I'm sure some of us here have sat in defensive meetings where we've heard similar language. I never heard a coach say go after his ACL or his concussion, but I have heard guys say knock him the F out. That's nothing new.
I don't care about the language that was used in the audio. Whatever gets players riled up--cussing, deep thoughts, music, whatever--that doesn't matter to me. These are big boys in the lockerrooms. They can handle a few f-bombs. I'm actually surprised there wasn't more "colorful" language.

The part the NFL is going to take exception to is the part about hurting people. Whether or not it was before the NFLPA started publicly making a stink about concussions is irrelevant. This is going to be a huge bullet in the gun of the former NFL players if they continue the legal process of taking the NFL to court. No, not just a bullet, it will be a freaking bazooka if the NFL doesn't bring down the sledgehammer on everyone involved in this.

It will go something like this "These are the effects of concussions on players... These are the effects of multiple concussions on players. And here is audio of coaches instructing their players to go directly at the head of 2 players and insinuating it for a 3rd player. Gregg Williams might as well have taken a gun and put it on the table next to a pile of cash, offering a reward for the first person who used that gun on an opposing player." (of course this is hyperbole, but that's how lawyers work)

This is not something that can just be shrugged off. This is not something that can be brushed under the rug. Anyone who tries to say "This is just the way the game is played. This is just what goes on in locker rooms. We knew the public couldn't handle the locker room," is out of touch with reality.

You want to tell your guys to play their ******* hearts out? Great! Tell them to go out there and play harder and hit harder than the other team? Awesome! Tell them to go out and hurt someone? You just crossed the line. Going out with the intention of hurting someone is NOT at the heart of the game. People will get hurt as a result of good, hard, clean play. That is the nature of the game. But this game is violent enough as it is without adding intention to the injury.

I have a feeling that since the NFL wanted the NFLPA's approval of the player suspensions before announcing them, they're planning to hit the players harder than most expect.
This is a very difficult line for the NFLPA. I have to imagine the NFLPA is having a hard time with these suspensions because they generally try to protect their players from losing games and money. Losing anything more than a game or two comes out to a HUGE portion of a player's career. If a regular person misses 5-10 days of work without pay, it comes out to only a small fraction of their 40-50 years in the workforce. If an NFL player misses 10 games? They just missed a significant opportunity to play for their next paycheck.

At the same time, the NFLPA clearly needs to protect its players from intentional injury. I'm interested to see how the NFLPA responds to these suspensions.

It's already been reported only the captains will be suspended which were Vilma, Smith and Fujita.

The only way you could suspend a player is if there is proof said player received payment for a "bounty".

lol...I just read in an article off theredzone, it looks like these audio tapes are going to end the guy's career. I guess he should've thought about what he was doing. I have absolutely no sympathy for him, Payton, or any of the players involved. Personally, I think the players should be handed down firm punishments as well. Whether the argument is that they were "just following orders" or not, they were the ones that executed the hits and then lied about it.

I don't think that's true....Goodell is pretty much a dictator and is going to do whatever he wants. He has no one to answer to but the owners, who apparently love him enough to pay him millions and keep him around for years to come.

With the NFLPA's hands tied by this being a player on player issue, I don't think they're going to resist all that much.

If they suspend a player just based solely on playing defense for the saints watch the lawsuits fly.

About half of the players represented by the NFLPA are offensive guys, who probably don't particularly enjoy statements along the lines of "he becomes human when we ******* take out that outside ACL."

ACL injuries can cost players millions of dollars.

They're bound by what is in their contracts,, which is a ruling by the commissioner and an appeal to Art Shell or that other guy whose name escapes me. Such is the reality of the league.

And this isn't "just playing defense" or else none of this would even be an issue.

What proof is there that all the players partook in the system? Players have choices and can choose not to partake in it.

I didn't say "all," but whatever evidence the NFL has surely lists specific players beyond just the team captains.

what proof is there that the list of players, played for bounty vs just played hard?

He can go after the players that injured the other players, though Warner's injury was accidental/freak injury.

I think head-hunting can be pretty readily recognized when you see it. If you really watch what the players are doing down there, you can see who's involved. Maybe that's just me, and I'm sure it's not enough "evidence" for the NFL to hand down such steep penalties, but when a guy hits Kurt Warner helmet to helmet 10 seconds after the guy threw the ball, I'd say there's a good chance he's involved.

I'm not sure that the NFL needs proof, first of all. If they wanted to, though, they could probably just label the suspended players as "co-conspirators" and call it a day.

Definitely. Goodell does what he wants to do. The players union agrees to the power given to him in the CBA and he only has to answer to the owners.

The players should be glad that at least he doesn't hear their appeals anymore giving them a slight chance at reductions.

whoa. that audio recording certainly doesn't help matters. its not uncommon dialogue in locker rooms, that type of stuff just doesn't leave the locker room.

The irony of this whole thing is that the Niners were the ones who:

1. Won the game
2. Had some of the best offensive output of the year from (Davis,Smith,Gore etc)
3. Was the team that knocked the f#^^$*&ck out of the Saints.
