Default SmashNDash's First Mock of the Year

Hey guys Iím back with the first mock of the 2013 draft season. If Iím off base on analysis or picks of any team please donít hesitate to let me know.

1) Kansas City- Geno Smith QB West Virginia
The argument for Luke Joeckel here will be made, but in the end I think the Chiefs will retain Brandon Albert. Their biggest need is at QB and Geno Smith is the top signal caller at this point. Does he need some work? Sure, but he has the perfect coach to help speed up his development in Andy Reid.

2) Jacksonville- Star Lotulelei DT Utah
The Jags need an impact player on defense and Star helps this defense out two-fold. He is dominant against the run and provides an explosive push inside in pass rushing situations. He will command double teams which will free up more oppurtunities for the underwhelming Jeremy Mincy and the still raw Andre Branch to make more of an impact.

3) Oakland- Damontre Moore DE/OLB Texas A&M
The Raiders have needs on all 3 levels of their defense so it is imperative they get an impact player here. Damontre Moore is the top pass rusher right now until we know the full extent of Jarvis Jones medical issues.

4) Philadelphia- Luke Joeckel LT Texas A&M
As much as I would love to mock a defensive player here like Dee Milner or Dion Jordan, Luke is too good to pass up here. The anchor along the Texas A&M line kept Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel clean all year. He becomes the instant anchor for a young eagles team for years to come. If Chip Kelly determines Jason Peters is healthy enough to come back at the same high level as before though, look for a 3-4 pass rusher or corner.

5) Detroit- Bjoern Werner DE Florida St
The Lions inabillity to cover in the secondary is well documented and Dee Milliner would certainly be understandable for them here. The Lions have another need that is just as pressing and that is their pass rush. Vaden Bosch will be gone and Cliff Avril hasnít shown he is worth the big money heís asking for.

6) Cleveland- Jarvis Jones DE/OLB Georgia
Where Jarvis Jones will end up being drafted is one of the biggest questions heading into the combine. He has the talent to be the first pass rusher off the board. His medical issues are the biggest question. A very serious spinal condition has teams concerend about the long term future of his career. If everything checks out, the Browns are a great fit as their defenisve line is one dominant pass rusher away from being one of the premier lines in the NFL.

7) Arizona- Eric Fisher LT Central Michigan
Arizona has holes to fill all across their offensive line and at QB. They can effectively solve two problems with the selection of Eric Fisher. He can become the franchise LT for years to come and it allows them to move Levi Brown to RT where he can be more of a factor in run blocking.

8) Buffalo- Mike Glennon QB NC State
The Bills could go a number of directions with this pick, but they have to find their replacement for Ryan Fitzpatrick. It comes down to Glennon/Barkley and right now I think Glennon has the more appealing skill set to teams right now.

9) New York Jets- Dion Jordan DE/OLB Oregon
Where do we begin with the Jets? So many holes to fill with so little picks to do so. Ultimately I think its time the Jets address their lackluster pass rush that has haunted them over the last two seasons. Dion Jordan is as athletically gifted as any prospect in this draft and he has the potential to really shine at the combine.

10) Tennessee- Chance Warmack G Alabama
Rarely do interior offensive lineman go this high, but Chance is a special talent. An absloute bulldozer in run blocking and is still developing in pass protection. The Titans desperately need to upgrade their offensive line to make more running lanes for Chris Johnson.

11) San Diego- Lane Johnson LT Oklahoma
Unfortunately for the Chargers Eric Fisher had to blow up the Senior Bowl so he will be long gone by the time its their turn to pick. That being said, Lane Johnson had an impressive showing there as well and is absolutely a first round pick now. While this might be a little early for him, he has the luxury of having nobody behind him really seperating themselves as a 1st round pick at LT. That ultimately pushes him up the board.

12) Miami- Cordarrelle Patterson WR Tennessee
Cordarrelle Patterson might need some time to develop and improve his route running, but this kidís potential is too much to pass up on. His rare combination of size and speed will have teams drooling at the thought of drafting him. His 40 time at the combine may be the most anticpated measurables going into the combine.

