SWDC Top 100?
Update.
Quote:
Everyone can start PM'ing their lists now. I'll be accepting them until May 27th, 11:59pm EST. That's 24 days from now. The concept is simple, who are the best players going into the 2012 season, at each position. Compile a top 10 from QB, through 43DE, 34DE to S. I almost sorted tackles and guards into their seperate right and left positions but decided against it. Don't shy away from ranking RT in the Top 10 if they're better at what they do. Free safeties and strong safeties are grouped ito safeties.
Quarterbacks.
Running Back.
Fullback.
Wide Recievers.
Tight Ends.
Offensive Tackles.
Guards.
Centers.
4-3 Defensive Ends.
3-4 Defensive Ends.
4-3 Defensive Tackles.
3-4 Nose Tackles.
4-3 Outside Linebackers.
3-4 Outside Linebackers.
4-3 Inside Linebackers.
4-3 Inside Linebackers.
Cornerbacks.
Safeties.
Returners.

If you haven't already seen the Overrated and Underrated threads in the Pro Football section then go check them out. In those threads, it's hard to actually gauge who is and isn't over/under rated and although we have an idea, and that comes from the media mostly, we don't really know where each other ranks them.
It actually gave me an idea of gathering some of the more respected and rational posters and having each submit some sort of Top 100 list like NFL Network's via PM. And from there I'd average out each individuals' ranking and put it out the Pro Football thread as discussion. And discussion there will be plenty of.
I think it'd be kind of cool to see where everyone ranks the players in the NFL since everyone here seems to have some sort of opinion on just about any and every player. Compare and contrast ours to that of the experts, etc,. I'm willing to put in the time of gathering lists if there is enough interested in submitting one. It'll give us a better idea of the general consensus among the board.
Even if you wanna make a list of Top 10 players by position, I'm down with that, too.
How do we feel about this? Who would be interested? Any suggestions? Ideas stemming from this?
It's seems like an off season kind of thing to do, I know.

I like the idea overall but a full top 100 would probably be messy. I think that top 10 for each position would work smoother, maybe with a thread for each position for arguments before a final PM vote for that group. With a position by position vote you don't get only QBs in the top 10 because of positional value or something like that.

You're probably right about doing the Top 10 by position and then moving forward from there. Scale it down a bit before we get into the grander scheme of things. I do like the idea of going to a PM vote before moving on after discussion.

I'd rather do a top ten by position and have that determined before doing a top 100.
EDIT: niel89 beat me to it. I'm with him.

I would be totally interested in something like this. I agree with a few other posters that we would need to break it down make a top 10 at each position, debate each spot and then compile a list.
The biggest thing is that it would need to be decided is the top 100 based off who we think would be the best going into 2012 or is it based of careers? Is it more of a projection on next year or reflection on the last few years?

Maybe after breaking it down to top ten at each position we can reach common ground on positional value? I can just see the discussion if two players at two different positions are valued equally and we would have to discuss positional value at that time. It would take forever to compile the top 100 in that case.

It would have to be the best players in the NFL right now. Not a career achievement award or a list of who has the most potential but instead who are the best to step on the field right now. Whenever 'right now' may be.

This is kind of why I would rather have a smaller group debate it than the whole board. More likely that common ground would be established sooner and everything gets on the same page instead of 'Cam Newton because he's on a rookie record pace' or 'Andrew Luck, duh'.

1. Alex "Top 1" Smith
2-10. Irrelevant

I'd say do it after the draft, would be nice during that lull. Real good idea though.

That depends on where you rank Alex Smith. QB of the 49ers.
But good idea and I concur that we should start with a top ten position and than move onto the top 100.

Definitely higher then whoever is the QB of the Packers. That guy is so bad I can't even remember his name. Alex Smith would be my #2 QB, right behind Cam Newton of course. He's a SUPASTAR!!!!

I would put a restriction on rookies and I feel like that would get a lot of panties in a bunch.
This will be done post-draft, starting with position lists.

Great idea TJ. Top 10 lists sound better and definitely something to do in the offseason.
