Default Ranking the Head Coaches

I'm still rather bored until the preseason actually starts, so was curious everyones rankings of the Head Coaches currently in the NFL. It's a lot harder than it seems, so if you want to bash it too much please make your own list to share with others. Here goes mine (reasoning for top 10)

1) Bill Belichick, Patriots- Love him or hate him he's far and above the next coach on this list. Although I feel he (or maybe the people under him) have slipped in recent years, he's still the best.

2) Jim Harbaugh, 49ers - Innovative and gets the most out of his players. He's aready one of the best in his short lived career.

3) John Harbaugh, Ravens - Although he edged out his brother in the big one, I've still been more impressed with Jim in his short career than John. John is still one of the best, but he inherited a rather good roster and Newsome always stocks the shelves.

4) Mike Shanahan, Redskins - I think I may have him higher than most, but he always seems to get the best out of his players and injuries to star players only slow him down so much.

5) Tom Coughlin, Giants - On a year to year basis you don't know what you're going to get with the Giants, perhaps Coughlin is losing some of his motivation, but he's still one of the best.

6) Mike McCarthy, Packers - A personal favorite of mine, he almost always seems to have his team prepared and ready to play.

7) Pete Carrol, Seahawks - He runs a great scheme with great personnel. A little higher than some more proven guys, but I think he's on his way.

8) Sean Payton, Saints - I think Paytons evolved from his early days that made you question him, but I still don't know if he always does what's best for the team.

9) Jeff Fisher, Rams - Right now, he's one of the best. The Rams are going to be set up for major disappointing seasons, only to surprise everyone later. But right now, Fisher keeps them in nearly every game.

10) Mike Tomlin, Steelers - I struggled with where to place Tomlin because he inherited a good team, was able to retain a DC that almost guarantees a top 5-10 D every season and already had a good QB. Sure he's coached well, but he inherited a lot.

11) Andy Reid, Chiefs

12) Marvin Lewis, Bengals

13) Mike Smith, Falcons

14) Gary Kubiak, Texans

15) John Fox, Broncos

16) Greg Schiano, Buccaneers

17) Jason Garrett, Cowboys

18) Rex Ryan, Jets

19) Leslie Frazier, Vikings

20) Joe Philbin, Dolphins

21) Mike Munchak, Titans

22) Chuck Pagano, Colts

23) Ron Rivera, Panthers

24) Jim Schwartz, Lions

25) Bruce Arians, Cardinals

26) Dennis Allen, Raiders

27) Marc Trestman, Bears

28) Chip Kelly, Eagles

29) Mike McCoy, Chargers

30) Rob Chudzinski, Browns

31) Gus Bradley, Jaguars

32) Doug Marrone, Bills

Agree with the list. As much as Bill Bellichik has been a great coach, Jim Harbaugh is very slowly gaining that recognition and possibly overtaking him.

Bellichik has been slipping in terms of talent evaluation. He's taken an awfully long time to rebuild that defense.

Jim Harbaugh has been very successful continuing to build that team and evaluating talent and developing. Especially the QB position. Look what he did with Alex Smith in 1 year, then developed Kap.

Its amazing how quickly Jim Harbaugh has become one of the best. The 49ers were a really talent rich team when he arrived, but he stabilized the team and produced immediately. He just knows QBs and how to work them. He never overloads a guy with more than he can handle and properly supports them with a strong running game. He used Alex Smith very well and then smoothly transitioned to the more talented Kaepernick. Both QB's had an offense that benefited their talents. His long term success depends on them drafting well and cultivating talent, but if Kaepernick pans out they should be strong for a while.

Jim Harbaugh is a huge prick also, but you ******* love the guy if its your team.

John Harbaugh was catching a lot of undue flack before last season. 5 times in the playoffs with at least 1 win in his first 5 years. Ozzie certainly restocks the shelves, but John is a very nice constant in a locker room that can have really strong personalities.

