer sheets. It should be 8 out of 12 if we get Diggs, which seems likely.

This detail of my post shouldn't get blown out of proportion. The point, the gist of my post was that the guys Meyer pulled in were all blue chip guys that everyone wanted who could play and project as starters at any school in the country.

No, it's actually still not. It's 7 top 102 guys, and that's pulling from multiple lists.

so what? if you're top 100 on scout or rivals you can tell people that you are a top 100 national player.

....and Williams, Reeves, Schutt, Spence, Perkins, O'Connor, & Marcus (& Diggs) are all guys not from Ohio. Dodson, Decker, Pittman, and Dunn are Ohio guys.

So did Josh Harvey-Clemons officially fax his LOI? Can I stop getting my hopes up?

Haha alright then. On to Diggs I guess :D. Kind of a boring signing day, with the exception of Fowler, to be a Gator fan. Overall, can't complain about the class. Would have been nice to have gotten a playmaker or two, but it's never a bad thing to build through the trenches.

Matt_HayesSN Matt Hayes

Just filed: Wisky coach Bret Beilema says AD Barry Alvarez will speak to Jim Delany about Meyer's recruiting tactics. shortly @sportingnews

Matt_HayesSN Matt Hayes

Beilema: “We at the Big Ten don’t want to be like the SEC -- in any way, shape or form.” He wasn't talking about winning championships.

Matt_HayesSN Matt Hayes

Best part -- I mean, best part -- about Ohio Staters: if Meyer did this to them while he was at Florida, they'd scream like Bielema, too.

Ohio State might have to relocate to the SEC. I want Meyer to use SEC tactics, I want to see how the Ohio State fan base reacts.I don't think he did anything bad...so far.
