Eli for Clowney basically. Start Painter all year score another first overall pick draft Mariota/Winston. Profit for 10+ years.
I'd do it but a conditional pick would also have to be involved.

I'd draft Clowney. Then I'd hope Lewan fell to 12. Id move the 2nd up and try to get Amaro. I'd draft Murray in round 3.

Nassib, Freeman, and Murray.. One of them would work out for us.

Lock down JPP with a contract and then watch Clowney and JPP tear **** up for the next 5 years at least.

I like your thinking. There are a few other good QB options as well.

I like the idea of drafting Lewan after Clowney. Although I must admit part of my likes the idea of drafting Donald or Barr after Clowney. Jernigan is also a good option in round 2.
The idea of JPP, Donald and Clowney is downright scary. Seems like an effective counter to the passing trend in the NFL :)

Yeah but the fuse on Eli is running out. Why watch it burn out?

You have to risks to succeed. Betting on a Mariota/Winston with Clowney and Lewan/Barr/Donald/Evans would be pretty high reward.

Says who? Eli has stayed healthy throughout his career and could play another 5 years. If the OL play is truly improved and we add another weapon we'd just need to load up the D.

I say he can play another 2 max 3 at a high level. I think he'd still be serviceable by years 4 and 5, but I am not sure he'd be able to lead us to the Super Bowl. At the end of the day, is the end goal not to win as many super bowls as possible?

I agree. I think Eli has maybe 3 years left in him. We'll see how he responds this year but I think those rumors of the F.O. being Worried Eli is on decline may be true.

All that is well and good. But Eli is basically on a 2 year contract. Everyone is on a 2 year contract or less. So can play hypothetically 4-5 years but would it be on our team?

If we fail as a team the franchise could realistically fire TC and decide to let Elis contract expire. We very well could rip this whole offense and team apart.

Definitely makes more sense to unload him while we can still get something for him. I know it's not going to happen but we should definitely be exploring trading him next offseason.

If that happens then you get rid of Coughlin so the new coach can pick his QB. Also, the offense probably gets gutted too.

I'm not so sure. I like Nassib and I think one of the reasons McAdoo was hired over Sully was because of him. Nassib ran a west coast O at Syracuse, he'll be familiar with the terminology. And I think he compares favorably to Rodgers. Another year of learning behind Eli will be huge. I'm excited to see what we have developing there.

My suspicions were along these lines as well.

I really think the front office expect Nassib to be the future starter.

Well the thing about this that would be interesting to see if that he can beat out Eli . Its a clean slate for all QBs. If he can't beat Eli then show the staff he can be good. If the new HC doesn't like Nassib then that's something to see.

For me the question is not whether Nassib can beat out Eli.

The question is more about value and return on investment. Eli is 33 and has a relatively limited window of opportunity. He hasn't played well in a year and a half and has a very large salary cap number.

Can Eli, with this team, regain the kind of form that won him a pair of superbowl MVPs? Eli is very good, I just don't think he is the kind of guy who can carry a team by himself.

If there are any doubts about Eli's ability to get this offense sizzling, then it is reasonable to consider trade options and gain some return on investment which can be reinvested into the team. This would be dependent if it was considered that Nassb and Freeman can do an adequate job.

I know people talk about Coughlin hanging it up soon, but he will coach as long as he can, there is no reason to plan rosters around that possibility.

My concern is whether Eli will be able to consistently play up to the level of his contract

He carried the team in 2011. In fact, our offense showed cracks then. I stated this at the time. We were dead last in the running game and throw our way to victory.

He proved he can win without a running game and the ball has to be in his hands. I am not talking about retiring when it comes to Coughlin. It will come down to if he gets fired or not.

Everyone has 2 year deals or less from the coaching staff down to Eli and the offensive players.

We are on the clock in terms of sense of urgency.

I totally agree with you on the cracks for the last couple of years. I do think the major problem has been talent.

For the last few years we have been plugging holes and trying to get buy at certain positions rather than building for the future and ensuring we had enough quality talent developing behind our starters.

I think Jerry Reese is more on the hot seat than Coughlin
