For a team where the head coach calls the offensive plays for instance, what does the offensive coordinator really do there? He might just be a glorified position coach with a nicer title. So teams want to prevent losing their position coaches to such situations.
From what I've gathered in my years of sitting around reading football articles when I'm supposed to be working, they: 1) run the offense-only practices. 2) run the gameplan meetings.

Of course, the head-coach-that-really-runs-that-side-of-the-ball gives them a list of what to implement in those meetings and practices.

Basically, those coordinators who don't call plays do the "biz-itch work" part of the coordinator job, the stuff the head coach doesn't want to do, in hopes of learning enough to get a better job down the road.

Understandable when teams block because of this, I think.

3. Let Peyton do his thang

Over Andy Reid, who is a known qb guru, been to the playoffs almost every year, went to a SB, 5 NFC Championship games, almost always had a competitive team, is one of the best drafters and evaluators of talent in the business, and was some McNabb vomit, a TO injury, and spygate away from having a SB ring

Good call Chargers.
I think the appeal of McCoy is his flexibility. He had three very different QBs and put a different system tailored to their skills in place for each one instead of forcing them to learn "his" system. That seems pretty rare nowadays. We're very much in an era where a lot of bad coaches try to jam square pegs into round holes and set players up for failure. Like Mike friggin' Martz. That doucher tried to make every team he ever coached do the exact same stuff his hall of famers did in St. Louis.

Look at all the HC candidates this offseason. 90% of them were offensive minded coaches. Teams are concerned that a defensive coach won't develop a franchise qb the way an offensive one would, so they rather have stability on offense.

So guys like Horton get screwed bc of it. This also screws a lot of black coaching candidates, bc most of the black candidates are defensive guys.
Couldn't have said it better. It has nothing to do with his hair. After Nolan and Sing, I know our front office CLEARLY wanted a HC who could maximize the QB position. And the way the rules favor offensive players these days, it makes sense. It takes a special defensive coach....a Belichick, a Cowher, or a Parcells who know enough about the offensive side of the ball to spot talented assistants and surround themselves with good coaching on the offensive end, to last in the modern NFL. Most won't last. Rivera will be next. Richardson will see the light soon and understand a talent like Cam needs a creative, offensive minded coach to get the most out of his abilities. Its either that or your going through OC's every few years if they're successful. Or firing them every few years because they're not.

Enjoy. Your special teams unit will be awesome.

Anyway, Mike McCarthy said he expects Dom Capers to be back in 2013. I don't know of too many coordinators who can survive two straight years with that kind of poor performance by their side of the ball and still have a job.

McCarthy doesn't like to fire people that he likes (see: Crosby, Mason) and the defensive unit did improve a lot this past year, despite injurieeeez.

I'd be calling up Rob Ryan to see if he's interested in the gig, but I'm not really a fan of "change just for the sake of change." If Capers is going to be fired, I want to see an upgrade.

I wouldn't be surprised if Capers retires and Darren Perry takes over as DC.

Word is that Fish is considering him but nothing has been finalized yet. I'm not sure he would be all that good of a fit but we'll have to wait and see.

Ray Horton would be a better DC for the Rams, IMO!!

Meh, I think the Capers hate has gotten really ridiculous. The problem is you guys never got a decent 5-Tech to replace Jenkins. Then theres Raji, who seems has regressed from their SB year. And did ppl forget they got royally screwed with Nick Collins injury? Add all that and the injuries this year and you see how hard it is as a coordinator to stay consistent. We lost J. Smith for 3 games and most Niner fans thought the world was going to end. I think McCarthy understood what Capers has been up against. Defense in today's game starts up front, in the trenches. They have to get that D-Line in order, as well as get Bishop back healthy. Heyward looks like a steal and if they can squeeze one more solid year out of Woodson as a safety, they should be fine moving forward.

