Default Tebow refused to play in wildcat package

Quote:
Citing multiple team sources, ESPN New York reports Tim Tebow pulled himself out of the Jets' Wildcat package after he was passed over for Greg McElroy in the starting lineup last week.

Tebow has every right to be frustrated about the Jets' refusal to use him as a quarterback, but sabotaging one of the team's offensive packages was probably not the right way to go about it. Tebow was active for Sunday's loss to the Chargers, but did not play. Jeremy Kerley stood in as the Jets' Wildcat QB. We'd say the Jets have become a three-ring circus, but that would be generous. Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum are leading the no-ring circus.

If he wasn't a media darling:

Tebow is an absolute cancer the Jets need to rid themselves of. He isn't talented enough to press for the starting job and the media attention he brings is a distraction to the Jets franchise. Look for him to be released or traded in the offseason.

Instead we get that he has "every right" to pout and act like a cancer, granted one of the least cancerous players on the Jets, and the media won't turn on him. Imagine the NY media if this were Sanchez rather than Jesus Christ. I don't even like Sanchez but there is no way in hell they would handle it with kid gloves.

The difference between Tebow and Sanchez, though, is that Sanchez had his shot to prove he can be the QB of the future. He had pretty much four full seasons and finished with 55% completions, more interceptions than touchdowns, and multiple games lost every season because of his turnovers.

Tebow was (most likely) told that he would have a chance to start if Mark Sanchez failed to perform. Tebow feels like he did enough last year to at least earn a chance to start again, and he is correct in feeling that. He was a second year player that took over a 1-4 team and went on to throw twice as many touchdowns as interceptions, make the playoffs, and win a playoff game.

I have to problem with him refusing to play in Wildcat formations for the last two games of the season on a team that clearly will be getting rid of him in the offseason. Why risk getting hurt for a team that lied to you when they signed you and is obviously going to cut you in a couple of weeks?

I don't even think Tebow is a good QB, and I have no idea if he can someday become one. But he did enough in his limited action to earn at least a start over Mark Sanchez after his four mediocre, being generous with that, seasons.

It's a tough spot for everyone involved, including the Jets' coaches. Seems like Tebow was forced on them and when they saw him practice they had no idea how they'd use him. One more reason Mike Tannenbaum needs to be fired, although unfortunately you can't fire the owner too. I'm sure Woody Johnson had his hands in this.

Obviously he didn't do enough to earn more playing time. Heck he had to be pretty bad considering some of his teammates made fun of him anonymously. I do agree that the Jets should of never promised him he would have a chance of start if it wasn't genuine. I can't exactly fault the Jets for demoting him either. He obviously wasn't showing much of anything in practice or he would of replaced the Sanchize a while ago. My issue is Tebow shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt. The media is super quick to crucify, ha, in this situation but because it is the second coming they put on the kid gloves for him.

Situation is terrible but for Mister "I'll do anything for the team" to abandon his team because he was passed over is hilarious.

As cliche as it is, some players just can't perform their best in practice. I will take what happens in actual games over what happens in practice every single time.

I don't consider Tebow to be a part of the Jets at this point, and I am sure the Jets organization and Tebow feel the same way. He is on the roster but he isn't part of the team. The coaches and front office lie to him and the other players mock him behind his back. He has put up with this for almost four months without saying a word against them. If he finally wants to take a stand by refusing to play the last two games I don't see the problem.

I like how they titled that "Tim Tebow opted out of Wildcat" as if he was given a choice. "Hey guys, I know someone of you don't enjoy running certain plays, but what aspects of this offense do you not feel like doing? I wouldn't want you to feel bad about being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars."

The Jets should never have extended Sanchez or traded for Tebow. This isn't hindsight, everyone knew this would end badly. The Jets are a horribly managed and coached team, they did this to themselves, and its gonna be hilarious when the Jags make the same mistake with Gabbert and Tebow.

In the postgame news conference, Tebow was asked who told him he wouldn't be playing in the Wildcat and Tebow responded, "It just kind of happens."

Ryan said during his news conference that they wanted to use Kerley because of the element of surprise. Afterward Ryan, through a team spokesman, said it was a "coach's decision" when asked specifically if Tebow had opted out.

"I also wanted to give Kerley a shot at running some Wildcat things," Ryan said. "We knew they wouldn't expect him to throw the ball, and that was the case."

No he does not. Handed to him? All you hear about is his work ethic and dedication. When he calls the Jets out for not following through on a promise, I think what he did was completely warranted. He went to NY for an opportunity to start, and he wasnt given that although everything else fell into place (Sanchez failing, out of the playoff race).

Its all a mess in Jets no matter who is the QB there. Tebow got hosed and should of at least be the starer instead of McElroy . Sorry for those who don't think so but he does. Tebow was at least told he could start when Sanchez failed and people said already before. I agree with him. He doesn't wanna run the wild cat any . He wants to improve as a passer not be a gimmick QB. I believe he has the right to be picky since the Jets destroyed his season of any chance at starting and screwed him for a year development at all so it is going to set him back another year. Shame on the Jets and the GM there.

Jets are horrible and a joke. Owner needs to fire everyone and get a new coaching staff along with a new QB for starters.

Tebow signed with the Jets to be a quarterback, not a gadget guy. He agreed to run the wildcat assuming if Sanchez fell on his face he'd get a chance to start.

What I don't understand is the Jets coaching staff felt that Tebow wasn't worth starting ONE GAME for the Jets.smh
Tebow may not be a pro bowl QB, but he's not the worst QB in the league, which is exactly how the Jets treated him.

Also I don't believe for a minute McElroy outplayed Tebow and 'earned' his starting gig. People act like Tebow is incapable of completing a pass in the NFL.