13) Tampa Bay- Dee Milliner CB Alabama
Itís a perfect situation for the Bucs as the best player on the board fills their biggest need. Dee Milliner is the best corner in the draft, but I think he will fall out of the top 10 due to the rise in stock of multiple DEs and LTs. The Bucs corner situation is dire to say the least. Ronde Barber is likely done, Aquib Talib was traded to the Patriots and Eric Wright will likely be let go.

14) Carolina- Kenny Vaccaro S Texas
Iím bucking the trend of the usual ďDT to CarolinaĒ trend that happens in mock drafts every year. Now I know itís their biggest need, but Carolina canít afford to reach in this draft. DTs tend to take half to a full season to make an impact for teams. Ron Rivera needs to draft day 1 impact starters that he can count on right away. Kenny Vaccaro is the top safety in this class and can start day 1 in a Panthers secondary that was an absolute joke in 2012.

15) New Orleans- Barkevious Mingo DE/OLB LSU
The Saints will run a 3-4 defense in 2013 and need to draft someone who can get to the QB. Mingo has the local ties playing for LSU and fits perfectly with what the Saints want to do on defense.

16) St. Louis- Keenan Allen WR Cal
Itís about time the Rams give Sam Bradford a true #1 WR to work with. Keenan Allen has size and is dangerous with the ball in his hands. Allen will ultimately take pressure off of Danny Amendola who has developed into one of the best slot WRs in the game.

17) Pittsburgh- John Jenkins NT Georgia
The Steelers have multiple needs on both sides of the ball. I wanted to go with a pass rusher here, but the way my board falls they are forced to go elsewhere. Casey Hampton is getting older and Taíamu has disappointed so far. John Jenkins is a massive body that commands double teams. A solid run stuffer who offers an occasional push in pass rushing situations, I think he offers a fresh boost to a talented, but aging defense.

18) Dallas- Sheldon Richardson DT Missouri
With the decline of Jay Ratliff, the Cowboys have a need for fresh blood up front. Sheldon Richardson had a big year causing fits for offensive lines in the SEC in 2012. He could become the anchor for the Cowboys D for a long time, as long as the Cowboys keep him out of trouble.

19) New York Giants- Ezekiel Ansah DE BYU
Another DE for the Giants? Believe it. The Giants defensive line took a step back last year collectively as age has become a glaring problem for them. Justin Tuck looks tired and Osi is another year older as well. JPP saw a dip in sacks, but had to deal with teams scheming against him. Ezekiel Ansah is an athletic freak that closely resembles JPP. Look for his stock to rise after the combine as well.

20) Chicago- Manti Te'o MLB Notre Dame
I was torn between Manti Teío and Jonathan Cooper for da Bears, but I decided to go with Teío. Brian Urlacher is 35 and has been decimated by injuries. Manti has the ND/Chicago connection here and it would allow the Bears to get younger at the position. Mantiís stock has slightly fallen because of the performance in the national championship game, but does present value the later he falls. Look for the Bears to go offensive line if they decided to keep Urlacher.

21) Cincinnati- Alec Ogletree OLB Georgia
The Bengals have a nice blend of youth and experience on all levels of their defense. They play fast and are very athletic. Alec Ogletree has the speed to move sideline to sideline and fits perfectly next to Vontaze Burfict. He slightly resembles Thomas Davis of the Carolina Panthers.

22) St. Louis (Was)- Jonathan Cooper G UNC
The Rams have the luxury of picking twice in the first round and they fill a big need with this pick. Their offensive line has been a liability and in need of immediate upgrades. Jonathan Cooper is the 2nd best guard in this draft and presents great value to the Rams here at pick #22.

