Default 2011 NFL Opening Game: Thursday Night @ Packers

I was going to put this thread up right away after the Super Bowl but someone didn't think a poll was a good idea so I didn't, even though at PackerForum there were like 60 Packer fans who voted within a day, now I see at USA Today they have it as a question even, so I guess we're worthy here at DraftCountdown to utilize the poll function. http://content.usatoday.com/communit...-2011-season/1

Being Super Bowl champs, we get to open the season on the Thursday Night NBC game, at home.

We have 2 Marquee games to choose from.
-Chicago
-New Orleans

*The Bears game is a rematch of the NFC Championship game, and obviously a big rivalry, plus the Cutler factor. But it's more of a local rivalry in that people on the East coast, South, West don't really care, and the Bears games are usually more boring, ugly games and people have "seen it, done it" many times.

*The Saints game is a matchup of the 2 most recent Super Bowl champions, and features the best 2 QBs in the league not named Brady or Peyton.... and both teams light up the scoreboard. It could be a 34-30 type of fun game.

The last time we played them, was in 2008 in New Orleans on Monday Night Football, and it was a shootout, until late 3rd quarter when they blew us out.

I think it would be to our advantage to get the Bears this week, and save the Saints for cold December weather, but if I was NBC, I'd choose the Saints-Packers matchup here for the opening Primetime showcase.

If you were NBC, which game would you choose for the national primetime opener?

Your definitely right about better for us getting the bears first. But getting two great offenses together to mark the beginning of the 2011 season would be much better then a 10-3 boring defensive game.

That's right, the reigning 2 Super Bowl champions, settling the score who's the best.

Tampa Bay should be a good game too, perhaps an October primetime game. But they could come crashing down to earth by then. And they're not a big draw like the Saints.... I think the Bucs had troubling even selling out their home games last year.

Clearly the Saints, in my opinion. I'd rather we played the Bears but that's just not an intriguing matchup for the nation.

Has to be Packers versus Saints. The storyline will be the last two super bowl champs and whether the Packers can repeat and if the Saints will bounce back to glory. Two elite QBs. High-scoring. Win win win for the NFL.

You go Packers versus Bears and you suddenly are looking at a sloppy game between the Super Bowl chmaps and a team most of the country isn't going to think is that good; NFC Champ game or not. And before Bears fans jump on me, I'm not saying it ISN'T a good team I'm saying your casual football fans aren't going to because it's in no way a flashy team.

Bingo.
Give us Brees, let Matthews, Raji, a healthy Brad Jones or new OLB go after him.

It gets released today..... I love seeing already that the Bears play the Bucs in London! Tire them out. They're both contenders in the NFC.

I want to see us playing Chicago in this opener!
But I suspect the NBC folks will be smart enough to make it NEW ORLEANS at the PACKERS!

speak for yourself....I thought that game was really exciting - low scoring D battles are often far more interesting, Pittsburgh-Baltimore for example...

What you would rather see a repeat of Pack 10 Bears 3 then the highscoring game between GB and PIT in 09??

I like the idea of the Saints. last 2 champs starting the season out against each other. But, it'd give the Saints the opening game 2 years in a row.

The Bears would be good too. And it'd be 2 years in a row that the opening game was a repeat of the NFCCG. that's kinda cool

but, whatever. If there's football being played on Sept 8th, I'll be happy.

It should be the Panthers. The best and worst teams from last year.

I like it!
I wanted the Saints all along.
Drew Breesus: Meet Mister Matthews!
The Saints defense is as bad as the Falcons defense. Rodgers should be able to carve them up for 4 TDs and 350+ yards to open the season.

If Matthews can begin the season like last year, this will be a statement to open the title defense.

Packers 47
Saints 24
