Default Intergalactic Superbowl Squad

So Aliens have returned and challenged us to 1 game of football to determine the earths fate. We have 18 months for the players to practice together and master a system, we can use any players we want and the aliens have even given us technology which will keep our players in their current physical condition so we don't have to worry about anybody falling apart over the next year and a half.

Who do we pick to win this biggest of games? Paul Maurice will obviously be the head coach since he's the only man who's coached against the aliens before and won, but who's on the roster, who's coaching each side of the ball, what system are we using? There is much to discuss and decide upon before the final 54 is settled.

I want Buddy Ryan coaching defense, the 46 defense of the 1985 Bearz.

Falling Skies coming back in a few weeks so nice thread, timely.

If the aliens have the technology to stop aging and reach us from their planet, I don't think it matters who we pick. The Earth is pretty damn ****** in this scenario.

I'll humor you Rosebud only because I like you.

I would need more time for 54 man roster so for now - I'll go HC,DC,OC, ST for coaches and just the starters. I'm going off the assumption that we are going best of best in NFL so head coaches can fill all the coaching spots.

Head Coach - Bill Belichick
Offensive Coordinator - Sean Payton
Defensive Coordinator - Rex Ryan (Almost went Dick Lebeau)
Special Teams - Bobby April

OFFENSIVE STARTERS

QB - Tom Brady
RB - Adrian Peterson
FB - Marcell Reese
WR - Calvin Johnson
WR - AJ Green
WR - Brandon Marshall (Payton is going 3 WR sets all day)
TE - Rob Gronkowski
OT - Joe Thomas
OG - Mike Iupati
C - Maurkice Pouncey
OG - Logan Mankins
OT - Trent Williams

DEFENSIVE STARTERS (This was harder than offense for me)

DE - Haloti Ngata
NT - Vince Wilfork
DE - JJ Watt
OLB - Demarcus Ware
ILB - Patrick Willis
ILB - Lawrence Timmons
OLB - Mario Williams (suck it Von Miller)
CB - Darrelle Revis
CB - Johnathon Joseph
Nickel - Richard Sherman
FS - Jairus Byrd
SS - Kam Chancellor

SPECIAL TEAMS

KR - Jacoby Jones
PR - Leodis McKelvin
K - Sebastian Janikowski
P - Brandon Fields

All just my personal preferences.

How the team is built is completely dependent on the capabilities of our opponent. If they are big and slow but powerful then I'm going to look for more of a ZBS style offense. If they are small and speedy then I go with something different.

I secretly wanted to put Matty Staff as my QB.

Yeah, I thought about this. I was about to ask, "What kind of aliens are we playing?" But then I realized I was about to ask, "What kind of aliens are we playing?" and didn't write anything.

See this is where I think it gets interesting because I don't Shaun Payton would be a good fit to work with Brady and Bellicheck. Those two have been working one of the league's most complicated option based systems while the Saints have been running the exact same dozen simple plays for years now and just executing them to perfection. This is why I think this would be so much fun to do with football because it wouldn't just be the all pro teams, cause you need to consider scheme fits and how the talent fits together.

I don't know about the offense but for the Defense I'd pick Mike Zimmer to be the DC, I think he's doing the most impressive job with his aggressive 4-3.

DE (4)
JJ Watt, Julius Peppers, DeMarcus Ware, Jason Pierre Paul

DT (4)
Haloti Ngata, Geno Atkins, Henry Melton, Darnell Dockett/Calais Campbell

LB (5)
Von Miller, Patrick Willis, Novarro Bowman, Lance Briggs, Daryl Washington

CB (5)
Darelle Revis, Joe Haden, Patrick Peterson, Jon Joseph, Richard Sherman (we're gunna need somebody to lead us in our **** talking and he'd be such a beastly gunner)

S (4)
Earl Thomas, Jarius Byrd, Harrison Smith, Kenny Phillips

Think that team fits the way Zimmer would ideal handle it, with all the safeties being phenomenal playing the deep ball and covering the center of the field. LBs who can run, and a DL that can push their way around the edges with DTs that'll burst through the strained interior.

Humanoids with similar physical profiles. We do not have access to any film on their team, but maybe we can steal some pages from their playbook to figure out what their system emphasizes. Lets say they run something similar to where the league is moving, a spread based passing attack that doesn't neglect the running game, like the Packers or Pats, but doesn't focus on it either, like the Seahawks or 9ers.

Who do we pick to win this biggest of games? Paul Maurice will obviously be the head coach since he's the only man who's coached against the aliens before and won, but who's on the roster, who's coaching each side of the ball, what system are we using? There is much to discuss and decide upon before the final 54 is settled.
Have you tried this before? I feel like I've heard that Paul Maurice line before.

