Default 2011 College Breakout Players

To piggy back on Scott's pick of John Brantley, I was wondering who everyone has down to break out this year and take a step to the next level.

The Pick:

Tyler Wilson, QB Arkansas (r-Jr.)

To stay on the QB side of things for breakout star, how about Tyler Wilson from Arkansas. I think he has a chance to be better than Mallett. Although he doesn't have the arm strength like Mallett, his accuracy is so much better. Wilson has a medical redshirt from '08 so he has two years of eligibility left. Should be fun to see how he progresses in that system.

The Dark Horse:

Stedman Bailey, WR West Virginia (r-So.)

Geno Smith made huge strides last year and undoubtedly will improve under new Head Coach Dana Holgerson. Bailey was moved from an inside WR to and outside WR by Holgerson back in spring practice. Really, all that means is that Holgerson wants the best WRs on the field and with Tavon Austin (who I hope everyone knows about) and Tyler Urban playing inside, the former Oklahoma State OC is confident enough in Bailey to use him on the outside as one of his top two WRs.

The Honorable Mention:

Dwight Jones, WR North Carolina (Sr.)

You could argue that he broke out last year. At 6'4 225, he has the size that stands out to scouts as he uses his size to its fullest when going heads up with defensive backs. His downfall right now are his hands but if he can improve on holding onto the ball, he could rocket into the second tier WR conversation in a draft that's deep at the position.

QB: Tyler Wilson, Arkansas
Honorable Mention: Aaron Murray, Georgia

RB: Marcus Coker, Iowa
Honorable Mention: Robbie Rouse, Fresno State

WR: Keenan Allen, Cal
WR: Justin Hunter, Tennessee
WR: Stedman Bailey, West Virginia
WR: Marvin McNutt, Iowa
Honorable Mention: Dwight Jones, North Carolina

TE: Orson Charles, Georgia
Honorable Mention: Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame

DL: Louis Nix, Notre Dame
DL: Hau'oli Jamora, Washington
DL: Jackson Jeffcoat, Texas
DL: John Simon, Ohio State
Honorable Mention: David Mackall, Maryland

LB: Michael Mauti, Penn State
LB: Kevin Pierre-Louis, Boston College
LB: Zavier Gooden, Missouri
LB: Jarvis Jones, Georgia
Honorable Mention: Mychal Kendricks, Cal

DB: Nickoe Whitley, Mississippi State
DB: Bacarri Rambo, Georgia
DB: Kyle Fuller, Virginia Tech
DB: DeMarcus Milliner, Alabama
Honorable Mention: Tyrann Mathieu, LSU

Offensive lineman is just impossible. Put down some starters from the Big 10 and you're bound to hit. They tend to be known when they declare.

Don't see why it had to be moved...but anyway these are a few players I think could breakout into elite stars and big time prospects this season.

Mike Glennon JR QB NC State- Maybe I can see Brantley improving his game, but this kid is a possible star and was the reason they got rid of an extremely successful quarterback in Russell Wilson. I think he can play and should have a great year.

Craig Roh DE JR Michigan- With an improved defensive coaching staff and being at his more natural position, I expect big things out of him this year, finally makes that step to being an elite prospect.

Xavier Rhodes CB SOPH RS Florida State- The best corner in the country, is what people will be saying after this year.

Chris Owusu Stanford- If he stays healthy, he could have a real monster year.

William Gholston DE SOPH Michigan State- He should be an absolute star and will be apart of a very powerful and strong Michigan State defensive line.

Best of the rest:
*Kevin Pierre-Louis OLB SOPH Boston College- Stud linebacker, part of a long line of productive BC backers.
*Prince Shembo DE SOPH Notre Dame- Will be an elite pass rusher when the season ends.
*Marcus Coker RB SOPH Iowa- Star running back, should not miss Robinson one bit.
*Michael Williams TE JR Alabama- Massive man, dominating blocker, potential beast at tight end.
*TJ Moe WR JR Missouri- Already a star receiver, will be an elite one after this season, has really good potential, strength and hands.
*Ronnie Wingo Jr. RB JR Arkansas- With injuries from the two other backs, it is his time to shine.

