I'm sorry I'm not arguing over facts. Right now in the 43 defense there are not 5 players better than him at the end position.

I'm not bitter. Did I want Johnson? Yes. Do I think he's very good? Absolutely.
But this isn't baseball. Football isn't about "quantifiable numbers". Everything on PFF is entirely subjective.

The Bucs are close to 60 million under the cap. I know the Glazers are not happy with having to reach the floor of the cap because in a year or 2 they want to use most of that cash to lock up their younger players such as Freeman, Williams, Benn, and so on. But, they have the money and Dominik and Morris made it clear they want to surround Josh Freeman with talent and protection. They got him weapons last year, get him another dominate Tackle and resgin Joseph.

If the Bucs can steal Free and then resign Davin Joseph, they have just formed a dominate O-line with Penn, Larsen, Faine, Joseph and Free(left to right) to protect Freeman and plow the way for the running game.
|
Free was going to be our LT going into this season, with Smith starting at RT.
And they could surely pay him more than Penn, given this market and their funds. They have the money to do so. And Free is looking at a larger contract than Penn's. $7 million a year? I wish. Free's going to command anywhere from $10 million up, probably.

There is something to be said about team loyalty. Realistically...Dallas can match any lucrative offer the Bucs make. It's just up to Dallas if they would like to do so. Considering we have so many other holes to fill.
But losing Free would be a season killer for Dallas.

I cant stand teams that so desperatley want their young QB to succeed. But all they do is surround them with oridinary possession receivers. And continue to pass on apparent elite WR talent year after year. It's an annoyance.
|
McDaniels proved in Denver that WRs dont really matter that much in his offense. did anyone believe that Brandon Lloyd and Jabar Gaffney would be that good as starters. McDaniels offense gets receivers really wide open down field, however, njx is also right, as the running game and screen pass section of McDaniels playbook is ******* hopeless.

Start Taylor Mays and Reggie Smith. Save the money from Goldson and Spikes leaving and sign Nnamdi.
Win.

So tell me how they're better.
It's not sacks and it's not against the run? None of this really computes.
I'd say Jared Allen and Peppers but that's about it, he's more complete than everyone else and has better numbers than those two anyway.
I'm happy to agree to disagree, I'm not changing anyone's mind. It's cool though I'm the only one with anything to back my argument.

Weddle to Jacksonville. Even with the Jackson signing...I'm surprised they let Weddle get away. Poz and Weddle, check the Jags out.

Columbo apparently hasn't been released... lol maybe he can start?
Free could very well walk tampa had a pretty bad offensive line last year and they're ridiculously under the cap, they could quite literally give him 20 million dollars and still have a tonne of room to sign and extend anyone they see if.

Cause those guys have a track record of playing at that level for their career. As of right now Johnson until he gets on the field has had one great year.
He also wishes he was Justin Tuck.

AJ Smith seems to like not paying anyone. It's really odd, there's a serious lack of talent at Safety in the NFL it seems and it's not like SD is strapped for cash.

Vikes agree to trade 6th rounder in 12 and possibly 6th in 13 to Wash for Donovan McNabb. Deal contingent on McNabb agreeing to much less $$

They wouldnt give him that much. But they could certainly drive it up. Dallas should be able to make a comparitive offer, assuming the Bucs just dont bully Dallas with like a $20 million offer. lol. Which is pretty damn unlikely. But the possibility is there that he becomes too rich for Dallas.
Colombo was going to be cut...actually,he was informed of his departure this morning. But something changed. Seems pretty obvious now, that they new about this Free situation pretty early in the day, and are keeping Colombo around just in case.
Dallas certainly doesnt want to go into the season with Smith forced to play LT and the over the hill Colombo back at RT. They're going to do whatever it takes to sign Free.

OK Im not trying to make this a lifetime achievement award but Johnson has 21.5 career sacks at an average of just over 5 sacks a year, once in his career was it double digits. Compare that with Dwight Freeney who has only twice failed to hit double digit sacks in his career. Players like Freeney and Mario Williams etc are also the focal point in gameplanning against by offensive coordinators. If Johnson can replicate his performance for a few years then Ill admit he's in the same group as the guys I mentioned. If not then he just goes down as a one year wonder who played well in a contract year and then got paid.

elite vs good
I think the bottom line here is that the Panthers paid elite money for a player who is very good, but not exceptional. If Johnson continues his trajectory and can improve and maintain his productivity over the majority of the contract this is not a bad signing, but to say that he is a top 5 defensive end is a ridiculous statement.
