Yes. I only pick on the Bengals because I have some imaginary axe to grind.

I point out that the Bengals have a tendency to take players with character concerns and / or freakish physical tools, just like I point out that the Jaguars steer clear of players with character concerns and like small school prospects, etc. There is no secret vendetta against Cincy.

Pretty much this. It's not something new, and since it keeps happening it's not as if it's a false stereotype or anything. Saying the Bengals love to give chances to players with "character concerns" goes in line with saying the Patriots love to trade down, the Jags love to take their players regardless of position, the Raiders like speed, etc.

Yeah well a lot of people consider Coples throwing up 8 sacks in his sleep and erasing all context from his senior year a fair reason to knock the pick.

Also think he'll see more LB than what's been hinted. His frame and athleticism can go either way....

You were so right, I was completely off-base to have the audacity to infer that the Cincinnati Bengals tend to take chances on prospects with character concerns. My humble apologies, sir.

Bengals bag Burfict
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 28, 2012, 9:13 PM EDT

Vontaze Burfict, the onetime first-round prospect whose disappointing 2011 season was followed by a disastrous Scouting Combine and Pro Day, has found his NFL home in Cincinnati.

The Bengals agreed to terms with Burfict as an undrafted free agent shortly after the 2012 NFL draft ended without Burfict’s name being called. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis had a long talk with Burfict at Arizona State’s Pro Day, and Lewis was believed to be high on Burfict’s potential.

Once considered among the most talented linebackers in college football, Burfict was called for way too many penalties during his final season at Arizona State, and he also had a reputation as a player who was more interested in delivering big hits than in actually following his assignment within the defense. He was also reportedly a disruptive presence in the Arizona State locker room. So there’s a lot not to like about him.

Still, Burfict did make enough plays early in his college career that he once looked like a potential first-round pick. It’s easy to envision him making the roster in Cincinnati.

Marshall started most of his games at FS not CB, I believe he only started the last 2 games at CB once Rhodes returned

but I do expect Fleming will be the eventually starter opposite of PP, probably not until week 5 or so, we all know that Whis doesn't play rookies

Like I said a few days ago. Cinci is the NFL's halfway house. Marvin Lewis must fancy himself a parole officer.

My favorite running joke on this forum, besides everything J-Mike does, is that all Bengals fans that get offended every time someone suggests they take a lot of players with character concerns. Every single one of them, every single time.

Scott, what are your thoughts on the Dolphins' selection of Lamar Miller in the 4th round? Seems like great value and could take over for Bush in a year when his contract runs out. I'd love to get your analysis on that one.

Obviously, I LOVED the pick!

Yea you are absolutely right taking a flier on Burfict as an UDFA is the pinnacle of moral ineptitude. Does the kid even have a criminal record? Are you aware that his father was a drug dealer and thus his upbringing was definitely difficult? Oh wait I forgot taking bad penalties and 'reportedly' being disruptive in the locker room and failing a combine drug test is against the law.

I'm not saying you are even wrong that we tend to take those risks or that you have a vendetta against us but I just feel like you basically copy and paste the same thing you say every year in your mock/analysis when we pick a kid who isn't Tim Tebow. How about talking about the guys we've drafted that are model citizens for once? Or even highlighting some of these 'bad character' KIDS who have turned out to be good people ala Bernard Scott. Its just the same crap year in and year out in that regard.

Don't get me wrong I love the site as well as the work you put in and obviously frequent it quite often, but this is getting a bit old. Quite stereotypical IMO especially seeing as we don't have many bad apples on this team anymore.

Scott,

Being a Tampa Bay fan, I feel I must disagree with your assessment on our pick of Barron. While I think they could have gotten a bit more in the trade (a third rounder maybe), Barron fits so much better into what Coach Schiano is trying to do there. The Bucs were such a horrible tackling team and Claiborne would not have been any help in that area. From your own breakdown of him, you state in weaknesses that he has "marginal tackling ability". If you look at the defensive players that the Bucs have brought in by both free agency and the draft, one thing they have in common is they are all plus tacklers (even Eric Wright who does force the run well for a corner). I firmly believe the Bucs were targetting Barron all along and didn't want to take him at 5, but at the same time, didn't wanna lose out on an extra pick, so they may have settled for a bit less than they might have been able to squeeze out of it. Also, without that extra 4th rounder, I doubt they would have ended up with both Martin and David since both throse trades up were facilitated by that 4th rounder.

How do you have Devon Still as a talented underachiever? He was DPOY this past year, unless you're saying because he didn't have that big year until his senior year.

My father was a drug dealer, and I'm not as r-tarded as Vontaze. So, unless daddy was doing something extra messed up, like shooting him up before sending him to school, I don't see the connection between his daddy's source of income and Taze's inability to control himself.

Quite stereotypical IMO especially seeing as we don't have many bad apples on this team anymore.
yeah ur right rey mauluaga is gonna be a great mentor for him ;)

He might not have been caught by the police, but how do you suppose he failed the drug test?

Yeah. Failing a drug test isn't illegal, but smoking drugs in such a way that you fail a drug test, certainly is.

As a pure football fan and someone who would like to see the Chiefs get off the slide, I hope Poe lives up to his billing.

But I remember watching Vince Wilfork dominate at Miami, I saw Ngata look like he was playing against HSers in the Pac 10, Ndamukong Suh wasl a Terminator cyborg playing for Nebraska, and BJ Raji was IMO the best Dlineman by far in the ACC in 2007-8.

Poe is bigger, faster and stronger than all these guys, yet doesn't have a fraction of the dominant game film those guys had as collegians, even as Poe played at a lower level D1 conference.

IMO if Romeo Crennel can coach Dontari Poe into a solid NFL pro, he deserves a contract extension.
Can Romeo teach an athlete instincts or a feel for the game?? We'll see.
There have been numerous guys with elite measurables for a given position who just weren't good football players.
Being a beast specimen at NT doesn't mean you can't bust royally.
