Default What was the top coaching blunder of 2012?

John Fox having Peyton Manning take a knee to take the Ravens into overtime, Greg Schiano's attempt to recover the ball on kneel down snap by the Giants, Bill Belicheck grabbing a replacement official, etc.

Obviously there are others, but who takes the cake?

Here is a list of others in case you have forgotten:

Hard to top Schwartz turning what should have been a stop into an 81 yard TD with a 15 yard penalty on top of it. That's nearly the length of the field and a TD for not knowing he wasn't allowed to throw his flag. That's about as bad as possible. It's also one of the most understandable errors, though.

not on their list, but I think it easily goes to shanahan for leaving rg3 in the game when he was hobbling around. probly one of the worst coaching decisisons iver ever seen. put your franchise QBs long-term health at risk to try to win a playoff game in his rookie year....its not like hes a vet trying to win a SB, the Redskins were not gonna go far in the playoffs and Shanahan shoulda been looking to the future. RG3 is a competitor and of course wanted to stay in the game but it is the coaches job to protect his star player and he failed badly. dr james andrews had said before the game how concerned he was about rg3, and after a couple hits early on rg3s limp became a lot more noticable and thats the point where shanny needed to pull the plug...instead he was still calling for bootlegs and stuff that rg3 couldnt run. redskins mighta held on for the win if he had put Kirk Cousins in.

That's a good point. I forgot about that. The Redskins looked like the team with the momentum early on in the game until it was apparent that Griffin III's injury became more serious and he couldn't hit the water if he fell off the boat with his passes. By the time Cousins came in it was too late.

Yeah I've never been a fan of the "fade". Never seems to work as much as other plays in the redzone. It's like the new hip thing to do. You watch a lot of games from even just the 1990's and it wasn't as huge a deal as it is now. Can't believe they didn't give the ball to Frank Gore or just a halfback up the gut once. Ridiculous.

i dont think a fade was the called play, the ravens blitzed and got instant pressure and it became a broken play and kaepernick just had to throw it up

They shouldn't have thrown the ball on all four downs to begin with. They did run the ball once with Kaepernick, but it was called back because of a delay of game. Shame. Looks like he would have made it in the endzone too.

yea ill give you that. they looked like they were going in but stalled out and def easy to second-guess whatever they did, but I was just pointing out I dont think Roman or Harbaugh dialed up a fade as the play they were gonna run on 4th down, rather Kaepernick was about to get sacked and had nowhere to run so he just threw something up to crabtree, who wasnt ready for the ball, which is why I dont have a problem with them not throwing the flag in that spot.

I've gotta think the playcalling had to be in thinking that with Kaepernick at quarterback, every pass play had the alternate run option provided by Kaepernich's individual skillset. He just chose to throw it each time. It's not necessarily so mcuh that Harbaugh was calling for passes every time, but that 4 times in a row he left it up to his quarterback to get it done.

1st and Goal from the 7 - LaMichael James up the middle for 2 yards.

2nd and Goal from the 5 - Immediate roll right (cutting off half the field, when the red-zone is tight to begin with.) Incomplete at stick to Crabtree.

3rd and Goal from 5 - Quick motion screen to Crabtree. Crushing helmet to the face, incomplete.

4th and Goal from 5 - Iso Crab on right. 2-step fade. IMMEDIATELY. Poor throw. Incomplete.

Great defense played by Ravens. Refs let them play. But the playcalls were forcing the issue into tight windows.

I think the story was that the booth had already called for a review and it's only a penalty if the flag is thrown before the booth calls for a review.

It's a dumb rule all around. Did they get rid of it this offseason?

RG3 is a competitor and of course wanted to stay in the game but it is the coaches job to protect his star player and he failed badly. dr james andrews had said before the game how concerned he was about rg3, and after a couple hits early on rg3s limp became a lot more noticable and thats the point where shanny needed to pull the plug...instead he was still calling for bootlegs and stuff that rg3 couldnt run. redskins mighta held on for the win if he had put Kirk Cousins in.
This has to be it. Shanahan has seriously risked his franchise QB when he has a very solid back up. The players will always be ready to tear themselves up and the coaches/doctors need to protect them.

I think James Andrews got overruled by the coaches and RG3 took the the needle until he couldn't feel his knee until it gave out. Andrews left before the injection so he deny could doing it. Andrews is so desperately pushing RG3s miraculous healing so he doesn't get the backlash of letting a obviously badly injured player back into the game

As a Lions fan I was pretty upset during that Texans thanksgiving game. What I took from the outcome is that the replays that are supposed to help the game can be nullified at will, even when they overturn a call. I know the challenge flag shouldn't have been thrown but it still angers me. *start tangent rant* It seems that the past couple of years have had the Lions getting screwed by some obscure rule which is then revisited in the offseason (Calvin not getting the TD vs the Bears). *end rant* I understand that is probably not the most logical way to look at things but there's my two cents.

Being the head coach and "not knowing" why your best player was in for like five plays is certainly up there.
