Wouldn't mind if the Pirates drafted Barrett Barnes here with their comp pick.

Light's stuff sounds interesting, but it seems like the consensus is that he could have been had at a much lower spot. Seems like Cherington isn't as hot on signability guys.

The Athletics have been loading up on power bats in recent years. Clearly trying to flood the system and hope one emerges.

That Nats would be the ones to take the risk on Giolito. Got a steal in Purke last year, might be getting another one this year.

Purke hasn't been very good. Velocity is down. Hasn't been healthy.

Yeah, he was a first round talent when healthy, though. Hopefully he pans out.

I didn't see, but I assume Harold Reynolds or one of the analysts thinking it was about OBP again.

Barnum is an upside guy. I'm guessing Adam Dunn is his comparison, plenty of power, not much else. I am psyched about the Hawkins pick, he has all of the stuff, works hard and he loves the game. Let's just hope we can sign him.

Yeah pretty much this. They were all having a circle jerk because Oakland took HS players and how that is so different than the concept of Moneyball.

I hope the Pirates sign Adam Brett Walker in the third if he's there. That'd be a nice boost to the power in our system if drafted and signed.

Haha. I needed that after seeing the Indians take my boy, Mitchell Brown. I was surprised the Twins weren't taking him, but then I read that he had a bad outing when Terry Ryan was in attendance.
I was really surprised Walker was there, though. I thought he might go in the sandwich round, but would likely go somewhere fairly early in the 2nd. Great power, but not a whole lot else, but his power is about as good as it gets.

Any info on Jamie Callahan? All I know is that he's 17 and throws 94. Actually, scratch that, this is what I know.
Quote:
With the 87th overall pick in the draft, the Red Sox have selected Jamie Callahan, a right-handed pitcher from Dillon High School in Hamer, South Carolina.
Callahan, 17, was recently named the Gatorade South Carolina High School Player of the Year. Committed to the University of South Carolina next fall, Callahan went 7-1 with a 0.89 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 50.0 innings pitched as he led the Dillon Wildcats deep into the playoffs this season. The 6'2" 195 pound right-hander's fastball sits 88-92 and can occasionally reach the mid 90's. He throws a 12-6 curveball as well as a slider and changeup that are works in progress.
Baseball America's 144th ranked prospect leading into the draft, Callahan also hit .439 with 5 home runs and 32 RBI this season. A hard worked both in the classroom (3.9 GPA) and on the field, Callahan does not turn 18 until August.
|
Sounds a little bit better than our previous few selections. Nice that we finally take an upside guy.
EDIT:
Jesus, Toronto is loading up. No way they sign all these guys.
