Local reports say that Knighton could miss the entire 2012 season and this is the last year of his rookie contract. DT is now clearly a possibility for the Jaguars in the first round.

My personal opinion is that you shouldn't take a WR in the top-10 unless he's a Fitzgerald/Johnson type of prospect. The bust-rate with WRs doesn't change much throughout the first two rounds, and so many good WRs get picked in the 20-70 range that you're probably better off to just copy the Packers and take one in the 2nd round every year or two. Use the higher picks on hard-to-fill positions.

this is an interesting development and I think brockers comes into play. LSU DL never seem to live up to hype but that wont stop this guy from going top 10.

My longshot for them is Nick Perry.

They have a private workout with Brockers last month, so he might still be an option now at 7. As the draft gets closer I think we will see the Jags will be hoping to trade out of the top 10 and still get Floyd/Wright/Hill.

They should weigh offers from other teams. If nothing comes through they should pick Ingram.

thinking more about this... mercilus could fit. he certainly has the production and the athletic gifts to warrant the pick. although hes not a senior he was a leader on that team and very tough. the story about him playing with half a finger is very Gene Smith-esque. i could see him being a surprise pick a 7... despite my earlier comments.

I doubt they take a nose at 7. It isn't out of the question but considering they could likely get someone like Thompson or Ta'amu in the 2nd I would think they will be more inclined to go with a WR or pass rusher at 7 unless Claiborne slips. There will be better value for them in the 2nd, 3rd and even 4th rounds at DT.

I do think that Stephon Gilmore is a darkhorse candidate at 7 for the Jags or if they can move down from 7 despite the signing of Aaron Ross. Mathis is on a one year deal, will be 32 when the season starts and is coming off of ACL surgery.

For all Jaguars fans itching to trade down: there is a very hungry team that wears green and white, and they have an insatiable craving for Ingram.

Floyd (and maybe even Hill) might have higher ceiling, but they cant risk a bust and need to surround Gabbert with talent if they want to even have a remote chance of developing him into a quality starting QB.

and if the Browns do trade down, i think the Jags could get it done for just the 70th overall pick, as Cleveland's target will probably be Tannehill (though i honestly hope it isnt), in which case they cant trade any further down or Miami will grab him with the no. 8 pick.

in that scenario, can anyone claim Blackmon for a 1st and an additional 3rd isnt worth it for Jacksonville?
This scenario actually makes some sense to me. Jacksonville has moved up in the past, but on the flip side you don't see a lot of top 10 trades.

Really depends a) if the Jaguars love Blackmon and b) how the Browns feel about Tannehill. If Cleveland does like Tannehill then they're guaranteed to get him, Richardson, or Claiborne at 7, but if not then I doubt they would pull the trigger.

The Jags wouldn't actually have to give up that much either, after a quick glance exchanging Jacksonville's 2nd and 5th for Cleveland's 3rd looks to be just about right on the value chart to make the move.

Jets have the ammo to move up that far, but barely. They'd have to give up a bunch to get to #7, probably (hopefully) more than they'd be willing to.

Jaguars aren't trading up, don't even bother.

If they stay at #7 and he's available, the most likely pick seems to be Fletcher Cox - and that has little to do with the Knighton issue since they play different positions.

After Luck and RG3 there is not a player left that is worth trading up to get for the Jaguars. I think Cox and Mercilus are likely to be a consideration if the top 6 goes as predicted.

That is a luxury pick for the Jags with Alualu going into his 3rd year.

Only if you think Cox cannot play LDE in the NFL.

If none of the "elite" top six players fall the I say make this happen

Trade the 7th for the Jets 16th and 47th

It blows my mind that people are suggesting to trade up to get Blackmon at #4 when he most likely could be there at #7.

Why would you trade up for a WR when this draft is very deep in WR talent? A trade down and picking up an extra 2nd and taking two WR's in the second round while also being able to get a player in the 1st is much smarter.

If Blackmon was a Calvin Johnson or a Larry Fitz type of player, then I could understand trading up for him. Blackmon is very crabtree-esque. Still an upgrade with our WR corps, but not worth a trade up for.

Why the Jaguars want desperately to trade the #7:

Blackmon: They do not think he is worth the #7 and hope someone takes him before their pick so they can avoid the fan outrage.

Floyd: They do not think he is worth the #7 even without off field
issues.

Coples, Ingram, Mercilus and every other rush DE/OLB prospect: The Jags do not think any DE prospect is worth the #7 for various reasons.

If no one falls that leaves Cox who they like but don't love, Gilmore who they are very high on even to the point of perhaps considering him better than Claiborne and Riley Reiff who they like for some reason(I still do not get the Reiff in the top 10 thinking).

The Jaguars are going to be aggressively looking to trade back to a point need better fits value.

Peter King agrees:

"In King’s prediction of the Jaguars’ pick at No. 7, he states that Jacksonville “likes” South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore “a ton,” while also noting that corner is a position of need for the Jags."

Now Lombardi is on board, too.

"NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reported on Path to the Draft Friday night that the Jaguars have a higher grade on Stephon Gilmore than Morris Claiborne.
NFL Films' Greg Cosell also stated in a Friday radio interview that Gilmore is a better prospect than Claiborne, the 2011 Thorpe Award winner. "He's a hot guy," Lombardi said of Gilmore. "I was told Jacksonville actually likes him more than Claiborne." Lombardi also sent Gilmore to the Jags in his latest mock draft. At this point, we'd be surprised if Gilmore got out of the top-ten picks, and No. 7 seems his likeliest destination."

Welcome to the party boys, better late than never. ;)

Redux to the original thread direction:

If they stay at #7 and he's available, the most likely pick seems to be Fletcher Cox

They're going another direction, like DT.