23) Minnesota- Jonathan Hankins DT Ohio State
Jared Allen is still getting it done for the Vikings, but the interior of their defensive line needs to be addressed. Hankins is a big body that can be very disruptive against the run. He needs to become more consistent at the next level, but he should have plenty of time to fix that playing next to Jared Allen.

24) Indianapolis- Jesse Williams DT Alabama
With Jonathan Cooper off the board here I have the Colts going defense. The need for a true NT for their 3-4 should take precedence over other needs here and Williams fits the bill.

25) Seattle- Khaseem Greene OLB Rutgers
Pete Carroll has not tried to hide his desire to upgrade the DT position this offseason. Fortunately for him there will be plenty of them for him to grab in the 2nd round. The Seahawks could use another young linebacker to pair with Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright. Khaseem Greene is great in coverage and fits what Seattle is looking for in filling out the rest of their front seven.

26) Green Bay- Tyler Eifert TE Notre Dame
The Packers should be addressing defense with every chance they get, the fact that Jermichael Finley will likely be cut or traded leaves a big hole to fill on offense. Tyler Eifert combines a big frame with great athleticism at the TE position that will create matchup nightmares for Aaron Rodgers to exploit all day.

27) Houston- Kevin Minter MLB LSU
The Texans defense suffered after Cushing went down this year. Kevin Minter is another physically imposing player at the linebacker position that could be a great compliment for Cushing coming off of his injury.

28) Denver- Jonathan Banks CB Miss St
The Broncos secondary is in need of an upgrade. Champ Bailey is another year older and Tracy Porter health has to be a concern. Banks is arguably the 2nd best corner in the draft and is an instant starter for Denver going into next season.

29) New England- Tavon Austin WR West Virginia
The Patriots will once again have to answer questions about Wes Welkerís future with the team. Their hesitance to give him a long term deal tells me they might be ready to move on if negotiations stall again. Tavon Austin was arguably the most dangerous all purpose WR in college football this year. He is the perfect replacement for Welker and Brady should have fun finding various ways to get him the ball in space.

30) Atlanta- Zach Ertz TE Stanford
I was very tempted to go with a pass rusher here, but Tony Gonzalez has finally decided to call it a career. His role in the Falcons offense was invaluable as he continued to be a threat for teams to game plan against. Zach Ertz is one of the top two TEs in the 2013 draft and could go ahead of Eifert.

31) Baltimore- Matt Elam S Florida
The Ravens will have holes to fill with the retirement of Ray Lewis and the strong possibility of losing Ed Reed as well. Matt Elam is athletic enough to make plays all over the field. His play in coverage needs improvement, but he is a very competent replacement for Ed Reed.

32) San Francisco- Shariff Floyd DT Florida
As much of a beast as Justin Smith is, he needs help. Floyd plays with great power and is disruptive in the backfield. He is still raw, needing more time to develop, but playing next to one of the most disruptive players in all of football should help him out immensely.

While both OG and WR are up there in need for the Rams, the chances the Rams take both positions in the first is highly unlikely. In 18 drafts as a head coach Fisher has taken a combined total of 2 WRs and OL (and both were WR, Dyson & Britt almost more than a decade apart) On the other hand, Fisher has shown a ridiculous tendency to target DBs and DL in the first round, I think a S or a DT is a lot more likely as one of the two picks, whether it's Vacarro or Elam at S or even the DT Short from Purdue. Also wouldn't hate one of the two TE's in Ertz or Eifert to compliment Kendricks and the offense.

Yea I know Rams fans believe at least one of these picks will be a defensive player and I definitely agree. I just wasn't sure if mocking another DT after taking Brockers last year was a justifiable move. Ill remember this going forward. Thanks man.

Levi Brown would most likely either be cut or moved to RG with the emergence of Bobby Massie late last year

Fisher Colledge Sendlein Brown Massie is semi solid though

Like the pick. And not only is Hampton getting older, he very likely won't be on the team.

I don't feel like NT is needed enough to burn a first rounder on. Xavier Rhodes would be a good pick here for the Colts.
