All because of one game where he completed half of his passes and lost.

About double that.
The Houston Chronicle shows why Houston pulled the trigger:
Quote:
Before the Texans pulled the trigger, Kubiak spoke with three coaches. Gibbs, the Falcons' former offensive line coach, worked with Kubiak at Denver for years. Musgrave, who played quarterback for Kubiak at Denver, was the Falcons' quarterbacks coach last season. Groh, a longtime NFL coach, was Schaub's head coach at Virginia.
Gibbs, Musgrave and Groh praised Schaub's ability, leadership skills, intensity and competitiveness. All are convinced that, given a starting job with some talented players surrounding him, Schaub can be a consistent winner in the NFL.

Note about the contract: Only $7mm of it is guaranteed. Schaub gets a $7mm bonus right now and will make between $2mm and $4.5mm for the first 3 years of the deal. There are a few little escalators for throwing 30 TD's and taking the Texans to the playoffs. The first stage of the deal is a 3 year, $18mm deal with $7mm guaranteed. In 2010, there is a $10mm roster bonus due. If the Texans pay the roster bonus, the next stage of the contract is another 3 year deal. This one is a 3 year, $30mm deal with $10mm guaranteed. Annual salaries will be between $6mm and around $8mm through 2013. I think it's a well structured contract for the Texans.

For everyone killing this contract...its not as much as what a 1st round qb wouldve cost them. Thats first and foremost.
And to say how does he deserve that money when he hasn't proved anything...heck, we see it every year in the draft. Schaub, while unproven, is more proven than any qb coming in this years draft, has accomplished more in the NFL than any of these qbs while still very young, and is cheaper than any of the available round 1 qbs. So whats the problem?

Schaub got an annualized salary and bonus equivalent with a placeholder starting QB, with a team option to give him a solid higher salary that would be based on his performance. It is a cap savvy deal, and Schaub can easily outperform it and prove the Texans correct in a variety of ways.

Or he could, you know, suck worse than Carr and make them look like idiots.
That would prove them incorrect in a variety of ways. You gotta love speculation.

You could say the same thing about a round 1 qb though. The only thing that people can knock Houston for is how much they gave up for Schaub. That will be the key, is he worth the investment.
In terms of money, or the idea of getting a new qb, I don't think you can rip on them for that. Only what they gave up to get him.

You make a good point. I happen to like Schaub. I liked him coming out of school. I think he will do well in a WCO. Certainly, having a zone blocking system and a WR like Andre Johnson won't hurt. The Texans need to add more talent in this draft...

That was pretty much my whole point... it's all speculation. We can go with our personal opinions on the guy, but we've never really seen him, other than one game against a horribly depleted New England defense. We won't know until the end of next year.

You just said something smart. Quick, neutralize it with some random humor.

Matt Schaub will take this team to the playoffs BEFORE Carr finishes a full NFL season at 8-8 or better.

Carr was getting paid more over the next 3 seasons than Schaub will make during that time.
