NFL Network Won't Show Players on Phones Backstage
Quote:
Rich Eisen @richeisen
NFLN will not show green room prospects on phone 1st nite of draft. Now, let's work on teams NOT tweeting out their picks b4 announcement
|
Tremendous news. Definitely watching NFLN this year. Richard Deitsch also tweeted that ESPN is in talks with the NFL to prevent this from happening as well.

I tweeted this to Eisen a few days ago:
Quote:
|
@richeisen How about not spoiling picks by showing prospects on their phone backstage? Just show the reaction after the pick
|
So obviously, this all stemmed from me. You're all very welcome ;)

Thanks djp! But this wont prevent the analysts from knowing even if we cant see it. We're now subjected to them basically cheating with someone in their ear telling them the pick. We're going to get a lot of right "predictions" from the panel.

For the people who don't get NFL Network, can ESPN do the same? I HATE when they do this.

I'll miss it. I happen to like seeing all the emotion coming from players and family when they received their phone calls. I think it will be far more drab with just the name calling and a lot less of an emotional moment.
Really, how importantt was waiting another 10 seconds to hear a name, I want to see the emotion but a lot of that will disappear as players after being named are rushed to the podium.
I was just as excited to see who got the next phone call as I'll be when they call their names at the podium now, but I suspect an awful lot of the emotion will be lost.
People always see the other side of the mountain as being greener but the reality often turns out to be the opposite and I suspect that is what will happen in this case. The draft could get pretty cold when you remove the emotion of players, family and friends.

This is the best news ever! In fact i dont think teams should be allowed to phone the players. They should find out when Goddell announces it.

They never said they wouldn't show that, just not before the picks. It's possible that they show the players reactions after the pick is announced between picks.

As a NFL Gamepass subscriber (which includes NFL Network) I truly appreciate this! Will be way more fun this year watching the first part of the draft. I'm sure my fellow Scandinavian Klaus agrees :)

Last year the analysts on multiple occasions continued to discuss who a team would take even after the viewers had seen one of the players in the green room already on the phone.

I know it wont mean much (if anything at all) but I'd like to get a TON of people to tweet at ESPN saying they're going to watch the draft on NFL Network unless ESPN doesn't show the players backstage.
EDIT: article from NFL.com
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...headline_stack
Quote:
Let's fast forward to next Thursday, opening night of the NFL draft. With the Indianapolis Colts on the clock, time ticking away, the speakers crackle to life: "The pick ... is in."
Before we hear a peep from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the camera cuts to Andrew Luck, huddled over a phone, smiling from ear to ear.
In this case, nobody is surprised, but as we move through the first round, these tip-offs affect the drama of the event.
Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch first reported Wednesday that the NFL, NFL Network and ESPN are discussing ways to avoid revealing top draft picks to viewers before they're announced.
The NFL subsequently confirmed it won't show draftees on the phone in the green room before the announced pick on the first night of the draft.
"It's also in effect for NFL Network and ESPN, which may broadcast from other locations such as a player's house or an agent's office," league spokesman Brian McCarthy told NFL.com on Wednesday.
It's a start, but problems extend to the draft's later rounds as well.
"Every team, scout, GM, etc. has access to the NFL draft's pick database, which is updated once a card is turned in. Much earlier than on TV," tweeted Rotoworld's Josh Norris, who also served time as a scouting intern for the St. Louis Rams. "As soon as you read, 'The pick is in,' (teams) already know who is selected. Amazing how far behind TV gets on the 2nd and especially 3rd days."
Issues remain, but it's a start.
|
does this mean that NFLN and ESPN won't be filming in the green room because the NFL won't be filming players back there? Or are NFL Network and NFL considered one in the same and ESPN will still be filming?

Amazing. I hope more fans pressure ESPN to do this too. Its just a better experience when we get to see genuine reactions from the analysts. Just wait 15 seconds to show them crying in the green room.