It wasn't me but there was a legendary wikipedia entry about the hockey version of this including game summaries for the best of 7 series.

you're welcome for the inspiration rose, bud.

and it is different from just a typical all-pro team in that it puts much more emphasis on guys who are "big game players".

ie. he might not be the best at his position right now but would i take ed reed as my starting safety for one game with the lives of all humanity on the line?

They are to use multiple offensive sets with heavy rotation and a high tempo. No huddle. I feel like giving the keys to Sean Payton.

Quarterback: Russell Wilson (18 months? He's got it.)
also: Drew Brees (the ol' vet version and insurance. Arguably the best in the league, but doesn't have Wilson's wildcard ability.)

Primary running back: Adrian Peterson
also: Marshawn Lynch (to spell AP)
aso: Chris Johnson (on a rotating basis)
also: Jamaal Charles (secondary to Chris Johnson, and will return kicks.)

Fullback: Vontae Leach (intimidation factor on offense)
also: Michael Robinson (who will also play special teams)

X receiver - Calvin Johnson
Z receiver - Larry Fitzgerald
Y receiver - Percy Harvin (will return kicks)
also: AJ Green (he'll see a lot of plays)
also: Stevie Johnson (quietly one of the hardest-to-cover wideouts on the planet)
also: Demaryius Thomas (a little more training and he can be unstoppable)
also: Brandon Marshall (can be force-fed the ball like CJ and Fitz)
also: Torrey Smith (will rotate in to take the top off)

Starting tight end: Rob Gronkowski
also: Kyle Rudolph (a lot like Gronk)
also: Heath Miller (you can see I'm going traditional at this position)

Left Tackle: Joe Staley
Left Guard: Jahri Evans
Center: Max Unger
Right Guard: Mike Iupati
Right Tackle: Joe Thomas
also: Trent Williams
also: Russell Okung
also: Logan Mankins

Pete Carroll is the Defensive Coordinator. There is no "scheme." He does what he wants.

5-tech: J.J. Watt
Nose tackle: Vince Wilfork
3-tech: Geno Atkins
LEO: Von Miller
also: Justin Smith (to back up Watt and rotate in elsewhere)
also: Haloti Ngata (to rotate in for Wilfork or Watt)
also: Ndamukong Suh (to back up Atkins)
also: Aldon Smith (for pass rush)
also: Bruce Irvin (he'll be there in 18 months)

Outside linebacker: DeMarcus Ware
Outside linebacker: Chad Greenway
Middle linebacker: Patrick Willis
also: Navorro Bowman
also: Clay Matthews III
also: Daryl Washington

Cornerback: Richard Sherman
Cornerback: Charles Tillman
Nickel cornerback: Darrelle Revis (because I think his change of direction is better than the other two, who are also taller)
also: Patrick Peterson (who will also return punts)
also: Brandon Flowers
also: Joe Haden

Free safety: Earl Thomas (centerfielder)
Strong safety: Charles Woodson (keeping an eye on everything)
also: Kam Chancellor (to be deployed as necessary)
also: Harrison Smith (he's good)

Kicker: Blair Walsh
Punter: Andy Lee

I just did offense for now. I will do the defense later

QB: Aaron Rodgers
QB: Tom Brady

RB: Adrian Peterson
RB: Marshawn Lynch
RB: CJ Spiller

WR: Calvin Johnson
WR: AJ Green
WR: Julio Jones
WR: Victor Cruz

TE: Rob Gronkowski
TE: Jimmy Graham
TE: Vernon Davis
TE: Aaron Hernandez

LT: Trent Williams
LG: Mike Iupati
OC: Ryan Kalil
RG: Carl Nicks
RT: Sebastian Vollmer
OL: Joe Thomas
OL: Jahri Evans
OL: Nick Mangold

Offensively I would run out of a base 12 personnel with Gronk and Jimmy Graham at TE, Peterson at RB and Megatron and AJ Green at WR. This personnel set gives me the freedom to be multiple in my formations. It can quickly become 3 WR with Graham lining in the slot and if I sub Spiller for AD and Hernandez for Gronk then what would be a relatively light 12 personnel can quickly become anything from 3 WR to 5 WR sets.

Graham would be the F TE and used in motion and in the slot to garner the best match up. My offensive philosophy will be based on using the entire width and depth of the field. With Green and Johnson outside I will force teams to utilise more cover 2 with safeties deep which should allow a backfield combo of Peterson and Lynch to run wild against 7 man fronts. Once the defense starts to cheat up to stop the run I will have Gronk and Graham exploit the seams. If the defense decides to be aggressive with regards to trying to get to the QB I think I have a really good pass blocking line and can keep Gronk in to block then release.

Offensvie Coordinator: Josh McDaniels

McDaniels isn’t a good HC but he is still one of the top OCs in the business and has a lot of experience running this offense which is very similar to the current Pats offense
