There is definitely some book discussion but I think most of us try to keep it vague or only discuss what has already happened in the show. Though I haven't read books 4 or 5 yet so I think I just spoilerized myself by opening one of njx's comments. Not a huge surprise though I guess.

as far as i understand it, he's *dead*, but there's speculation he'll come back through the same contrived crap that brought cat back. i hope i'm wrong, but it would fit in with killing every other decent character.

Ive always felt Jon Snows character was far to important to kill. Yes other important characters have been killed and that was the end of them. Jon on the other hand stands for something and is an important cog to story development in the North as well as advancement to Stannis/Melissandre story as well. I wouldnt know how you could write further about the goings on in the North without Jon Snow and it be credible in any way.

no real disagreement, although i always thought mance could've been that character, but i still find it unlikely that he comes back as 'jon snow' insomuch as he comes back in some obnoxious deus ex machina twist. i don't have a tremendous amount of respect for grrm as a writer, so it could just be my bias that he knee jerk killed another important character, then had an 'oh ****' moment in editing and needed a potential out. i'd assumed that his 'origin' also would've been revealed at some point before he was offed but now i'm sort of assuming that wont ever be resolved.

PS All the Spartacus talk made me watch the first two episodes, do they keep doing that stupid slow-mo blood thing throughout the series? Like I'm cool with things paying homage to their graphic novel inspirations, but it's really ridiculous for a show, that I don't really want to be giggling through the action scenes, of.

Regarding Jon Snow, you guys are missing something kind of obvious (book spoilers)

Read the prologue of the 5th book. Thats what is going to happen to Jon Snow for sure. Beyond that, coming back in a bodily form is completely up in the air, but there is definitely a good chance that he is resurrected based on other events that have occurred in the book.

That being said, if Melisandre has the same abilities as Thoros who resurrected Berric Dondarion a half dozen times or so, and then resurrected Catelyn who had been dead for ~a week or something like that (finally leading to Dondarion's permanent death), then there is definitely a possibility of him coming back. Melisandre hasn't shown any ability to do this yet, but we know its possible. We've even seen a lesser version of a full out resurrection by Moqorro when he essentially gave Victarion a new hand close to the end of the 5th book as well. I'd definitely put money on Melisandre resurrecting Jon, though.
