The Phoenix Coyotes signed defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson to a six-year, $33 million contract on Friday.

So... How long until the Leafs are in 10th?
I have seen this show before, and honestly, not a fan of it. Lupul did have a sick game, though.

It's a good pair of players to have. Can't imagine the Ducks sustaining their current success in the coming years and they cost a quarter of their cap, but those are proven top players who have been there before, so it's not bad to build from.

sharks lose again. mclellan and dw will most likely still have jobs tomorrow and absolutely nothing will happen to improve one of the shittiest and boring teams in the league.

I feel your pain, Joe Sacco and the shadowy figures behind Greg from Accounting who allow him to still coach our team make sure of it.

It's not that bad financially. 17 million of a 60 million cap. Give a number one D-man 8 per year, and a higher end goalie 7 per year, and then get a solid second line for 18 (6 per individual player) million, you have 15 million for scraps. You'd have to assume they will have a few prospects coming up along the way that will play well for cheap, as well.
Your only issue is it makes it extremely hard to succeed if you sign someone else to a big contract and they do not perform. Or if Perry or Getzlaf regress/stop caring.

From a PR perspective, absolutely the right move to lock up Perry/Getzlaf.
From a hockey perspective, I'm not so sure. There's not a lot of talent on that team under the age of 30. They aren't really set up to capitalize on those two's best years.

How about Setoguchi mane as well? Those two have found something together. It doesn't even matter who the 3rd player on that line is lately.
Seto is a very streaky player, but I love the way he's been skating lately. He looked sluggish to start and it showed. Now, he's battling a lot more and making much smarter passes.
The balance on this team has been great to watch lately. It doesn't hurt when you have Suter/Brodin playing nearly half the game.

I'm not saying it would be impossible to build a good team with those two contracts, but the team structure that you just outlined is pretty ludicrous.

Palmieri, Fowler, Lindholm, Vatanen, Etem, and Holland is a pretty good young core of players. Throw in Rakell and Smith-Pelly and they're in a lot better shape than San Jose is at least.

"Hampus Lindholm" is still one of my favorite names out there. He'll be a good one.

At least you guys have a veteran team capable of bouncing back and contending once you get a coach. The Avs need a real coach, an EJ partner and a couple years of growing together before we can even hope to contend. :-( At least Matt Duchene has been amazing.

Eh, not really. You need 3 solid D-men, 2 lines that can score, a 3rd line that wont **** the bed when they are on, and an above average goalie to be a contender. You can easily achieve that with giving 2 guys that money.

The whole $50 million in 7 players thing would be pretty much impossible to get away with. I remember that we had discussions about Pittsburgh's possibilities of getting Parise while paying Malkin/Crosby/Letang/Neal/Fleury, and this is 10x more ridiculous than that.

I don't get a chance to go to as many Kings game in the past, but I'm glad i was in the arena to witness Toffoli's first goal, we better not trade him...

It's possible to get away with, it just leaves you less depth and no room for error.
Its not likely going to happen, either, but there is nothing wrong with investing 17 million in a top 5 center and hart trophy winning winger. Goaltending and superstars win you playoff games.

Surprised we still got a win after a most Buffalonian blowing of the lead. Must be the Jhonas.
Chicago-Anaheim should be interesting tomorrow.

Trotz isn't kidding, Nashville's roster is ******* terrible. Half of their lineup from yesterday should be in the AHL, and that's already considering that they try to get away with a surplus of system grinders. No wonder they claim everyone that goes to waivers (I'm really hoping Boychuk plays on 5+ teams this year)
None of Wilson, Hornqvist, Kostitsyn, or Gaustad are top line players, but their lineup is an absolute joke with all of those guys out right now. And yes, I know Sergei's sitting was entirely justified.
