Default Sanchez or Clemens to start the season?

This is one of the toughest decisions as an NFL team to make. Do you throw the rookie QB into the fire and hope he responds to it well or do you play it safe and let him sit until you believe he's ready? I know it's still very early and as we get closer it will become more clear, but I want to see what you guys think the Jets should do.

Personally, I think Sanchez has a world of talent and would benefit from playing right away. Obviously, there will be growing pains, but I think it would benefit us in the long run.

I think they'll do the right thing and play whomever earns it. I'd expect throughout the off-season Sanchez will show himself to be worlds ahead of Clemens as a field general which will lend them towards start Mark. But, I could see Clemens looking better and starting the season with Sanchez playing in the third game at the latest, unless Clemens Drew Brees's it.

I'd like to see Clemens start, but if Sanchez is that much better than him in TC and the pre-season i see no reason why he shouldn't start.

I think it is probably better for Sanchez (and the Jets) long term if Clemens starts early on. There have been a lot of guys who started too soon and never got their confience back. I think a situation similar to what the Giants did (eli started mid season) would be the best scenario. But if Sanchez clearly outplays Clemens in camp than ofcoruse they would have to reconsider.

My ideal scenario would be Sanchez clearly winning the job based on his play from wire to wire. I'd like it if he was able to establish himself as a leader early and back it up wit his play on the field.

Realistically, its gonna be tough to justify starting a guy with as little experience as Sanchez week 1. Dont forget that Clemens has experience after competing with Pennington and sat behind Favre for a season learning from an all time great. Clemens could easily be surprisingly good and prove to be a solid starter for the whole year.

Now that it's been stated that we have a competition, I would like to see Sanchez win the job wire to wire as Josh said. Really though, I would've liked to see the organization hand Clemens the job this season and let Sanchez sneak into the starting lineup if he outplays him.

Wouldn't be shocked to see Clemens pull a Drew Brees, for all of his shortcomings he's a talented guy with experience in the system. Or to put it in terms similar to what happened at USC, have Clemens pull a John David Booty and beat out Sanchez because of his experience and because he needs to win the starting job more.

I just think sitting someone, particularly someone as inexperienced as Sanchez, makes sense if only for just a year. We'll see how it plays out, but the way things are going now and how the QB competition is set up I'd like to see Sanchez win it.

I want Clemens to start the season as the QB. The inexperience of Sanchez really scares me. I want to know what happens if Clemens becomes the starter and has a really good year?

If Clemens has a really good year and not just a solid year, I think it would be his job to lose. Then if he doesn't perform well, it will be Sanchez' turn. If Clemens stays productive, we would have another Drew Brees situation on our hands.

I don't think we should keep Sanchez on the bench for inexperience's sake. He has a lot of character so I hardly doubt he'd wilt under the bright lights, and I have to assume our OL is far better than that of the teams that permanently screwed up their QBs with theirs (Boller, Carr, etc.). If he's ready, he's ready. If he's inexperienced, how much good will it really serve him to not be getting any experience? Generally QBs have to sit it out early because their team is either too poor or they have too great of deficiencies in their game. By the end of the off-season, I doubt either is the case. Plus, a lot of what Sanchez does is about chemistry, both in terms of leadership and in being a WCO sort of QB. So, I think the best course of action would be to allow him to gain camaraderie with guys like Cotch, Keller, and the OL in general.

Still wouldn't mind Clemens starting the season though. But I just think the inexperience thing is a bad excuse to keep Sanchez off the field, and since I feel he'll prove to be the better leader, it'd be a bit of an issue for the team to be rallying behind their second stringer.

Agreed, if the only reason for not starting Sanchez is inexperience than he should be the starting QB because he wont get much experience from holding a clip board. He should be out there getting playing time with his teammates and taking the lead of his team.

I still think the best course of action is going to be playing Kellen Clemens, although Sanchez is a better quarterback. The Jets played pretty well last year, which I attribute a lot to having Brett Favre there instead of either a rookie or Kellen Clemens. Say what you want about him and his play at the end of the season, but he had 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in the first 11 games, with a high completion percentage and an 8-3 record. Him and Mangini might have cost the Jets the playoffs down the stretch, but I doubt the Jets start 8-3 with Kellen Clemens there. Anyways, I'm getting off topic.

