Depends on the job and how comfortable you are doing things. One thing that was always done in my family home is that we would put up the wallboard, but get a contractor to tape, because that's when things can be messed up.
Putting in hardwood floors are not difficult as long as you rent the right tools.
You can do your own electric if it is a small list of things. If you want to wire an entire room, grab an electrician.
Outdoor decks and stuff of that nature can be done on your own. Basically anything with wood can be done without a contractor.
You have to be more specific in what you actually want to do and if you should hire a guy to do it.
