Default Tannehill a Better Fit in Miami than Flynn

Matt Flynn is going to get a substantial financial handshake for tearing up Detroit's defense in the last game of the season. Look at some of the other recent quarterback deals: Mark Sanchez just got a three year extension for $40 million, Ryan Fitzpatrick just got a deal worth over $60 million, and Matt Cassel signed for six years and $63 million after putting together an entire season worth of quality play in New England. Flynn is going to get paid way more than he deserves at this point.

The rookie wage scale has made drafting quarterbacks later in the top ten a very reasonable proposal. Jake Locker was the eighth pick in last year's draft and got a four year deal for just over $12 million. Considering Tannehill's inarguably more appealing physical tools and the significantly more reasonable sum of money involved in acquiring him, Tannehill is the smarter addition. Keep in mind that Mike Sherman coached Tannehill in college and the risk involved in drafting him is relatively minimal. Matt Flynn may end up justifying $10 million or more per season, but why put your money where your mouth is when Tannehill can be had for $3 million a year?

Well, would you rather have a guy who busts (imagine Blaine Gabbert, Joe Harrington, Kyle Boller, Rex Grossman, Chuck Long, Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, David Carr, Jason Campbell, Matty Leinart, Jamarcus Russell, Cade McNown, just to name a few) for $4 million, or Matt Flynn for $8 million?

You throw in Detroit like they're a horrible defense, and the only bad defense in the league.
Their defense is better than a lot of defenses, Patriots included. Packers pass defense included. Vikings, Cowboys, etc. Many teams have bad pass defenses these days.

Flynn at least has shown he can take apart subpar defenses in the National Football League. You've seen it, you know it. And reminder that he did that to the Lions without Greg Jennings and Randall Cobb suited up.

The 3 WRs dressed were Jordy Nelson, James Jones, and Donnie Driver. And it was cold and blowing snow.

Now let's look at what we've seen from Ryan Tannehill.

He played in the wide-open Big 12, a la Colt McCoy, Graham Harrell, Chase Daniel, and Blaine Gabbert.
What did he show besides being tall, having a pretty strong arm, bad pocket presence, and an ability to phuck up at the end of games with bad passes or interceptions?

I've seen a lot of guys mysteriously rise up draft boards in my days, but this is one of the funniest ones ever, if he in fact does go in the top 10.

It is true thanks to the rookie wage scale, these types of busts will be easier to overcome financially.

But no team should take a guy like this over Flynn because it's less devastating if you miss, in terms of finances.

Joe Philbin has seen Flynn for 4 years and he definitely wants him to follow him to Miami. The owner wants Manning. We'll see what happens with Peyton, but then expect Flynn to head to Miami as soon as Manning makes his decision known to them.

With Flynn would be getting a player to come in and start straight away. With Tannehill you'd have to sit him for at least a year becasue of his lack of quarterback play.

It depends what the Dolphins are looking for. I'd take Flynn because he's proved he can at least play in the NFL. Not saying he's going to be a grat quarterback after two starts but he has more experience than Tannehill.

If they got Tannehill they would have to either keep Matt Moore, start Tannehill or sign a veteran like Jason Campbell or Orton to start infornt of him. The latter is probably the best option but then how much would they save? Campbell on about 6million a year and Tannehill for about 4mill. Thats about as much as Flynn would cost.

Because it's not just 3 million a year, it's 3 million a year plus the 8th overall pick.

And keep in mind Joe Philbin coached Matt Flynn in Green Bay. Both QB's are familiar with either the HC or OC.

At the end of the day, Miami has until Tuesday afternoon to decide whether they want Flynn or not. If Manning is still undecided you cannot sit around and wait on his decision if you are deeming Flynn as your fallback option or you risk losing out on him to Cleveland, Seattle or maybe another suitor. They could lose out on both and be left with plan C/D/E/F which becomes Tannehill/Weeden/Cousins or Osweiler. And that plan could still fall apart and leave you picking the leftovers....

If Cleveland lands Flynn, you have to fear Seattle jumping you for Tannehill.

If Seattle lands Flynn you have to fear Cleveland pulling the trigger at 4.

Flynn is clearly Miami second choice behind Peyton and if they don't get Manning, Flynn will be a Dolphin. Tannehill will then be drafted by Cleveland at #4, God help them.

You could make the same argument about any position they could target in free agency.

Michael Floyd should not go to Miami. I know what you're thinking from a football perspective, but giving the guy with the DUIs millions of dollars and a lot of free time in South Beach is a terrible, terrible idea.