Basically, the Jets outplayed themselves last year similar to how the Dolphins did. They probably should have had (and needed) a top-10 pick to begin with, but instead they had to move up into there to get a quarterback because there were desperately in need of one and went 9-7 last year. This is very much a team that still needs upgrades before they're a contender. Mark Sanchez could eventually play like Aaron Rodgers or Matt Ryan, but I'd play things safe and start Clemens just to try and make sure I get a nice return on Sanchez later on.

My personal opinion is that i want the player who wins the head-to-head battle of everything leading to the regular season. I believe that Sanchez has shown lots of moxy and leadership to his teammates to the point that he wouldn't just be looked at as a rookie who is getting given the job and that if he is starting it is because he earned it. You want to show all the troops that the best player will start, and 'we' want to win now! If Sanchez doesn't win the starting job, that isn't a huge negative, he can learn and then we can see what Clemens has. However, i don't think that you hold a guy back if he is clearly playing better than the other, you got to show your team you are thinking in the now as well as long term. I can only hope, and assume, that this is the approach that the coaching staff is taking.

I'm not worried about the team taking a big step back with losing Favrea and outplaying themselves because of better coaching and the upgrades to the defense.
Basically, as most people have said, I just want to give both qbs a legit shot to win the job and whoever plays better in training camp and the preseason should win it.

I think the one thing we have to worry about is Sanchez's confidence. I know hes a confident kid, but some young QBs get shaken early in their career and never overcome it. I'm not saying he shouldnt play but its something that bears watching. I think best case scenario is Clemens starts the season and we ease Sanchez in garadually, maybe by week 6. Obviously we run ths risk of Clemens playing too well to relinquish his job, but thats not necessarily a bad problem now is it?

Don't forget this whole year will be a series of firsts for Sanchez (both off field and on) and it may be a lot ot ask for him to take over a playoff contender right from the get go.

Just my opinion...

I see where you are coming from, and that is a lot of pressure to have him step right into the fire. However, i would say that the pressure will be there regardless of when he comes in, being the 'Franchise QB' and the 5th overall pick, etc. It may decrease if they are losing with Clemens before he goes in, but whether it be game 1 or game 13, his confidence will waver depending on how he performs, not just if it is early in the season. I find it hard to blame early confidence loss as a primary reason certain high prospect QBs don't pan out...seems like an easy way out. Guys like Boller, Smith, Carr didn't not do anything in the NFL due to starting early and losing their confidence, although that probably didn't help, but it was becasue they just simply weren't what they were hyped up to be. All 3 had questions coming in and were never able to evolve past them.

The cream will rise to the top, i truely believe that. If you can play in this league, you will play in this league.

I agree ith that for the most part. I dont think Carr and the lot would have been franchis QBs had they not started but they may have been better off sitting for a bit. Guys like Aikman and Elway started from the beginning and were awful and they turned out to be Hall of Famers, so it is certainly dependent on the individual.

Its just that the longstanding belief has always been rookie QBS don't win, and I am just afraid that Flacco and Ryan's success may affectively cloud the Jets' memory. Either way it should be interesting and I am looking forward to training camp!!!!

Training camp will show who the right man for the job is. The players on the team all will hold an opinion, and the coaches, as a means to provide confidence to the team, will go with the player playing the best and who gives them the best chance to win. There is upside to both players winning, so i'm not sure we have a negative outcome....

With all of the Sanchez starting talk, anybody think that there's a chance he doesn't come to camp on time? The guy really seems like a competitor that's going to want to be there so I hadn't really thought about it, but it is a possibility. Don't think we've really discussed it though.

I find it hard to believe because I think that both the Jets and Sanchez will do what needs to be done to get him there on time so that he can get up to speed as fast as possible.

+1

Also, Clemens is cool as hell, and unless Sanchez shows complete mastery of the offense theres no point in starting a guy with 16 whole college starts.

Sitting certainly didn't hurt Rivers, Palmer, Cassel, and Eli.

i think Sanchez should start. he is fat, quick and talented. we can not keep in the dug out for showing this lame excuse that he is not experience. if we do not give chance to talented guys then we will not gonna have legend guys. so think Sanchez should be given a chance.

jorgea hopes to escalate quickly but not get out of hand.
Default Who to Start

I think the best player of these two deserve to start
