You guys are overreacting. This is basically a contract that allows them to move money around to clear cap space. They can still cut Mark after this year if they wanted to, plus, if he does in fact pan out (highly unlikely at this point), they have him for 5 more years for a very good price.
So it was a wise move on the Jets part. Once they realized they had no chance at Peyton, they cleared space for additions around Sanchez while leveraging themselves for both a longterm relationship with Mark and also the ability to cut him if he sucks.
What bothers me is this statement:
“I’m going to be the starting quarterback for the next few years here, and that’s exciting,” Sanchez said, in comments distributed by the Jets’ P.R. staff. “It gives the team just a reminder that I’m the leader of this team, and I’m excited to get back, and I’m going to be working my tail off these next few months to become the best possible starting quarterback that this franchise can have.”
This statement was released by the Jets PR staff. The bolded sticks out to me. You have to REMIND the team that you're the leader?! And how does paying you money automatically make you the leader of the team?
This whole concept of Mark being the leader is clearly being forced onto the fanbase, and players, and I guarantee you the players aren't buying it. They're trying to manufacture Mark as the leader of the team, but this statement alone just proves that the rumors of the Jets coddeling Mark are very true. Look at that statement. It tells you everything you need to know.
Mark won't succeed. And the Jets will move on after this year. This contract is just window dressing.

I've been saying for some time that Sanchez who entered the league as an extremely raw junior QB with only 12 starts under his belt, would need 4 years to have a breakout year. I think it will come this season and he will move into the upper echelon of NFL QB's.
The Jets obviously believe it also.

No, the Jets believe to protect the already fragile mindset of Mark is to guarentee him money for two more years.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, throw huge guaranteed money at a QB who you have no confidence in rather than find a way to replace him.

Doesn't take a psychologist to figure that out. Of course, this proves he's the 'leader'. Right?

I dont see any other QB on the market that you can honestly say would be a upgrade over Sanchez since Manning wont come, do you?

I can't throw a ******* football to save my life, and yet I still make well under 7 figures. I am definitely doing things wrong.
And by the looks ofthings they could have cut his ass and brought in somebody else with the money off the books for this year.

Turns out his was a good move for the Jets. It opens up over $6 million in cap space for the 2012 season. Then the last 3 years of the deal are all option years for the Jets. So either he lives up to the contract or we'll be able to cut him.

The haters immense as usual....
Sanchez has cleared up money this year to help the Jets out and by the time that his deal COULD falter the Jets cap room, the cap is expected to go up and essentially ease the Jets breathing room.
Believe me Sanchez is not as bad as this board makes him out to be. You guys seriously underrate how bad Brian Schottenheimer was as OC and likewise how AWFUL Wayne Hunter was at RT.

Any QB will be shellshocked if your ***** RT gives you two seconds to study the field until Von Miller comes and spears you to death.
Cmon.

I understand defending Sanchez but you cant deny he has been **** for the last 3 years. QB's have been in worse situations than him and still played to a decent level.
Jay Cutler springs to mind. He had worse receivers and a worse offensive line but he still out performed Sanchez is every way.

Sanchez just needs to let his play do the talking. Who cares what teammates think, they much like the front office have no loyalty to anyone, not even their own teammates. If Sanchez lets his play do the talking, his teammates will forget anything ever happened and turn their total opinion on everything.
Sanchez on the field does everything right that you'd want out of a professional, he just needs to begin to get more harsh rather than try to accommodate guys like Holmes or Burress. Sanchez is almost TOO nice for his own good when you have to crack out the whip and come on guys for not running correct routes.
I am tired of New York over analyzing every single thing a player does and likewise the lack of patience the town has on its players. Fans want everything out of their players and expect their players to shine right away.

Then they're in trouble, but that's unlikely anyway. First season with the new OC, if he struggles they'll probably use the whole learning a new system excuse to keep him around another year anyway.
Given it's basically three option years after the two and they save 6.4 million against the cap, the deal's a lot nicer than I thought initially. I don't love it, but as nice as Manning would have been I think it's good they're not flip flopping on Sanchez right now. I would have supported one more year for him in a new system with hopefully an upgrade at right tackle and a receiver who can stretch the defense a bit, but it looks like there will be two. Honestly though if he sucks next year, you probably draft his replacement in 2013 and let them compete anyway.
The Jets were also basically at the cap coming into the offseason, and now it looks like they almost have 14 million in cap space. Not sure what they plan on doing, but lots of good small moves they can make. Hopefully Tannenbaum doesn't do anything stupid with the room, because that was my second largest concern when I heard about this deal and assumed it would open up cap space.

Sanchez has had his ups and downs. He has come through in big games in 09 and 10 when asked upon and he performed admirably in each of his playoff games. People can discount him due to how great the O-Line was and the running attack but Sanchez when called upon, made the big throws needed to win those tough road games in January.
11 was a let down year and not a good year for Mark. However, he is not alone as to why that offense failed. Wayne Hunter is an embarrassment of a RT and if he is somehow the RT of next year, I will ******* come down and beat the **** out of MR. T myself. Brian Schottenheimer FINALLY is gone and hopefully like Chad Pennington and Brett Favre, hopefully Sanchez falls in the same road as "Thank god I am out of that clown's offense....now I can put on a strong year"

Hey dropout, you should just rename yourself to Sanchez Shield. I could make you an awesome sig.

Also if it happens to be the case that the haters are so much more immense than the supporters, it most likely is more the case of homerism than hating.

JVig I get you think Schotty's a good OC but believe me, he's awful, predictable and outsmarts himself for his own good. Has zero clue on when to focus on the run and when to actually air it out.
I'd so change my name btw just not to Sanchez Shield. I am a huge Sanchez fan and I do call him out on his mistakes, just he's being made out to be Kyle Boller 2.0 on the board. Its a joke.
