Chris Long Contract Situation

I think we need to get going on a new contract with Chris Long, as he is entering his contract year. It would be really nice to get it done sooner rather than later. It only gets more expensive as time goes on, and Long has a lot of leverage due to his high cap number in 2012.

Cameron Wake just signed a 5-year, $49 million extension with Miami. You have to think Long's deal will be significantly bigger.

I think it'll be around 6-years 70-75 million.

If we could get him for that I would be ecstatic. He has an awful lot of leverage. His agent was smart and did what a lot of agents are doing now...backloaded his contract so that all his bonuses hit the cap in his last year. His franchise number next year would be close to $16 million. His 5 year tag number would be over $110 million.

It's the same tactic that got Mario Williams $100 mil and Calvin Johnson $130 mil. A lot depends, of course, on how well Long does this season. But if he stays healthy and continues to get better, 12-15 sacks isn't out of the question.
