Default Who is the #3 DE in the Draft?

It appears that Quentin Coples and Melvin Ingram have cemented themselves as the top 2 rated DEs in this class.

But who is the 3rd rated DE in the class?

Whitney Mercilus [Illinois]
Andre Branch [Clemson]
Nick Perry [USC]
Courtney Upshaw [Alabama]
Vinny Curry [Marshall]

Not sure I would call Mevin Ingram as a DE

Don't sleep on Chandler Jones....players with that length and raw ability seem to go much higher than expected

Cam Johnson was more productive playing OLB in a 34 than DE in a 43

it depends on how you define DE.

I voted Mercilus.

Upshaw is the best OLB in the draft. He's probably not the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th best DE

just by watching the games you can see he is more comfortable in Groh's system. Lacks that elite explosion to be a constant threat from the outside but has an all around game.

I voted for Mercilus as well...the guy has a good head, long(active) arms and bends the corner. Wouldnt be suprised to see him go top 15, higher than Upshaw.

not sure where you're getting those stats (I'm not a big stats person to begin with) but Virginia has transitioned to a 4-3 defense over these last two seasons and Cam has continued to become a better player as an end showing wonderful use of his hands and does a nice job of working down the line against the run...he's not going to be an elite pass rusher (I am not sure any end in this class will be elite) but he's as complete of a defensive end as you're gonna find in this class

Curry is my #1 DE. Perfect frame, plays with terrific leverage and explodes out of his stance at the snap.

I love Upshaw and Perry but as 3-4 OLBs. I think Ingram is a 3-4 OLB too but to me he's just blah.

I understand why people compare Coples to Tuck, but he stands straight up and is easily blocked.

Mercilus has a great frame and fluid hips but he couldn't shed a block to save his life. I think he'll struggle in the NFL.

My list:
1. Whitney Mercilus, Illinois
2. Quinton Coples, North Carolina
3. Vinny Curry, Marshall
4. Melvin Ingram, South Carolina
5. Nick Perry, U.S.C.

So, I suppose I'll vote for Mercilus.

I'll vote for Mercilus because he has the skillset to develop into an elite rusher in either a 4-3 or 3-4. He may even end up being my top defensive end pre-draft.

I certainly wouldn't want to play Melvin Ingram at 4-3 DE in the NFL, maybe that's just me. Coples yes, but I'm very lukewarm on him to start. I'm not really sold on any pass rusher in this class, Upshaw might be my favorite out of the lot of them but I'm not positive I love him as a 4-3 DE either.

As 4-3 DE's:

1) Quentin Coples
2) Nick Perry
3) Courtney Upshaw
4) Whitney Mercilus
5) Melvin Ingram

That list changes radically if you're talking about a 3-4 though.

Much like your #3 WR poll, I do not believe it is so clear cut that Coples and Ingram are the two best defensive ends in the draft. I think we will all find out after the draft that teams are all over the place with the top five ends (coples, ingram, mercilus, perry, upshaw). I personally have Perry ranked as my top pass rusher with Mercilus not too far behind. Coples is very talented and scheme diverse but his attitude is worrisome. As for Ingram, I love his motor and intensity but he is more scheme specific. He lacks the burst, the reach, and the plethora of moves to be dangerous. His short arms are also a cause for concern.

Wouldn't be surprised to see all five go Top-20, but the order is still up for debate.