Surprised Horton hasn't gotten offers from other teams for HC gigs or DC gigs. If he was in such high demand one would figure he would have already been hired by one of the teams with a vacancy.

Sometimes the simple play is the right play. Let the players make you look good. You don't have to reinvent the wheel on every play.

Giants defense sets new franchise mark for yards allowed in 2012

The Giants defense set a new franchise record in 2012 -- but not the kind of record teams like to set.

The Giants' 6,134 yards allowed this season, and 383.4 yards allowed per game, are new highs for the franchise. The Giants have only given up more than 6,000 yards twice in their history: in 2011 and 2012, under defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Last year's total was 6,022, but the Giants went on to win Super Bowl XLVI with strong defense down the stretch.

The 2012 defense finished 31st in the NFL rankings, the first time the Giants have ranked next-to-last in defense since 1966. Big plays were their Achilles heel: The 29 passes of at least 30 yards they allowed led the NFL this year.

The Giants were able to tighten up in scoring range. They finished 12th in the league in scoring defense, and only allowed touchdowns on 23 of their opponents' 50 trips to the red zone, the sixth-stingiest rate in the league. They also finished fourth in the league with 35 takeaways and a plus-14 turnover differential, both improvements from 2011.

But the big plays allowed and defensive inconsistency were a troubling trend through their 9-7 season. Coach Tom Coughlin said at his season-ending press conference that there would be no changes to his coaching staff and that Fewell was still his defensive coordinator. Coughlin said the defensive players would agree with Fewell's assessment that they did not make plays.

Other notable statistics from the 2012 season, via the Giants:

++ The Giants scored 429 points, the franchise's second-highest total, behind the 1963 Giants' 448 points. This was the fifth time in team history the Giants have topped 400 points. Four have come under Coughlin, and three with Kevin Gilbride as the offensive coordinator.

++ QB Eli Manning's career completion percentage is now 58.60, moving him into first place on the Giants’ all-time list among quarterbacks with at least 1,000 attempts.

++ RB/KR David Wilson set a new mark for Giants rookies with 1,925 all-purpose yards. That total was the most by any Giants player since Tiki Barber's 2,127 in 2006. And how about this: Tampa Bay RB Doug Martin, selected one slot before Wilson, bested him by just one yard. Martin led all NFL rookies with 1,926 total yards this season.

++ The Giants were the only team this season to have three different players with a 100-yard rushing game: Ahmad Bradshaw (four times), Andre Brown (once) and Wilson (once).

++ Victor Cruz’s 86 receptions were the second-highest total in team history. Steve Smith had 107 catches in 2009.

++ Giants punted 58 times, fewest in team history for a 16-game season, and also fewest for a non-strike season since punting 47 times in a 14-game season in 1972.

++ S Stevie Brown not only recorded the most interceptions by a Giant in 44 years, with eight. But he also had five interception returns of more than 40 yards, the highest total in the NFL since Ravens S Ed Reed's five in 2004.

++ Steve Weatherford’s gross punting average of 47.5 yards was the highest single-season average by a Giants punter with at least 35 kicks. He broke Don Chandler's previous mark of 46.6 yards, set in 1959.

++ The Giants’ 33 field goals were the fourth-highest total in franchise history. The team kicked 35 field goals in 1983, 2005 and 2008.

++ And we'll end with the weirdest franchise record: The Giants set a new mark with 37 first downs by penalty. The previous high was 36, set in 1997.

But you have to look like a genius in order to land that head coaching job.

Handing off to your star running back to run behind your stud o-line or calling super basic defenses to let your playmakers make plays isn't going to get you noticed as a genius.

Most coordinators are head coaches in waiting. The ones who turned down head coaching opportunities or just flamed out in the ones they did get are the ones to have. The Monte Kiffins, the Jim Johnsons, the Tom Moores, the DIck LeBeaus....THOSE are the coordinators to have.

He's interviewed for HC jobs. They can't hire him as a DC because he's still under contract with Arizona.
