Default Why does Andrew Luck get a free pass for doing the exact same thing as Alex Smith?

Player A) 188/315, 59.7%, 1919 Yards, 9 TDs, 4 INT (1.3 INT%), Long of 51, 6.1 Y/A
Rushing: 53 carries, 265 Yards, 1 TD, 2 Fumbles.
Team Offense: 14th in PPG
Team Rushing: 119 YPG, 4.2 YPC
Team Defense: 12.3 PPG Allowed,

Player B (Stats through 8 games(EDIT NOW UPDATED TO 9 GAMES)) 183/311, 58.8%, 2198 Yards, 14 TDs, 6 INT (1.9 INT%), Long of 73, 7.1 Y/A
Rushing: 32 Carries, 200 Yards, 3 TDs, 3 Fumbles.
Team Offense: 12th in Points
Team Rushing: 110.22 YPG, 4.4 YPC
Team Defense: 21.4 PPG Allowed (After giving up 35 to the Rams, Luck's turnovers didn't help there.

So, one team is 9-0, the other is 6-3. The difference in those 3 wins would have to be defense (scoring 9 points against SD didn't help Luck, either)

BTW A is Alex "Game Manager and worthless QB" Smith
B is Andrew "Best QB Prospect since John Elway" Luck

You decide how apart these QBs are.

*Waits for Luck defenders to cape up*

Good. This board needs more Player A vs. Player B stat threads.

Well considering that KC has scored 7 non-offensive TD's in 9 games vs. 1 for the Colts your PPG totals are essentially worthless. There is pretty much a 5 PPG differential between the 2 offenses.

They don't do the same thing though, do they? Player A is on a team built around the RB and running game and defense. Player B is on a team built around only him (for the most part) and the passing game.

Luck is without Wayne and Allen. He's throwing the ball to Hilton, DHB, and Fleener. That's pretty much it, right? He doesn't have a running game to take any of the pressure off. That's all I got.

Alex is good at what he does. He's not gonna be the main reason you win many games but he's not gonna be the main reason you lose many games, either. He is definitely in his own category among today's NFL QBs, it seems. He's a good QB, IMO. Good for the Chiefs for seeing that when they traded for him.

And the running game? Which is pretty much non-existent for the Colts right now. Care to break down how many yards Jamaal Charles has vs. Colts RBs now that you're looking into #'s?

john elway's stats were fairly underwhelming early in his career even though his teams won and everyone knew he was good, solid comparison OP

One is a 2nd year player. The other is an 8 year vet.
Luck is still going end up with 25-28 TDs and less than 12 INTs this season.

Alex Smith has never come close to those numbers.

Once Luck gets a reliable RB and some upgrades at WR primarily to replace the inevitable departures of DHB and Wayne, he's going to look like the man again.

I do think his hype though gives Luck a firewall against criticism.

I've never seen a QB throw for less than 200 yards or complete less than 50% of his passes regularly get praised by analysts for playing a great game.

Switch QBs and put Luck on the Chiefs and Smith on the Colts and I think the Chiefs would be SB favorites and the Colts would be out of playoff contention.

Watching the game helps. Last year was an offense on just throwing it deep. This year they insist on running the ball then once they get down a lot they remember they have a QB and force him to throw his way back into it.

The Titans are 4-5 and just lost their starting QB for the year. The Jaguars and Texans have a combined 3 wins through week 10. Put Alex Smith on the Colts this year and they are still a playoff team by default. They might not get very far, but they'd still be going.

Where are Brandon Weedens stats. You would be surprised with how mature/developed he is and how his stats show that.

I'm not sure the Colts are winners by default with Smith. Highly doubt they beat the 9ers, or the Broncos which would given them the same record as Tenn right now.

Russell Wilson +1.2
Philip Rivers +1.2
Drew Brees +1.3
Michael Vick +1.5
Aaron Rodgers +1.7
Peyton Manning +1.7
Nick Foles +2.1

QB's that are .4 - .9 Higher in YPA

Andy Dalton +.4
Colin Kaepernick +.5
Ben Roethlisberger +.5
Matthew Stafford +.5

There are also 6 QBs between Dalton and Luck meaning he is 18th in the league in the stat you chose to defend him.
