Taylor Mays was a Singletary pick. 49ers beat writer mentioned that Trent Baalke and Mike Singletary were seen arguing during the 2nd round of last year's draft. This mass email has Baalke's stamp all over it.

Doesn't bode well for Dashon Goldson now.

Reggie Smith has supposedly been the best looking DB on the field.

SS - Donte Whitner
FS - Reggie Smith

Backups - Madieu Williams, CJ Spillman, Curtis Taylor, maybe Colin Jones

Can people admit that Taylor Mays has like 0 football instincts, and is terrible at reacting? I'm talking to you Sniper.
They took Earl Thomas in the first round last year, so it's not surprising that they didn't take Mays.

And they're not just "puttting out the word" about Mays, they mass emailed every other team:

I feel like with the way the Niners have just let a lot of their FAs walk without bringing much back in, Harbaugh is trying to tank season 1 and then build from there. Gut the team of anyone who doesn't fit or something.
There's other ways to look at it in addition... Perhaps they're actually improving.

Mike Singletary - Jim Harbaugh
David Baas - Jonathan Goodwin
Aubrayo Franklin - Ray McDonald
Takeo Spikes - NaVorro Bowman
Manny Lawson - Aldon Smith
Nate Clements - Carlos Rogers
Taylor Mays - Donte Whitner
Dashon Goldson - Madieu Williams

McDonald and Bowman were already on the team, they don't count. Aldon was just drafted this year. Rogers has stone hands and is on a 1 year deal. Madiue Williams is not an upgrade over anyone.

Baas was snapped up by the Giants right out of the gate, while Goodwin sat for a while. You were also supposedly talking to Kreutz, who isn't an upgrade over anyone at this point in his career.

And Lawson wanted to return to the Niners I recall, and took a retardedly cheap deal in Cincy.

I think Harbaugh is going to gut the team of anyone not in his long term plans, and then truly start rebuilding next year.

The replacement for Franklin is Sopoaga, but it leaves a ripple effect as McDonald replaces Sopoaga at LDE.

Still, think of it this way. Franklin and Lawson had to take 1 year deals. Nobody wants Goldson. Clements had to sign a 2 year deal with the Bengals. Sure, we lost a few players, but FA is proving nobody wants them at the price they think they're worth. Only David Baas and Takeo Spikes seem to be valued by other NFL teams. We've arguably either stayed even or upgraded at pretty much every position without making significant financial investment in mediocre players.

Taylor Mays should be moved to LB and traded to Tennessee for a 6 round pick. Even if he sucks at LB, he would be a good madden player.

Chiefs finally get third-round OLB Justin Houston deal done, $2.78 million, including a $671,00 bonus, per a league source.

Since when does promoting from within "not count" as a possible decision made to improve the team? Spikes is nearing the very end and Bowman is a 1 year vet. Franklin walked which allows McDonald to start at DE which better suits the pressure-based 3-4 of Fangio than the run-stuffing 3-4 that Manusky employed.

Baas had played Center for 1 season. Goodwin has experience and Pro-Bowl caliber play.

If Aldon Smith gets more than 4 sacks this year it will be an improvement. If Lawson was that valuable, why did he sign so cheap?

Goldson had terrible lapses in coverage repeatedly during the season. Any Chiefs fans recall the flea flicker?

However, Williams would probably be a backup to Reggie Smith who was originally playing SS. He's a more natural fit at FS.

Haha, I wouldn't say Madieu is an improvement. He's just going to be a backup safety for us so he's not even replacing Dashon really. Starters will be Reggie Smith and Donte Whitner.

Dashon is good when he is on his game but he usually isn't. Last year he was just bad all year and got beat deep way too much and coupled with Nate Clements getting beat deep all the time it was just a disaster. He could be a nice little steal for some team but at the same time, he's just as likely to be out of the league in two years as he is to be a solid starter.

It took them long enough to get going, but I like the signings so far. The team really needed a change and they are getting it. I really don't think we've been downgraded too much at all. I guess maybe Soap won't be as good as run stuffing as Franklin but the pass rush should improve. It's hard to tell with Aldon but he and Antwan Applewhite should be a better pass rush than Manny immediately at the very least. Bowman is probably a downgrade from TKO but he really can't have too much left in the tank anyway. Singletary replacing Nolan was just more of the same and now finally at least Harbaugh and Baalke look like they have a plan. Guys like Lawson (inept at pass rush) really don't fit the new schemes so I'm not too worried to see them go. I'm surprised more interest wasn't shown in Lawson, Franklin, etc. but I guess it just goes to show how overrated some of these guys are in a lot of our fan's minds.

Really everything on defense has been shifted from run stuffing (Franklin, Lawson, Clements) to pass rush/coverage (Rogers, Aldon Smith, McDonald).

His agent reportedly didn't want him signing until the new league year officially started.. I have no idea why but that explains that.. maybe.
