I understand Iamcanadian's argument, but you can still see all that 10 seconds after the pick is made. Best of both worlds.

I assume they'll be filming the guys, and after the pick is made they'll show them receiving the call and everything. We won't miss anything, we'll just get the announcement first.

That's a nice change for round 1. Here's what I want for the later rounds: show every pick, rather than make us wait 15 minutes to see 6 picks at once. And to not have to listen to Trey Wingo complain about how boring the last half of the draft is.

Not showing the later picks really bugs the crap out of me. I'd love it if the NFL set up a separate webcast at nfl.com, where they actually announced the picks.

Its much better to wait until the announcement, otherwise there's no point in having Goodell announce if everyone just finds out via the prospect's phone call. The draft's biggest shockers in the last few years (Ginn, DHB, Ponder) have all come unexpected, and it's what makes the draft memorable. I would count Alualu but i didn't watch the 2010 1st round...i imagine that was a shock too. Anyways i can't wait for this year's draft and the inevitable "out of nowhere" 1st rounder.

Alualu wasn't shown on the phone, but Mike Mayock predicted it. I think without a doubt Mayock had a word in the ear from production about that.

Just what we need, another network deciding what we shouldn't be allowed to see. What's the big deal about seeing a player on his phone shortly before his name is called? It's wimpy to need protection from that. The draft is also on ESPN radio for people who prefer not having the BIG surprise spoiled. Good grief.

Now we'll know who a team picks by having it announced by Roger Goodell first, instead of seeing the player on camera 10 seconds before the pick is annnounced. Oh happy day. Our long nightmare is over...

Except the fact that TONS of people have been clamoring about this for a while and have repeatedly told ESPN and NFL Network that they don't want to see the draft pick before he's officially selected by Goodell. Those who are upset about this change are in the minority.

Hah. How would you know they are in the minority? If someone's happy with the way things are they aren't likely to complain. Honestly, I barely knew this was an issue until now.

Because on all the NFL messageboards I go on, probably about 80-90% are ecstatic about the idea and only a few complain. Even Scott Van Pelt had a segment on his show about how he absolutely disliked how media outlets showed the draft picks prior to being taken. It takes away the sense of anticipation and surprise.

Guess I'm just surprised so many people don't like seeing the draftees getting the call before their names are announced. Oh well. I'll have to join those boards and ask them what the heck they think they are doing, and tell them I'm speaking for the silent majority.

I think it's cool to see guys getting the call, just not before the pick is announced.
Not sure why they can't record it and then just air the footage right after.

Maybe they will, although most of the time after the pick is announced they are showing the player coming out, getting his picture taken with Goodell, and then highlight footage with analysis at that point.
Guess it's not that big of a deal, I'm just one of those who has enjoyed seeing players getting a call, or the drama of the likes of Brady Quinn not getting a call until the Browns traded back up to select him.

Found it ironic that many of the picks were spoiled even though we didn't get to see most of the players on the phones with teams. I heard Schefter was tweeting the picks before they were announced, and often the talking heads would say something like, "Well, could this be the (player's position) from (school)?", because they already knew it would be.
As far as seeing players on the phones, we probably wouldn't have seen alot of that anyways, considering how quickly the 1st round went and the number of trades that went down.

NFLN spoiled a couple of picks, but I guess it wasn't as bad as ESPN. I barely watched any of the ESPN broadcast. I don't see what the big deal is with wanting to announce a pick before it's made. Just let whoever wants to have it spoiled follow Schefter on twitter or something.

Incorrect, for most, Schefter tweeted the picks after they were announced, but the delay on the TV feed didn't have them announced first.

Unless there was a 3-4 minute TV delay, Schefter was absolutely spoiling picks on twitter in the first round.

Yeah. Schefter made it so I had to avoid twitter. I tried unfollowing him but everybody retweets everything he says anyway.

There seems to be a pretty significant delay between the time that the pick is technically made and the time that the MC gets up on stage and announces the pick. The real draft doesn't stop, though, just because Goodell is slow. On IRC this year, somebody kept pointing out that the day two television broadcast was sometimes running three or four picks behind the real draft.

Cleveland sports radio knew (because of Schefter's tweets) two picks ahead of when it was announced on tv that Weeden was the Browns pick at #22. ESPN was worse spoiling picks than NFL Network.

The reason some prefer seeing players on the phone with the team drafting them is seeing the player's reaction to the good news. Watching Schefter on Twitter spoiling picks isn't quite the same.
As I mentioned in my post earlier today, I doubt we would have seen many players on the phone anyway this year in the 1st round, simply because the picks came in so fast, and the talking heads had to also keep viewers up to date on trades, along with coverage of players hugging Goodell and getting their pictures taken.
