Its not sinking quite yet....the problem is the 2008 and 2009 drafts were horrid and they were unable to retain the only decent players they got from them (mendenhall, wallace, and lewis). They cant really afford to be patient with guys, they do legit need 1 or 2 impact players....specifically a WR, RB, and OLB. When they drafted timmons and woodley they didnt start a game, the problem now is those guys that were starting over them their rookie year are STILL starting 6 years later and 6 years older. The young guys on the team at that time were Bryant Mcfadden and Williams ***...both have started, backed up, left, and came back since then. But Ike Taylor, Keisel, Smith, Hampton, Foote, Farrior, Troy, Clark, Harrison were all established verterans back in 07...now they are just old. They did everything they could to keep that super bowl team together as long as they could, and now its caught up with them but teams go through this...the pats did a few years ago before they re-tooled their roster

Theres a lot riding on Jason Worilds being able to be an OLB that we drafted him to be in the second round.

The oline has been revamped with Gilbert, (insert LG, could be beachem could be draft pick), Pouncey, Decastro, Adams. But Redman is quite possibly the worst RB ive ever seen start for the steelers and dwyer isnt much better. Haley is getting his guys though, Bicknell is his oline coach and guys like pouncey and adams are made for a ZBS but now we need a runner. Ben was incredibly efficient last year before Tamba and Houston blew out his rib...he had like a 17:4 TD:int ratio with the 28th ranked run game working for him. I imagine Haley is going to want to get bigger at WR....Wallace played less than half effort last year and Brown and Sanders had their share of DOH moments, but haley liked the big guys like Boldin, Fitz, Bowe, TO, Baldwin ect...so i think they will likely go after a guy like patterson, hunter, allen.

As far as the core of players go...I love Heyward as an emerging DE, Cortez Allen imo will easily replace Keenen Lewis. Safety is a significant need, and troy was playing pretty great near the end of the year, hes just a huge injury liability which makes me hope for a safety in the first 3 rounds (Elam, Amerson being my favorites)

They do need to hit on their first few draft picks....but theres also a significant amount of pressure on Worlids, Sanders, Heyward, Cortez, and Curtis brown

New England signed Emmanuel Sanders to an offer sheet per Schefter. I wonder if Pitt matches now. What tender did Sanders have?

The odd thing about the offer sheet is that it's a 1 year deal. Why give up a 3rd round pick for a guy who can leave after a year? Makes no sense to me.

3rd round.

I would imagine they cant match it, or they are gonna have to bite the bullet HARD

Ill take the 3rd round, this ******* front office needs a little urgency to address the offense. Id love them to take 2 WRs in the first 3 rounds

3rd round right? I'm not sure. I would really like Sanders on this team but I don't know all the details.

They could still work out a long term extension with him.

That's what I'm thinking. A 1 year deal might even be some gamesmanship, making it tough for the Steelers to match. Aren't the Steelers within 3M of the cap w/rookies to sign? Only Colon coming off? IDK off-hand.

EDIT: Not sure what rules are in place for RFA deals, though.

Im pretty sure if sanders signs the tender the patriots offer then the steelers have 5 days to match it.

They have roughly 3 million with 5 million coming off the books in June for colon.

I know he was stupid but I thought his antics were relatively harmless, not surprised he has not amounted to anything of a football player after college but I didn't think he would go to jail. His recruiting trip stories were the stuff of legend.

It sounds like Sanders would have to play on the one year deal.

"The Patriots could still work out a long-term deal for Sanders after the 2013 season and everything worked out." - source link

Also, looks like you're right. The team has 5 days to match an offer to an RFA.

According to PFT he's signed the offer sheet already, which is why the '5 days to match' rule comes into play.

He can't sign until the Steelers make their decision to match. At that point if they do match he has to sign with Pitt. If they don't match he has to sign with NE.

Cincy Jungle has a good article on it.

EDIT: Yes, he signs NE's deal and then if Pitt matches that deal essentially overrides NE's deal.

". . . which offer the player desires to accept, he shall give to the Prior Club a completed certificate substantially in the form of Appendix B, attached hereto (the "Offer Sheet"), signed by the Restricted Free Agent and the New Club . . ." (from article linked above.)

is it weird that the extra 3rd rounder and $1.3 million in cap space excites me a lot more than sanders does? lol

Probably not. Both teams are tremendously thin at WR, though. NE has been awful at drafting WRs and need someone who is ready to play now for 2013. I'm ok with it based on that. Don't love it, don't hate it. I think the immediate impact is better than a 3rd round WR and it's likely the upside it, too. But holy **** do we have a roster full of injury concerns in the pass-catching department.

steelers could pair that 3rd rounder with their 17th pick and move up a few spots in the first to nab Patterson or possibly jordan if he falls

Wouldnt surprise me to see them take 3 WRs in the first 4 rounds with how thin they are with Brown, Cotchery and Plaxico lol

Ideally the draft goes something like this:

Trade up in 1 with NEs 3rd and take patterson

Cordarrelle Patterson
Matt Elam
Markus Wheaton/Terrence Williams
Then idk a RB like Franklin or Lattimore, Possibly Cornelius Washington or john Simon

A lot of possibilities to move around in round 1 and 2 with an extra third

I could Even see them trying to trade a late rounder for jon baldwin who was drafted by haley...Baldwin is an abysmally bad fit for an andy reid offense

Also Breaston went to Germany yto have some procedure done on his knee i believe, i think with the extra 1.3 they would sign breaston and bradshaw

Man my old HS football coach coached him and he literally warned us to never be like that guy lol.

He said that he was actually academically/mentally pretty smart... just was constantly getting into trouble. The guy could possibly be a sociopath.

At first I didn't think much of this, then it dawned on me that this would make sense for both parties. His asking price is probably very low, I think a 6th would spark their interest. He's a home town kid from Aliquippa, he's played with bad QB's and bad offenses his first 2 years, and while he may not develop into a true stud I still think he's got ability in the red zone to help and he's shown he has the talent to make some of those type of plays.

Considering Pittsburgh doesn't have much in the way of receivers it would seem like a good gamble if he does break out seeing as how he is going into his 3rd year. He can do everything that Plaxico can do at this point right now except better and you rolled the dice on his potential. Andy Reid has no place for him at all and would probably draft a QB with that pick anyway.

Haley obviously likes what he brings to the table and ben has been bitching for a tall WR every since good plaxico left in 05

baldwinning....ha

I do wish they could have snagged DHB up, he would have fit in Wallaces role just fine

It's amazing to me how KC had so much talent yet they were so awful last year. It really is puzzling.
