NFL.com posted an article suggesting the Dolphins drafted Martin to replace Jake Long
And this strikes me as completely absurd, injury concerns aside. You don't just c̶u̶t̶ let a young, All-Pro left tackle walk.

Why wouldn't they? That way they can go sign Andy Levitre and Chad Clifton and proceed to win championships. Am I doing this right?

Replace an all pro LT in his prime with a marshmallow, yea that's smart . No chance he is cut, Martin at RT opposite Long.

They will write about anything now. I don't care if they do say it is possible due to a philosophy change, this won't happen. If it does it is a nail in the coffin for someone. Not only can you not 'dispose' of a franchise LT, I don't see that kind of ability out of Martin.

Who's this "Dan Hanzus" fellow anyways? I mean, this isn't some little aside, this is an article that's got a photo next to it on the front page. I'm not someone who follows the Dolphins, but there are pretty knowledgable fans here so I wondered if someone else knew something I didn't. It just seems so obvious that they'd just... play him at the other tackle spot... that I felt the need to ask if there was something else going on. I mean, the Seahawks just did exactly the same thing last year, except it was a first round pick. (Martin is probably better than Carpeter, imo). But... I don't know. I just saw that article and wondered how some of these people have writing jobs, if the only basis for the speculation is "Jake Long had a couple injuries last year - DOLPHINS JUST DRAFTED A TACKLE, DURRRRR."

Did I say "cut?" The article didn't say that, it said he was going into his last year and he might be "on shaky ground." Still, it seems absurd to think the Dolphins would be shrugging their shoulders and picking up a pretty-good-but-not-exceptional player in the second round because they really think their All-Pro left tackle might not be there this time next year.
EDIT: I did say "cut" in the original post. That is very misleading, and I'll change it.

You gotta be kidding me. People will write anything these days to make the Dolphins look bad on everything they do. If the media was smart enough, they would know that we have no other LT on the team and we also need a starting RT.

What could the Dolphins get for Jake Long. Just out of interest.

If they traded him now, I imagine it'd be two-firsts territory.

Honestly, I almost feel like this is the point of the article. Like people have been ragging on the Dolphins so much, some editor thought, "Hey, you know what would get a bunch of hits? An article suggesting they might be thinking about letting their best player go for no reason."

would any Fins fans stick around if they trade or let walk one of the better LTs in the NFL? this story just seems so far out there that it's almost unbelievable.
here's how i would see this happening if Long leaves: Long plays this contract out telling Miami he wants to test the FA market. Miami uses the franchise tag then he leaves after the 2013 season. he would be 29 when he was playing for another team in 2014. jesus... even typing that makes it a terrible deal. he would have to totally spurn the Dolphins in order for him to play elsewhere. i can't even believe that any team would contenplate not signing a top 3-5 LT (that might be conservative) who will only be 27 when this season starts. makes no sense to me. i get that this Dan Hanzus writes for the NFL and all, but how credible is he?

They already let their best skill position player go for no reason. Lulz.
Anyway, I read something about it via PFT earlier. thought about posting it here, but I was like "Nah. That's way too stupid, even for the Dolphins. Some dick is just trying to get page views."

Yeah, and that's something that gives them the confidence to even run the article in the first place..I'm surprised he didn't reference it in the first paragraph, but I didn't even click the link so I wouldn't be surprised if he actually did.

The distinction between LT and RT is slowly starting to blur as teams increasingly move their pass rushers around. If Martin becomes a stud OT, then that just means that the Dolphins have two stud OTs.

People write things like this to get page hits and controversy. Now it is a thread on the biggest draft forum out there causing a discussion. Going against the grain is what gets you noticed now-a-days.

This. Ironically it's a guy most people never heard of before trying to drum up some interest in his name/story. I guess this is just what media has turned into now. I read this article as soon as it was posted, and it was stupid I just clicked out and didn't think twice about it. Anyone who even slightly follows football knows there is no chance that happens.
