Seriously? "We failed at winning the Stanley Cup. To remedy that, we should trade our best (and really our only only good) defenceman, who by the way is just about to win the Norris."

I'm assuming they will lock up Letang, but he is prone to **** up and was horrible in the early going of the series. Not to say he shouldn't be nominated for the Norris or be a low priority for the Pens or anything, I just don't like him.

Not like this beauty of a man, who is somehow 36 already and jeez we are all getting old.

Can't afford him and Malkin most likely, and if I had to guess I'd say Malkin stays.

Yeah you're probably looking at $6-7 million to lock up Letang. You simply cannot do that if you're going to retain Crosby and Malkin at $9 million apiece. Lots of guys are expiring the next couple of years for the Penguins. In order to keep a deep roster intact they'll have to sell another piece like they did with Staal. Letang is the obvious choice because of his propensity for **** ups.

Yes but Jordan Staal is tremendously overrated because of his brother, and should have been traded like three years earlier (or just shouldn't have been drafted at 2 overall). Letang is certainly not the reason why they lost. But yeah, they might not be able to keep them all and getting rid of him makes more sense than Malkin or Crosby.

While on the subject, Crosby is a horrible team captain.

So Sabre fans, what would you guys think of giving up Vanek, Sekera and your two first round picks for first overall? Not a rumor or anything, I'm just a bored avs fan and figure I should get in on this trade fantasizing before the draft comes and with pick in the top 2.

Why would you want to move out of the chance of drafting a local kid first overall?

Clearly he's afraid of Popeye getting a job with the Raptors and Seth demanding to play for the Leafs.

Because some team might just be totally ******** and offer something absolutely ridiculous like Rosebud's outlandish idea, which is almost bordering Lindros territory.

According to Pittsburgh sports writers Malkin is priority number 1, followed by Dupuis. I'm expecting Letang and Fleury to be unloaded, even though they swore up and down Fleury is their starting goalie going into next year.

I don't and I hope that Patrick isn't seriously considering moving down and is just posturing to get a better piece out of tallon to swap picks. But if we're gunna seriously consider moving down out of the top 2, that seemed like something that would be worth it and isn't too far off what some buffalonians have said they'd be ok with the team giving up.

Avs would become a playoff team next year with Sekera and EJ giving us a first pairing that can eat big minutes while providing excellent D, Hejda - Barrie was a very good pairing for us this past season when EJ was hurt and would be great as our second pairing next year. Then on the third pairing O'Brien and Wilson are solid handling limited minutes until Wilson gets hurt and Elliott gets called up from Lake Erie. That's a completely transformed defense from the horrific group that started last year and would give varly and the forwards the support to really flourish.

And speaking of the forwards Vanek would be great for us, he would score all of the goals next to stastny and give each of our centers a winger that's perfect for them, the clever and smooth-passing Parenteau for dynamic Duchene, the great shooting goal machine for playmaker Paul Stastny, and the Viking for future Selke-winner O'Reilly. One of those lines will end up getting to feast on lesser opposition every game.

Then there's the two picks in this strong draft to join Siemens, Elliott, Sgarbossa, Hishon?, Heard, Vincour, Aittokallio and Pickard in our not yet in the NHL pipeline. If we are gunna pass on the franchise player this trade would actually be worth it cause this lineup will go to the playoffs in year 1 and still have a ton of room to grow:

McGinn - Duchene - Parenteau
Vanek - Stastny - Jones/Sgarbossa/Vincour
Landeskog - O'Reilly - Downie
Bordeleau - Malone - Olver
Highlander/Mitchell

Sekera - EJ
Hejda - Barrie
O'Brien - Wilson

Varly
Giggy

People are pretty unfair to Sekera around here but he's still not a top pairing guy. He's not especially the type to anchor down for a top talent playing next to him, either. He's solid, for sure, but not amazing and better with a little bit of his own freedom. He's that 2nd-pairing guy that is good all around and suddenly thrives in a 4-on-4 situation. He's certainly worth what he makes and I wouldn't want him to leave, but his game is pretty similar to what I'd expect from Pysyk/Ruhwedel. At the moment, he's the easiest defenseman to trust after Ehrhoff.

Vanek is obviously a stud. Some of the best vision and hands in the game. He might not be outright unhappy, but he knows that we're basically rebuilding while he's in the last year of a big contract. Nobody wants him to leave because we just have not had talent like him in the past five years. That changes if you trade for the top pick, obviously, but Vanek can never leave because I love him too much and make him captain instead and win the next ten Cups.

I dunno, I think Sekera and EJ would be a great fit together defensively, while having the skating and puck skills to get the team up ice, even if neither one really excels in the offensive zone.

Nobody's trading you a top 5 winger in his prime, a good d-man, and 2 first round picks in quite possibly the deepest draft since 2003 for Seth Jones.

Not that it would ever happen, but do you think Brendan Smith, the rights to Valterri Filppula, a quality prospect (Sheahan, Jurco, etc.), and a first could get the number 1 pick? I like to dream about Jones in a Wings jersey.

No, I wouldn't think so. UFA rights to a non-elite player don't carry too much value.

You're right. I wonder who will give him $5 million a year this summer

Josi is a good one. Nashville now has him, Weber, Klein, and Rinne each signed for at least five more years. The downside is that they have roughly 3.5 NHL forwards.

As bad as last season was for him, Filppula is arguably the #1 forward on the free agent market this summer. He turned 29 in March, is a two-way center and had 60+ points in 2011-12.

I think the Wings stand to get more for trading his rights than you might think. (But obviously the Seth Jones suggestion is crazy talk).
