Colts found their DC.
Quote:
Colts hired Greg Manusky as defensive coordinator.
It's more confirmation that Indianapolis is scrapping its old 4-3, Tampa 2-style defensive schemes and jumping headfirst into a 3-4. Manusky, an NFL defensive coordinator since 2007 with San Francisco and San Diego, worked in the AFC West against then-Raiders DBs coach and new Colts head coach Chuck Pagano in the mid-2000s. Manusky has taught 3-4 schemes in virtually all of his coaching stops. The Colts will overhaul their roster this offseason.

Colts hire Manusky. Good luck with that.

Manusky is one of the worst DCs I've ever seen.
All he did was run Cover 4 every single play for SD. It was pathetic.

Defensive coordinators are becoming more like offensive coordinators now in that everyone hates them. All of them.
Seriously.

If a defensive coordinator had good players the defense would play well. If a defensive coordinator has bad players the defense will play bad. It doesnt matter who's defensive coordinator, you need good players back there.
IMO offensive and defensive coordinators get way too much blame.

This hate is justified though. Trust me, he seriously was that awful.
There's only maybe 4 to 5 great DCs in the league. The rest are just meh. Or terrible.
At the end of the day, players make plays. Which is why I won't kill a coach unless he shows me complete incompetence. Like the rush 3 cover 2, or Greg's rush 4 Cover 4 literally on every snap.
Ask a Charger fan. See if I'm lying.

There was no sarcasm intended in my statement. Seriously. The majority of defensive coordinators in the league today are either too blitz happy for their own good or are far too conservative. Just like all of the terrible OCs who call plays trying to look flashy and creative in order to draw head coaching consideration somewhere else.

It's not really about being passive or aggressive. Simply put, a good DC maximizes the team's strengths and limits its weaknesses.
Not every team can play bump and run and blitz hard. Contrarily, not every team can run Tampa. It's all about personnel, and knowing how to use your personnel.
The rest is up to the players. Players have to make plays. The only DCs I have issues with are the ones who blatantly misuse their talent.

Look at the 49ers defense when Manusky left and Fangio came in. Ray McDonald, Isaac Sopoaga, Ahmad Brooks, NaVarro Bowman, and Tarrell Brown all greatly improved their play from 2010. Dashon Goldson did too but he was fighting some injuries in 2010 so who knows how much that contributed. There were some key additions like Whitner, Rogers, and Aldon Smith, but the core of the 49ers front 7 had all been there since 2010, some of them for years, and they all balled out.

There are exceptions of course. We have to add some of the credit to Jim Harbaugh here though, he just gets his players to play or him. If you're a defensive player playing for him you'll give your all on every snap. Great head coach IMO.

I dont hate Zimmer.
I hate that I can still see Marvin's fingerprints on the throat of what should be a great defense

I'm pretty underwhelmed with the Manusky hiring. Hopefully he was just in the wrong situation on the west coast...

Bucs have interviewed Steelers assistant Jerry Ovlasy to be there LBs coach. Good background and would have stepped in to be the Steelers LBs coach had Keith Butler taken the Indy job.

Haha thats not hard when your team has been playing great defense for years. But what would you be saying if you finished last in defense next year. Im sure it would be 'get LeBeau out! Whatever he had he's lost it' or something along those lines.
Not saying you in paticular, but i'd guarntee some people would be.

Defensive coaching just makes me sad. There was once a time when we had Gregg Williams, Dick LeBeau, and even Jerry Gray all on the same staff. They coached a defense consisting of Sam Adams, Pat Williams, Aaron Schobel, Takeo Spikes, London Fletcher, Antoine Winfield, Nate Clements, and Lawyer Milloy.
These days, I get George Edwards playing Spencer Johnson at OLB.
