Two things.

1. You assume RG3 is going to be better than Rex Grossman. There are no guarantees.

2. The Redskins as of right now have no cap room and little ability to make cap room to sign free agents.

1. I am fairly confident RG3 will be better than Grossman, that bar is set pretty low.

3. Assuming these cap sanctions against the Redskins stick, which I'm not entirely confident they will, the team can spread it out over two years. So if they take half of it this year Washington will still have like $18 million to spend in free agency. That is enough for a couple of big-ticket players, i.e. Vincent Jackson and Carl Nicks.

I believe RG3 will be a lot better than Grossman too. But as a rookie and second year player I am not as certain. And those are the years that count for the draft picks.

Lets just say Snyder and Jones sue the NFL and win. Do you think Jackson and Nicks wait around for the legal matter to settle or do they sign with someone else.

Just wait, the Redskins are going to spend. They will sign at least one high-profile free agent this offseason regardless of any cap penalties from the league. Like I said, even if the penalties stick and they take half this year the Skins still have about $18 million to spend this offseason.

I love the clarity trades like this provide in the long term. If Griffin is a franchise QB, great trade for the Redskins. If he's not, the Redskins flushed 4 valuable picks down the toilet. Either way, good trade for the Rams. Even if Bradford turns out not to be their answer, they have ammo to acquire another top QB prospect down the road.

Looks like Garcon will be RG3's new weapon in DC

Garcon , Helu, Moss, Gaffney, Fred Davis, Cooley (If not cut), Hankerson.

That's plenty of guys to get the football to. Not elite weapons, but definitely not bad.

Quick comment:

I'm not the most well-versed with the new CBA, but I imagine that the Skins can still sign many of the guys they want. What they would need to do is have extremely low bases to go with huge signing bonuses, which allows them to pro-rate it.

They've signed Morgan and Garcon so far, and all indications are that they plan to still be aggressive. If they sue the NFL and win back some of their cap room, they could conceivably restructure things down the line in some fashion (albeit, there's certain limitations on how much they could restructure).

The trade made a lot of sense for both teams. Rams are gonna get quite an infusion of talent through the draft with all those top picks. They are gonna load up in a hurry and finally put a decent team around Sam Bradford.

The only way I think this trade ends up getting questioned at all is if Miami, Seattle, or Cleveland spend a first rounder on Tannehill and Tanehill ends up being a stud franchise QB. That team will look smart anyways.

The salary cap is one of the NFL's great myths. Rarely does a team truly lose or not sign a player they truly want due to the salary cap. Teams can find ways to work around it. It's usually just used as an excuse to cut old, injured and / or unwanted players.

Any question about the Redskins ability to surround RG3 with weapons is now answered.

In day 1 of FA they snag Garcon, Morgan, and it looks like Eddie Royal too.

Signing Garcon, Morgan and rumors that a deal is done with Royal...

This makes me think Santana Moss and Brandon Banks are done in D.C.

Don't know if I'd lump Banks in there. He might be done anyways, but his role was as a return man.

If Royal goes through, as most seem to anticipate, Moss is done there. I just can't see them cutting bait on Hankerson, so he'll likely grab a depth slot.

I think you underestimate this coaching staffs views on hankerson. i think its more likely he is lined up across from garcon starting with either royal or morgan in the slot. shanahan praised hank last year before his injury and his style fits as a nice compliment to garcon.

I'm willing to bet my house that RG3 is better than Beck/Grossman as a Rookie. Beck/Grossman had 16 Td's and 24 INT's. Come on!

I used to really like rgiii but didn't think it was smart for the redskins to give up so much for him.

I just watched some pro day work and his mechanics are much better than I thought they were. Combine that with his brains, work ethic, extreme athleticism, and charisma and he is likely going to be the superstar everyone has been raving about. They didn't overpay and my browns once again effed up.

He's going to be fun to watch.