Fans generally will prefer Flynn. He will be perceived as less of a risk because the Dolphins wouldn't be spending a first round Draft pick to get him. I personally think that's flawed logic, but that's the way many fans will see it. The Dolphins should simply be trying to find a franchise QB. Whoever they think is best to take that job should be who they go after, regardless of the risk. Teams shouldn't settle on a QB just because he costs a little less or requires less Draft investment. They should be doing what it takes to find a guy they think can be their long term answer as a franchise QB.

I do think Ryan Tannehill would be a good fit in Miami and if the Dolphins get Peyton Manning he could sit and learn from one of the best. The advantage with Matt Flynn is you go into the draft set for the future at the qb position and could take a number of potentially outstanding players at #8 (DeCastro, Kuechly, Cox, Coples). I think Flynn is essentially a Joe Theisman type, I know that's an old-school comparison but he seems to have the same skill sets.

Flynn is a Cassel's clone and hardly a true franchise QB, yes, you can win with him but don't expect Super Bowl wins.

Cleveland may now well target Tannehill, what choice do they have?

Not waste the 4th pick on a crappy QB just to get a QB? I'm think there is gonna be a draft next year too.

Yeah, but it takes 3 or 4 years before that QB is capable of leading a real contender to a SuperBowl, so if tey wait, you are talking about 2016 or 2017 before they have a real shot at a Super Bowl, that is of course, if the QB doesn't flop.

I wouldn't bet on that unless Manning makes his decision before the start of FA. Cleveland, Seattle or another team can swoop in and woo him if the Dolphins are too busy putting a full court press on Peyton.

Flynn can now sit back and wait for the 2 or 3 teams who lose out on Peyton to now come calling for him. The Miami owner doesn't seem like the type who will wait, he wants that QB now, so if he loses out on Manning, I think Flynn will be a Dolphin.

Yeah, the Dolphins and Browns should just keep waiting. Being afraid to take a risk on a QB is what wins in the NFL. Maybe if the Browns and Dolphins wait long enough, the perfect risk free QB will fall into their lap. Look around the NFL. Nobody had questions about the current franchise QBs in the league. They were all flawless prospects.

I don't think Miami is sitting back and playing it safe, that is the Cleveland game plan. Miami wants Peyton as choice #1, Flynn is choice #2 and Tannehill is choice #3.

But we don't know when Manning will make that decision. If he doesn't make it until Thursday or Friday, Flynn may have already agreed to a deal elsewhere. Do you think Flynn wants to sit around and wait out the Manning game and end up someone else's consolation prize if another team (that obviously he has mutual interest with) is ready to put ink to paper and make him a very rich man ?

No, Flynn wants a lot of money and isn't stupid. He realizes he has to wait out the Peyton circus before teams will come a knocking and he can maximize his earnings. His agent will tell him to be patient till the bidding reaches a frenzy.

tannehill in the top 10 is sanchez all over again, an inexperienced qb who went too high just b/c the team talked themselves into thinking he's a franchise qb

Tannehill in the 1st round still feels like a Troll to me, you take a guy there if you really believe he can be your franchise QB. Tannehill is an intriguing developmental guy, 3rd round at best.

The thing is, I think a lot of people are assuming that because Tannehill is strong armed and athletic, that he's a big project.

He's not like Sanchez, because he isn't surrounded by elite talent, he's more physically gifted, and he already looks like he's "getting" the whole QB thing, and not panicking in the pocket, etc.

I think what's most impressive is how fast Tannehill has picked up little things about being a QB. He's pretty advanced for how little time he's been a Q. (I'm assuming he was a QB in high school before being converted though?)

I dunno if I'd take him top 10, but I wouldn't have taken Sanchez in the first round, he always looked lost when pressure came, and if his elite talent wasn't dominating, he was mediocre.

If I were Cleveland and he were there at 22, I'd probably take him, and think about trading into the 15 range to snag him.

Agree on your premise that that is way too high for Tannehill but dont see him as a crappy QB. Holmgren's MO is to not draft inexperienced QBs out of college and i dont see him doing that in this case with Griffin seemingly off the board.

I would be in the camp that says wait on a QB this year and build your offense up rather than take a guy with a pretty short resume. Cleveland could even trade down with someone like a New England and get themselves an extra #1.

I have Tannehill ranked as a much better prospect than many people on here seem to believe. He's not afraid to stand tall in the pocket and deliver passes even if he's about to get hit, reads through progressions, and has much more advanced mechanics than most quarterbacks in spite of his relative lack of experience at the position. He's big, athletic, and has a strong, accurate arm with considerable production under Mike Sherman. He is experienced taking snaps under center and can make throws on the run. I'd grade him closer to Jake Locker than Blaine Gabbert.