Jim Harbaugh is absolutely up there on the list. I have said for the last two years that I feel hes the best coach in the NFL right now, but he is a major douche (wouldn't keep me from hiring him, though).

I've always been a big fan of Jeff Fisher because he and my dad are childhood friends and I have gotten to spend time with him in years past, but damn...the guy is building a helluva defense over there...can't wait to see them continue to improve.

Yes, Jim Harbaugh can seem like a jerk on the sidelines and when questioned by the media. At the same time, it's better to have that kind of guy instead of someone who is more PR about things all the time, but doesn't get the job done. He's not here to make friends, and that's fine I guess.

Couglin at 5 even with two SBs? I guess SBs don't count for this list.

I factored in Coughlins superbowls, otherwise he'd be much lower. He has a hard job to do in a hard market, but he's too inconsistent as a head coach.

Saying superbowls don't count is just ignorant, considering 3 of the 4 above him has won superbowls, two of them have the same amount as Coughlin or more. One has 1, and the other one is widely regarded as one of the best and just lost the superbowl.

Coughlin at 5 is more than appropriate in my eyes. Let's see your list.

You have Marvin Lewis rated too high. I would put him more in the 20's range since he has yet to win a playoff game.

I
He can be inconsistent a he wants. Plus its not like he is coaching both sides of the ball. If there is anyweakness its his DC hires. That's the biggest knock I have with Coughlin. Still with all that and bring on our 4th DC he still managed to win 2 SB against the number 1 coach and has had only 1 losing season here.

At end of the day his SB total is getting up there that's all that matters. ESPN had him on the all time list. He can make that but can't make top 3? I don't think that list is accurate at all.

I don't waste time with lists of any kinds. I never make stuff like that.
BB won 3 and one guy hasn't won a SB at all. Forget one SB he has zero. The other popped his cherry this off season. I respect that and more than his brother. But still that's just one SB.

Not trying to split hairs or be a homer, but Jim also inherited one very talented roster when he took over in San Fran. He is doing a hell of a job, but he also had a great core of players to build his foundation on. Also, the 49ers FO have been doing an equally outstanding job of building that roster the last couple of seasons.

I'm a lot higher on Schiano than a lot, I think he did a really good job in his first season and will continue to improve into being a top 5-10 head coach in this league

Ranking coaches that haven't even coached a game is a waste of time, even by internet standards.

Notice how all the rookie head coaches are in spots 27-32?

That's what I thought.

I don't consider Arians a rookie because he coaches games for the Colts last season when Pagano was out

That's what I thought.
27-32 is still a ranking.

Thanks for that insight. I don't see a problem putting the coaches in order as long as you aren't projecting them over ones that have actually coach, but I guess everyone just likes to criticize and nobody wants to put up their own list.

You just waste your time commenting and complaining about them, got it.

No, you don't have it. I didn't waste my time. You made the effort into doing it. That's good. That's not my thing. I commented on it because that's what makes threads go. Good or bad. That's what a message board is for. You created a thread based on your opinion. I didn't agree. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate the time you put. I give you props for taking the time to do that. Trust me, if anyone knows about putting work in to post something it's me. See my Xs and Os thread in our section for effort. So no, you clearly don't get it. I will always respect an individual that takes time to post. And if I agree or disagree, I feel I should post because that person takes his or her time to make a thread that they want to share. So that's why I post.

Patriots go to a spread and smash records. Everyone starts using spread elements.

Patriots go to 2 TEs, and people start drafting TEs galore.

Patriots go to a hurry up... wait for it...

Belichick isn't perfect [if he was, he wouldn't have lost to Coughlin twice...], but he's been dictating what the NFL does year in and year out.

I've always been a big fan of Jeff Fisher because he and my dad are childhood friends and I have gotten to spend time with him in years past, but damn...the guy is building a helluva defense over there...can't wait to see them continue to improve.

I agree about the D. I also think the O is going to explode with the additions of Jake Long, Jared Cook, Tavon Austin and Stedmon Bailey.
