A new NCAA rules interpretation that allows prospects to sign a financial aid agreement with their school of choice as early as August if they plan to enroll in January may be more than a tool for athletes to end their recruitment sooner It may also be a way for coaches to get around the SEC's limit of 25 signees per class.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Tennessee coach Butch Jones appears to be among those using the new interpretation to maximize the numbers in his 2014 class.

"If we can find a way to sign 35, we'll sign 35," Jones told the Knoxville Quarterback Club recently, as reported by the News Sentinel.

They're almost there. Tennessee currently has 34 commitments in its 2014 class. According to the News Sentinel, a half-dozen or more of those commitments signed financial aid agreements with the school last month thanks to the new interpretation.

As such, they will not count against the SEC's limit for the 2014 class.

Programs have long utilized a loophole that does not count early enrollees toward the current year's class. When the SEC set its limit of 25 per year in 2011, it defined the current year's class as athletes who signed between Dec. 1 and May 31.

With the new rule interpretation allowing early enrollees to sign as early as August, it means those athletes won't be counted in the current year's class as long as they fit within the NCAA limit of 85 scholarship players on the full roster.

Another practice the Vols may be using, according to the News Sentinel, is blueshirting - a practice where a player arrives as a walk-on, is awarded a scholarship sometime after his arrival, and although he may play immediately, his signing is counted in the following year's class.

The catch is that to qualify, the player may not have been recruited, as it's defined by the NCAA. That means no official visit or in-home visit from coaches, no signed Letter of Intent or financial aid.

Tennessee is not the first to use the practice. New Mexico State, for instance, reportedly has been doing it for several years.

As recruiting rules evolve, recruiters get more creative.

Coaches will find ways to bend rules as much as possible. Unless there is something stupid obvious the NCAA isn't going to do crap.
