With the new rule, you can designate one player who is on your 53 man roster to come off IR after 6 weeks. There will be a 3 week window to activate him, similar to the PUP list, and if you don't, he goes out for the season.

That's because most of the players it happens to wouldn't have made the roster anyway. It's very common and rarely if ever do the players that were stashed turn out to be anything, so it's no harm no foul.

The raiders apparently are announcing their roster moves hours after the deadline in honor of Al Davis. I seriously hate being a raider fan sometimes.

It's because you're not supposed to do it, but it's not technically against the rules. The NFL just doesn't want teams stashing healthy players on IR when they could land jobs with other teams.
But every year, a few guys who showed no signs of major injury will end up on IR at the time of final cuts. Demps is just a prime example of it. He was cleared yesterday I believe and now is suddenly on IR.

Seahawks are in:
Quote:
The team also said goodbye to wide receiver Deon Butler and quarterback Josh Portis. Butler, a 2009 third-round pick, had 57 catches over three seasons with Seattle, but just six in five games last season and got forced out of a receiving corps that features Braylon Edwards. Portis was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2011 after a college career that saw him play for three different schools. His release means that Russell Wilson and Matt Flynn are the only quarterbacks currently on the roster.
James Carpenter, a 2011 first-round pick, made the active roster despite spending all of training camp on the PUP list. Coach Pete Carroll said earlier this week that he expected Carpenter to play this season after some doubt earlier in the summer. Carpenter tore his ACL last year and is expected to move from tackle to guard this season.
The Seahawks also announced that they have waived defensive back Phillip Adams, defensive end Pierre Allen, linebacker Allen Bradford, guard Paul Fanaika, guard Rishaw Johnson, wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, linebacker Kyle Knox, wide receiver Ricardo Lockette, tight end Sean McGrath, center Kris O’Dowd, defensive back DeShawn Shead, linebacker Korey Toomer and wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei. Linebacker Matt McCoy was placed on injured reserve and tight end Cooper Helfet and running back Vai Taua were waived-injured.
Cornerback Walter Thurmond, who broke his leg last season, will start the year on the PUP list. Guard Allen Barbre is serving a four-game suspension to start the season.

So if he goes to IR is he still allowed to train with the team?

Victor Cruz went to IR in 2010 because we wanted to stash him. He actually had an injury but it wasn't anything that would really keep him out the full year.

The only thing you can't do is practice. You can still work out, go to meetings, travel, etc.

Yes 100% positive. He was never placed on the 53.

It was reported that neither he nor Shaun Rogers got that designation. It could still go to Marvin Austin though.

It will not. Austin will be able to go before then. You don't lose the designation though.

I'm still so glad we ended up with Paea instead of Austin...thanks for that. I just didn't see it with him. All hype. They're both hurt right now, so who knows what will happen, but I still feel good about that choice.

I agree. Austin hasn't played a down in over 2 years. Who knows what we have.

That strikes me as...optimistic.

Somewhat surprised to see the Seahawks going with 2 QBs. Sucks to see Lockette go, he showed so much promise last year. Also nice to see Carpenter activated from PUP.

49ers only kept 2 OT's and 3 OLB's.
Could prove interesting.

I'm completely shocked at the release of Parrish after last nights dazzling performance.

It probably just means that they aren't set with their 53 man roster.

Yeah, it's important to remember that a lot of roster anomalies will be cleared up as teams scour the cuts from the rest of the league.
So the 53 guys your team has on the roster right now probably won't be the exact same 53 that are there on opening day.
