Yes but his rival actually had two twin brothers. One who died and one who was Bruce Wayne. When Bruce Wayne abandoned his identical twin brothers, the one who survived snapped when his partner and brother died. He then created an alter-ego to destroy his other twin brother Bruce Wayne. This alter-ego was called The Joker.

But you see, The Joker was just going back to prove that Bruce Wayne/his twin brother killed his partner. They both knew of his guilt, but the fact that he was an established writer and he knew he killed his partner on purpose, just leads back to their ever lasting rivalry even in old age. That is, until Bruce brings Hilary Swank around for some reason.

Ooooooooh ok. How did I not get that. So that explains why Alfred saw Bruce at the end. Thank you for clearing that up.

I'm really not kidding, sorry if I look like I am a spammer because that was my first post. I'm usually just a reader, but this thread seemed to have a serious following and I really wanted to know the answer to that question so I figured i'd join just to ask it...
Does anyone have an answer?

He was definitely alive at the end, they hinted at him wanting to live that life and everything leading up to it (plus clues for everyone).

I think he is still alive. I think he ejected right after he shot that building and it made a huge explosion.

Why are people having a hard time believing Bruce is alive? This seems to be a huge mystery all over the internet. Who else rebuilt the bat signal after Batman's disappearance?

Thanks for the responses. I don't know, it just seemed like the scene felt like more of Alfred's imagination than actual reality.. Maybe it was just the lighting and the way it was shot. I wonder if Christopher Nolan will give a definitive answer the next time he does an interview. Also, would that mean that Christian Bale won't be Batman if there is a Justice League film gets the green light?

Now that is an interesting thought, because with the magnitude of the moment the audience probably isn't thinking about that, even though that part where he shot one of the buildings made no sense. Touche.

I think this world of Batman is done with. No more Nolan, Bale, Caine, Freeman, etc.
As for Justice League, I think that's a pipe dream. DC needs to worry about Man of Steel not being another flop first.

Actually nevermind, just watched that scene online on a bootleg version and after that explosion it cuts to a shot of Batman still in the cockpit of the "BAT." Now, that could be just a shot/editing error, but I doubt it.

Yeah, and it probably would make the most sense. After the ending of this film it just wouldn't make sense for it to be Bale if there is a Justice League movie.
In the Marvel Universe all of the stories tie in pretty well, especially Ironman, where the DC films are a lot more independent. We'll see how the Ironman trilogy ends because there are suppose to be two more avengers films after Ironman 3 so they can't have a similar type ending to the Batman films I would assume.

The scene where Fox learns that the autopilot was fixed should indicate everything. It was not included for no reason. Fixing the autopilot in itself is relatively meaningless. If it wasn't used by Batman, it basically is a random fact placed at the very end of the movie.
Consider the other characters' ending scenes. Blake becomes the new Batman. Alfred sees his dream for Bruce. These a both huge, powerful scenes. Are we really supposed to think that Fox's ending scene is nothing more than him learning a random fact of little importance? No. Clearly Fox's scene was supposed to indicate more than just the fact that it had been fixed. Nolan made us aware that the autopilot was fixed because this fix actually came into use, i.e. Batman not dying in the nuclear explosion. And when viewed along that light, it fits in with the importance of the ending scenes for Blake and Alfred.

Precisely. The Marvel universe for years has tied together (since it was made that way in the first place) whereas the DC universe is kind of forcing it's combination of heroes. Joss Weadon even said himself that making a JLA film would be a lot more difficult with it's characters. And really, do we even need a JLA film? Yes it would be cool to see these characters together on the big screen if it's done well, but I'd be perfectly content with just really good independent films. Or how about start with just a Batman/Superman film? It's funny because before the breakout success at the box office of The Avengers, the rumors of a JLA film were non existent.

I wonder if this was actually Hathaway in this scene.

solid movie. though i'd love it if just once, some director didn't have a guy meaninglessly drop and then have to fumble for the macguffin.

There is a few subtle clues that strongly indicate he survived. Each character Fox, Blake, Gordon etc is given something at the end that indicates he is alive as several people have mentioned - ie the bat light, auto pilot etc. It's a nice little thought that Alfred was imagining it, but there is little support that it was imagined.
Now if Alfred had looked up and then the screen faded to black or whatever, then we'd be having more of a discussion about what he actually saw. Fortunately Nolan didn't 'Inception' us again.

I just want to say that the moment where Gordon finds out his identity is just awesome and very rewarding. He is the last main character to know it and it happens only at the last time he'll ever speak to him, thinking he is about to die. But the realization is just great, I adored it.

Saw it again. Liked it better the second time around. Bane is awesome.
Also, any time someone got up, I couldn't help but stare them down until I was sure they weren't heading for the emergency exit door.

Here is a big plot hole. When they are checking over the "bat" the tech guys say auto pilot was installed in a update 6 months ago. WTF he was in a prison somewhere for what seemed like a year or so.