I'm going to try to get some more names in this thread before the full weekend of game is over so it can be on record.

I like the Coker mention. Another RB I like.

Robbie Rouse, RB Fresno State
(Jr.)

Would have a bigger following had he been on a team in a better conference. Not exactly the caliber of player that Mathews was at Fresno State, yet. He's small at only 5'7 but he's surprisingly strong when he hits the hole. He's shifty and quick just as any smaller back should be if they hope to have a successful career. His 40 is apparently in the low 4.4s. With another strong season, he could be a highly conveyed change of pace back when he declares.

Louis Nix III, DT Notre Dame (So.)

Had to give the defense some love. Louis Nix will be the anchor down in the trenches for the Irish this year playing along Senior Keenan Lewis-Moore (who is absolutely huge as well). Nix has been dominant in spring practice, though it means as much as preseason stats, its promising from a Sophomore. Think Vince Wilfork to a slightly lesser degree.

Ray Graham

His style of running and receiving out of the backfield in a Todd Graham offense could be absolutely scary!

He was on my radar to put down to but I refuse to support or tout anything Pittsburgh Panthers. Check the avatar.

I think I want to fill an entire team of players destine to break out. I mean some of the guys mentioned in this thread are names that most of us on this site should know by now so I'm trying to go deeper. I also might start putting lists together for some national games of who to look for from a casual fan standpoint. I feel like there's no guidance of who to scout, especially since it's the common interest amongst this board.

I have two homer PSU linebackers that could breakout:

Michael Mauti

Had a decent year last year coming off a torn ACL. With another year removed from his injury and reports saying he's bigger, faster, and stronger than last year, he could be a guy who REALLY makes an impact at PSU. Is said to be one of the next line of great PSU linebackers.

Gerald Hodges

Big, fast, agressive, mean, etc. He came into PSU as a safety and grew into a LB. He still has the frame to get even bigger and make more of an impact. His season last year was cut short due to injury, but I expect he'll break out in a huge way. Compared to Navorro Bowman by some.

Hodges is going to be a monster. I'm still pissed he didn't come to Rutgers we could really use him.

Anyway my answer is the Rutgers WR corps. Sanu, Harrison, and Coleman are all future NFL players and probably early round draft picks. They should light it up this year.

My pick for "Breakout Star" is Georgia QB Aaron Murray

In draft talk we always hear about smaller quarterbacks being the next Drew Brees, and I think we are finally seeing the guy that will be able to live up to the comparison. He had an impressive first year for a frosh, and I think we will see Murray display his skills as Georgia makes a run at a national title. Goergia has two difficult games to open up the season, Boise State and South Carolina, but both games are at home and then they avoid the likes of Alabama and LSU in conference play. I really like Georgia's chance to be a team like Auburn, where they make it to the national title out of nowhere and the catalyst of that run being a big time, impact QB.

Can I no-sell Brantley in this topic? You'd think Scott would have learned after he backed the last two Weis busts

Anyway since Glennon was already mentioned my homer pick is:

Mario Carter

Hasn't played much yet due to injuries but is very talented. When all is said and done, will be a better prospect than George Bryan imo

Also not sure you can call this a "breakout" but I imagine Shayne Skov will be a household name at the end of the season and projected top 15 pick

Those are two good picks off of Penn State, but I personally would have gone with Silas Redd.

Anyway my answer is the Rutgers WR corps. Sanu, Harrison, and Coleman are all future NFL players and probably early round draft picks. They should light it up this year.
it that true? oh, i cannnot believe it. it is unbelievable.

Anyway since Glennon was already mentioned my homer pick is:

Mario Carter

Hasn't played much yet due to injuries but is very talented. When all is said and done, will be a better prospect than George Bryan imo
I agree with you from an athletic standpoint if Carter's knee(s) check out. Two ACL surgeries are scary. I would probably go with David Amerson. That kid is gonna be a STUD.