Ryan treated Tebow like he had zombie cooties. He wouldn't use him in any major capacity on offense. IMO when an organization lies to you, that's when your professional obligation to them ends.

That's why you don't make promises to players, other than you'll give them a chance to come to your organization and compete for a starting gig.

Tebow is only 25 years old.
If I were him, I go to the CFL for a couple seasons and try to find a team that will give him reps as a starter. Tebow needs reps in a pro passing offense somewhere where's he's not under the microscope. He would have been a perfect candidate for NFL Europe.

You can't learn to diagnose coverages and understand how to read progressions standing on the sideline.
Go to Canada, try to win a Grey Cup, then come back to the NFL.

Do a Jimi Hendrix, Timmy. Establish your star power in another league, then come back and let the league 'rediscover' you.

For some reason Tebow is getting blackballed by the NFL, and I don't think his deficiencies are that bad to the point he can't improve with coaching and more playing time.

Yeah but I don't think management told him he's a lock to be a starter....Tebow had to go and earn it. Too bad if he doesn't do well in practice, what the hell kind of a message does that send to the team.

"Hey if you half ass it in practice or don't excel in practice....You'll be a starter on our team! Sorry to the guys who are doing great in practice!"

McElroy was never expected to do anything this year(Outside of Peter King who called it), he was an after thought but he worked his tail off and supported Sanchez and Tebow....why does Tebow throw a hissy fit now when McElroy's hard work and dream finally come true? Pure ***** move.

Tebow is a paid professional, and is signed to a contract....Tebow cannot go and do something like this and not expect to be crucified. If we're using this logic, why should the Jets pay Tebow his few million if he hardly did anything worth note for the team? Its because he's signed to a contract and like it or not, they are obligated to pay him....much like Tebow is obligated to do whatever is asked of him by the Jets.

Its pretty sad people actually applaud Tebow for being defiant and refusing to do what was asked by his coach.

I'm giving Tebow the benefit of the doubt because I find it hard to believe Ryan told Tebow to go into the game and run wildcat and he said, '**** you.'

What I don't understand is the Jets coaching staff felt that Tebow wasn't worth starting ONE GAME for the Jets.smh agreed
Tebow may not be a pro bowl QB, but he's not the worst QB in the league, which is exactly how the Jets treated him. worst QB? maybe not. Worst passer? absolutely, no contest hes the worst passer in the league. Sanchez is no gem either though, brutally inaccurate.

Also I don't believe for a minute McElroy outplayed Tebow and 'earned' his starting gig. People act like Tebow is incapable of completing a pass in the NFL. Hes capable of completing one. can he complete a string of them consistently? the coaches are actually at practice. if they say hes a no go, then its safe to assume these proffessional coaches who are seeing him daily know more than you or I.

Ryan treated Tebow like he had zombie cooties. He wouldn't use him in any major capacity on offense. IMO when an organization lies to you, that's when your professional obligation to them ends. I dont like Tebows call to sit. they just treated him like crap, his teammates took anonymous shots at him earlier in the year, his coaches have refused him oppurtunities despite the glaring fact that sanchez is atrocious. it wasnt the best team player moment from him but his teammates and now coaches have dumped on him, so i can see where hes coming from anyway.

For some reason Tebow is getting blackballed by the NFL, (are you sure its not because hes just not very good?) and I don't think his deficiencies are that bad to the point he can't improve with coaching and more playing time.
Tebow needs a lot to succeed, namely someone willing to be creative and take an enormous chance by using him in an unconventional offense and commiting to that by getting mobile backups and the like. even then, idk if he can because his passing really is brutal.

People are so eager to attack him. Hissy fit? What? No one said that. They said he asked not to be part of the Wildcat, presumably because all along the Wildcat was supposed to be a way to get him into the game, not because it's an effective part of the Jet's offense. McElroy's not among the greatest college QBs ever. He didn't lead a team to the playoffs, win a game, and then get traded away. People act like Tebow's got no resume. The ****? He sure as hell does. Sanchez, who is definitely one of the worst QBs in the league, gets benched, and the coaching staff who said they wanted Tebow at the beginning of the season are starting a pure scrub over him. Forget why people talk about Tebow, if you were an athlete of Tebow's caliber and history trying to make it as a quarterback in the NFL, starting McElroy is nothing short of a direct insult to you. I'm agreeing with FUNBUNCHER on this. I think everyone and their grandmother thought Tebow would get a shot at QB is Sanchez faltered, and the fact that such a high-profile player doesn't get a look when the team's out of the playoffs means the team has no interest in playing him. All Tebow's doing is saying, "Fine," And all the haters come out of the woodwork. Anything less than perfect is fodder. If an employer hired me telling me I'd be doing one thing, had me doing dirty work while I waited my turn, and then when my turn came gave the opportunity to someone else, I'd be pissed, too. Everyone knows Tebow's not a practice superstar. The Jets insulted him by starting McElroy. Plain and simple.

Exactly. Substitute Tebow for say Larry Johnson and the story changes completely. Complain about schemes, playing time, etc the media will crush you and call you immature and a poor teammate. Tebow does the same by snubbing the gameplan (wildcat) and being an unsupportive douche to his teammate when he was passing over and he's cheered?

where did the jets say they'd let him play if sanchez sucked? Tebow was brought in and the Jets explicitly said Sanchez was their guy. Tebow was TRADED FOR to be the backup and gadget guy. Oh, his feelings were hurt because the Jets wanted to see if McElroy had any place in the future for the NFL? You mean they were making a business decision and it hurt tim's feelings? Boo-hoo.

I'm not saying Tebow should've begged out of the Wildcat, but the people who act like it's a license to pile on need a serious dose of perspective.
