Josh Portis has been waived. Maybe Jerrod Johnson can take Wilson's job...

I know I'm in the minority, but I never thought Urlacher was as good as advertised. He'll make the HOF though.

Great player. Great career. HOF worthy? Probably. I think the Bears not having that many great seasons during his tenure helped hurt his shine over the years.

He led a franchise known for great linebackers in career tackles. He is in the HOF. Also just saw on Twitter, he is 1 of 4 players to have 20 Interceptions and 40 sacks in their career.

You are definitely in the minority. He's one of 4 players to have 40 career sacks and 20 INTs. A great playmaker and an even better leader. He's a first ballot guy without a doubt.

I'd be shocked if Urlacher didn't get in first ballot.

I can't get the 06 SB out of my head, where Jeff Saturday basically ate his lunch. He got abused that day. Jerome Bettis trucking him also stands out to me.

I remember him as a great, dominant coverage MIKE, but he had his issues vs the run.

He's still a HOF player, but he's viewed as the 2nd best LB of his generation behind Ray Lewis, and I'm not ready to say that. I think the fact that he played for the Bears elevated his status in the public's eye as well, bc of their history at LB.

Urlacher was great but I don't see first ballot worthy.

I don't think he is a first ballot type guy. If you look at the guys who have made it in right away, typically he is nowhere near as good as they were.

Some people think Derrick Brooks isn't a first ballot guy. If Brooks isn't first ballot, Urlacher shouldn't be either.

I think Brooks was better than Urlacher.

Urlacher very likely won't be a first ballot guy, but that's really not that big of a deal anyway. He will get in, however.

Other than Ray Lewis, who is the last linebacker to be the face of a franchise for 10+ years? LT?

It's an apples/oranges comparison. It's like saying Ronnie Lott was better than Darrell Green or something.

I understand that. My point was I think Brooks was more impactful at his position than Urlacher was at his, and if Brooks isn't first ballot as a LB who doesn't rush the passer than Urlacher shouldn't be either. That's all.

Urlacher is going to the Hall, and he probably belongs there. I just don't view him as a first ballot guy, that's all.

It's also nice to see the NFL getting smarter, frankly. Urlacher was done, and there wasn't a team out there to give him a last hurrah, which is traditionally how it would always go (Jerry Rice on the Seahawks, Emmit Smith on the Cardinals, LT on the Jets, Bruce Smith on the Redskins, Deion Sanders on the Redskins, Everyone else on the Redskins....) The NFL almost locked Charles Woodson out as well, had the Raiders not been the Raiders.

I think his position had a lot to do with it too. Freeney, Harrison, eventually John Abraham all got/will get another chance bc they're pass rushers.

Woodson is still a DB which is why he got a chance. When you're done as a LB, your market is awfully thin.

Urlacher never struck me as a 1st ballot guy and the presence of Ray Lewis on the 2018 ballot will also hurt his chances, but he's a cert for Canton soon after. He finishes his career with 8 Pro Bowls, 4 1st team All Pros, 1 second team All Pro, a DPOTY award in 2005 and a first team selection for the 2000s All Decade Team with Derrick Brooks and Ray Lewis.

When it comes to LBs and the HOF, Kevin Greene has been a finalist but can't break into the Top 10. Derrick Brooks next year and Junior Seau a year later should be 1st ballot, 2nd at the very latest. Lewis is a slam dunk for 2018 and Urlacher probably makes it a year later.

Will Randy Moss be the next to retire?

There it is. Classic case of offering up a nobody as a sacrificial lamb when other guys have been guilty of the same thing or in some cases much worse. I'd rather give a guy a pass to a guy for downing an extra beer or two as opposed to smacking the wife around, again and again.

Before the draft, some people around here were dumping all over the Bears for not giving Urlacher the contract he wanted. They were accused of disrespecting the face of the franchise, etc. People said the market for him would be robust after the draft. The only other teams rumored to have interest...DEN and MIN...publicly denied wanting him. He got one contract offer and went to the press to badmouth the team that offered it.

He ended up having to retire because he burned the only bridge available to him. Yes, he'll get into the hall of fame...but he's still someone who had no problem actively hurting his team out of spite. This is the guy who intentionally injured a top five pick in practice after his rookie year because he liked the veteran at the position better. So...it's an unpopular thing to say, but Brian Urlacher is kind of a piece of trash as a person.

I've been a fan for too many decades to see players the way you young folks do. Urlacher does deserve to get into the hall of fame, but not before a lot of the guys who are still waiting. In truth, he wouldn't even be a backup if you made an all-time all-Bears team.

As far as good guys and team-first players go, he was certainly never a Doug Buffone / Mike Brown / Charles Tillman / Walter Payton type who make you smile just to think of them. He was more a douche who had no problem ******** on both the fanbase and teammates he didn't like.

Urlacher is a HOF but probably 3rd or 4th ballot.
