Shawne Merriman
http://www.theredzone.org/BlogDescri...s/Default.aspx
Merriman claims his Achilles is healed up and he's ready to play. What's some opinions? Can he again be a difference maker in the NFL? He did look good in limited time last year.

Of course he says that. He wants to make money again. I doubt he'll ever sniff 10 sacks/year again in his career, assuming anyone even signs him.

He was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills last year. He's still on their roster.

Merriman's actually still a good player for the few games is body can hold up for, unfortunately with all of the roids he just can't stay on the field for very long.

His career is probably over. He's worth holding onto just to see what he can give you. It can't hurt. But I wouldn't go into the season expecting anything from him.

Yeah, it sure looks like this is truth.
Roids are a helluva drug.

He was our best outside backer for about 4 games last season before getting hurt. I think that's the best you can get out of him, at this point. I love having him around, he talks up the place, lobbies free agents, and has really grown to it after his initial displeasure with the waiver claim. It could be nice too see what he offers in a more limited role with who we brought in (lot of money at the position, right now), but there's little expectation for him.

I saw that article earlier. Can honestly say I've completely forgotten about him. But if him and Williams can start putting a ton of pressure on the QB that defense could be a force.

Also with the packages they can introduce with Merrimen, Williams, and Anderson, he may be a lesser priority for blockers. That'll certainly help his productivity and possibly even his health.

He was so awesome the first 2-3 years he was in the league, kind of shame to see him in this shape.

Buddy Nix still loves him. He'll keep him on his roster until his legs fall off.

I'm pretty sure i could find an article where Merriman gives that 'i'm really 100% now' quote every year from 2007 on.

Just for the fun of throwing some fuel on the fire....
There were some strong opinions about the Giants swapping Rivers / Eli and giving two picks away that turned out to be Pro Bowlers in Merriman and Kaeding. Interesting how things look a few years later.

People are going to Make Shawne Merriman threads every offseason until 2020 because of a three year stretch he had that ended five years ago.
Five years!

Correction. And there's no scientific proof that Roids do that. Maybe if Merriman had gotten the surgery after the 2007 season was over like AJ Smith wanted to then maybe he would have come back okay.

PEDs allow you to put a greater load on your muscles, ligaments and tendons than one would normally if they weren't on juice. Guys using the gear tend to overtrain because they can on roids.
That said, Merriman still should have been able to come back from a tendon injury, but the achilles rupturing is potentially the worst injury any football player can have.
Merriman may be healed, but his achilles tendon may never be 'right' again.
I thought he was still good enough coming back from an injury and off the juice to at least become a decent starting OLB.

I understand that there's correlation that one can come up for this being a fact. And I probably spoke out of turn regarding the steroid things.
However, what always bothered me is that people in general (not you necessarily) said that the issue for his fall is the steroid use. It wasn't the reason he's a shell of himself. It's because of what Jeff Fisher and Kevin Mawae did that day as well as Merriman's own stupidity in waiting so long to get surgery.
The steroid thing is an excuse in my opinion in putting him down since he was an exceptional player even after getting "caught" during the 2006 offseason. He then subsequently had a great 2006 season and probably would have broken the sack record if he wasn't suspended. In 2007, he continued to be a great player despite Cottrell's complete incompetence in using him properly for the first half of that season.
Merriman could have been one of the greats. As a SD fan, I saw him as more than just a one dimensional pass rushing specialist. He was a true 3 down OLB that we have been trying to replace for the longest time. He could play WOLB or SOLB, just as beastly against the run as he was at rushing the passer. And he also decent in zone coverage (the joys of having Cottrell having him do that for half of the season). If he had continued doing what he did, people would have forgotten just like they forgot about Peppers suspension and Harrison's.
