I also loved a rookie WR prospect a few years ago, a Ted Thompson draft pick ala Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Greg Jennings.

His name was Terrance Murphy, and he showed early glimpses of some serious game.

Fluke neck injury, on special teams when the idiot (Najeh Davenport IIRC) fumbled the ball, Murphy ended up diving to recover the ball and his neck was hit..... career over before it really began.

Yeah, sorry. And is the father of this Jeff Fuller...

Although he still had an admirable career, I feel that Al Toon might've been considered an all-time great WR had concussions not ended his career at age 29. He was my favorite non-49ers WR, ever.

His son is named Nick Toon, which is awesome. Another 49er that didn't play long was Chet Brooks.

Drafted before fellow WR Jerry Rice.

IIRC, drafted before fellow RB Tony Dorsett.

Let's start to put together an All-Time team.
Although it's going to be heavy on RB's.... very.

QB- (Carson Palmer?.... he was headed for greatness before the ACL)
QB-
QB-
RB- Bo Jackson
RB- Marcus Dupree
RB- Billy Sims
RB- Terrell Davis (was clearly a HOF player, but the ACL keeps him out)
RB- Willis McGahee (as good as he's been, he was so much greater before)
RB- Robert Edwards
RB- William Andrews
RB- Curt Warner
(I didn't put in Sayers because he still got enshrined in Canton, the others didn't, and they were truly great enough to coast in if not for the knees/hip.)

WR- Sterling Sharpe
WR-
WR-
WR- Robert Brooks (see 1995. then see 1996 ACL)
WR- Wendell Davis (I see you Bears fans)

Him and Winslow should have been Gronk and Graham.

Sticking with the homer theme I'll add Justin Tuck to the list. Could have been great but dude is always hurt.

that is a perfect example, Winslow had everything to be one of the best minus the dedication, brain to do dumb things because it was the motorcyle that started all the injury problems

and Shockey could have been just like Gronk.

Wendell Davis had one of the worst injuries ever sustained in an NFL game, but the man was not on his way to greatness or anything close to it, lol.

Completely severed tendons in both knees and had his kneecaps literally end up in his thighs. They couldn't even find them at first. *gag*

What about greatness derailed by perception?

Bc in my opinion, Lance Briggs is a borderline HOF player who has been overlooked his entire career bc the overrated Urlacher took all of the spotlight in Chicago.

And the fact that he plays a somewhat "unsexy" WLB position

Which ironically in the Tampa 2 defense, is the more important LB position. Yet Urlacher still got all of the spotlight.

Lance has been a boss his whole career and just doesn't get any recognition for it. It really is a shame. The guy is a stud and has been for a long time.

Derrick Brooks played WLB for most of his career and won a DPOY at the WLB spot, it all comes down to solid play v. all star play.... and Briggs has always been a very good player that has been solid for years, but he was never the "Guy" in the bears LB core

See that's where perception hurts him. How was he not "the guy" in that LB core? He made more plays than Urlacher his whole career.

We see a similar situation happening in SF but not to the same extent. Navarro Bowman is better than Patrick Willis but no one is ready to come to terms with that yet bc of the perception.

Urlacher was the heart and soul, and when Urlacher was healthy he easily the more impactful player of the two.

Urlacher - 41.5 sacks, 22 Ints
Briggs - 12 sacks, 15 sacks

AGAIN im not saying Briggs isnt/wasnt good, but Urlacher was the Bears' "Ray Lewis" he was the "Guy" and the injuries that he had later on kinda take away from how dominate Urlacher was earlier on in his career

Kind of pointless to mention sacks when discussing WLBs in the Tampa 2, since they never ever blitz the QB. In his 14 seasons with the Bucs Brooks only recorded 13.5 sacks.
