We already have a few developmental guys in the building in Brewer, Mosley, McCants, Capers and Goodin. The front office likes these guys potential and they are well established in our system.

I don't see too much value in adding another in the later rounds of the draft..

I could see us looking at Barrett Jones at #49, he is the kind of guy we like and his versatility would be a huge plus.

Great minds. I've been thinking about it every time I watched Rivers play this year. If Barden stays on the field in a simpler offense, Rivers will make him look like the player that the giants saw when they picked him in the third round. I hope it works for him, shame it didn't happen here, but he's still got talent and I'll wish him well. Glad we've got Cruz, Nicks and Randle.

I hope we let Hixon go, now that RR picked it up towards the end of the season. Beckum is a waste and wont be re-signed. Barden I thought would eventually but never did. Sometimes I wonder if he was a knee jerk reaction pick after Plax left. He couldn't even contribute in the red zone. That was a telling sign. You're 6'6 and still your not used, lol. Can't play special teams either. So what's your worth then?

The approach to Bennett is the same way the Giants are handling the majority of their 17 remaining unrestricted free agents – making modest offers to re-sign their own players. The team has expressed an interest in bringing back safety Kenny Phillips but, according to a source, it’s not enough of an offer to prompt Phillips to sign right now and he’s headed to the open market on March 12.

Looks like KP is gone. I figured that based on comments in past years he made. So I didn't expect KP to re-sign.

He's still only 27, and 6'3", about 240 and has played in both a 4-3 and 3-4.

No, I didn't know about it. I am sure we would investigate it, but with our cap situation, I am sure would offer him a modest offer. I don't see us going all out on anyone.

As far as Beatty's contract goes, a source has provided The Star-Ledger with full year-by-year details, and it breaks down as follows:

Signing Bonus – $12.5 million
Guaranteed – $19 million
Yearly breakdown:

2013: $1 million base salary (guaranteed for injury/skill/cap), $50,000 workout bonus.
2014: $4.85 million base salary (guaranteed for injury/skill/cap), $50,000 workout bonus.
2015: $5.5 million base salary ($650,000 guaranteed for injury/skill/cap), $50,000 workout bonus.
2016: $6.625 million base salary, $50,000 workout bonus.

Note: There are a number of contract escalators written in from 2014 through 2017.

The way Beatty's contract is structured, if we were to cut him after the 2014 season (ie during the 2015 season), the cap hit for the signing bonus of the 2016 and 2017 seasons is less than his base salary. So we have options.

We have Beatty for two years, then if he continues to perfom we have him locked up for a fair price.

Jenkins is coming in for a visit on friday

Former Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins will visit with the New York Giants on Friday. The news was reported in a variety of places on Thursday afternoon -- with Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger apparently being first to have it.

Jenkins, 32, was recently cut by the Eagles after spending two seasons there. Jenkins started all 16 games for the Eagles in 2012, registering 26 tackles and four quarterback sacks. He spent seven seasons with the Packers before signing with Philadelphia.

Jenkins spoke this week about his time in Philadelphia.

"We didn't jell together enough. You can't just always bring in a bunch of superstars - people who think they're superstars. You gotta have players that just know their role and go along with that and just do whatever they can to help the team. We just didn't jell the way that we needed to jell to be a successful team."

Could the veteran Jenkins replace Chris Canty, released earlier this off-season by the Giants in a salary cap move?

Jenkins is a pass-rushing defensive tackle. His Pro Football Focus scores the past three seasons clearly indicate he is better against the pass than the run.

2012 -- Pass rush: +9.7, Run defense: -9.8
2011 -- Pass rush: +16.4, Run defense: -0.7
2010 -- Pass rush: +19.3, Run defense: -1.5

Very true, same might be said for Bennett.

We have to remember the nature of the salary cap is changing, we know the progressive cap improvements are going to be very gradual, we aren't going to see the jumps we had in the past, teams have to review the way they look at the bigger deals. This is just the first year, but I expect we will see more reasonable contracts in general and they will be weighted by positional value.

So there are four big name Giants free agents still not re-signed unless I'm forgetting someone. Martellus Bennett, Victor Cruz, Linval Joseph and Kenny Phillips.

In my mind, we'll never be able to keep all four of them and still re-sign Nicks next year. I think we should be happy if we manage to keep two of them, one offensive and one defensive guy.

I'd choose Cruz and Phillips, but I think we'll keep Cruz and Joseph.
