Default Coaching Thread: Schwartz is gone!!!!

Let's keep the coaching talk out of the regular season thread.

Schwartz is gone!

Who do people like as the replacement? Got to think we have the most ideal opening in the league with the talent we have.

Nightmare scenario - They promote Linehan to HC.

I figured Linehan was the most guaranteed guy on the staff to be shown the door.

Detroit has to be an attractive job to HC candidates. With a franchise QB (arguable?) and key defensive pieces. Maybe they can lure a big fish.

Wouldn't mind that actually. But I'd want to find a very creative OC after seeing how Chicago produced on that side of the ball.

Besides Lovie, I would preference a Offensive head coach. I think our concern should be the offense right now. Especially Stafford. The defensive is going to be very solid at the least for the forseeable future IMO.

People argue that he took the Lions to the playoffs so he deserved more of a leash.

I think Mayhew increasing talent level on the team did more for the team than Schwartz's coaching. Plus he inherited Calvin.

Mayhew is safe by the way.

Mayhew seems safe.

I think the biggest thing Shwartz had for him was the fact that him and Mayhew were very much on the same page in what they wanted to do each offseason. They worked well together and as a result of that we have a lot of talent.

Problem is, he couldn't piece it together and failed to ever close out a season.

Very interested to see what type of scheme we go with on defense. The DLine is built for Schwartz's philosophy and we have invested heavily in that in recent drafts. I can't imagine we stray far from that but with Suh hitting FA in a year and we are in a prime position to get a 3-4 OLB, is there any chance we make the switch? Could Ansah work in a 3-4 Aldon Smith type role?

I agree, Detroit looks like an ideal chose for those seeking a HCing position. Everything is in place for a consistent SB challenge.

I like the idea of Lovie Smith, he could take our defense to the next level and with a solid OC, the offense could continue to develop.

I just hope Mayhew is the one doing the hiring and it isn't Ford who makes the choice.

I think we could migrate to a 3-4 fairly easily. Ziggy would excel as a 3-4 OLB imo.

As for coaches, I think Whisenhunt will be near the top of our list.

I think we may not get a shot at Lovie Smith.

I feel as if he'd jump at the chance of re-uniting with the old Tampa group which is rumored to be their plan.

EDIT:

To add to this supposedly Lovie has already gotten Jeff Tedford signed up as his OC wherever he ends up.

Wouldn't mind seeing him in Detroit. He certainly could fix up this defense into something special. Tedofrd has a good history with QBs so that sounds fairly appealing as well.

I am not in favor of a coach on one side of the ball or the other. What I do want is a coach who can teach this team discipline so that they do not beat themselves. When that is accomplished I think this team could be pretty good. Which candidates out there fit that bill? I am not sure.

I want Lovie. 22 turnovers forced with only 8 in the 1-6 streak doesn't cut it. 33 sacks with this Dline doesn't cut it, though they did have good hits and hurries. And finally that one extra defensive play needed in the 4th Quarter that was never made, doesn't cut it. Give me Lovie.

I think Stafford and Bush will always be turnover prone but always be able to move the ball well with a healthy Calvin. I want a number 2 WR so Stafford doesn't have to force it to Calvin. 9 of 19 picks intended for Calvin. 56% completion to Calvin. Plus if Calvin gets hurt the offense doesn't look like crap like agianst Packers and Vikings and Giants (limited Calvin). Forcing to Calvin can be good, but it can also be very bad. Many of the forces were because the other WRs/Tes couldn't get open in single coverage. Plus 9% drop rate. Most teams are around 5-6%. That hurts the comp %.

I think we can win with Stafford but he always will likely have his turnover and accuracy problems. If a coach can reign him in, then I will be very happy but I'd rather get the defense playing up to their immense potential.

The new coach, whoever it is, will look like a genius if the Lions have 8-10 less turnovers next year and about 6-7 more forced. The talent is there.

Agree, the focus should be on getting some weapons on the offense besides Calvin and once we do that, all focus should be shifted to the defense. THe offense will be young and all locked up for a while.

The defense has the talent there to be very good, something I never thought i'd say about the lions. With improvement from Ansah, Taylor, Slay and Bentley alone should allow for the squad to be much better next year.

Stafford was top 6 in TDs, 3rd down %, first downs passing the ball (which leads to more attempts) and yards (which is due to all the first downs he leads the team which leads to more attempts which leads to a boat load of yards despite only 58.5%).

Comp %(both Stafford misses and WRs holding onto the ball) and turnovers(19 picks(not all Staffords faul either) and 15 fumbles) is where the work is needed. So many attempts is a good thing but also leads to more turnover opportunities too. I don't think the attempts will decrease. Detroit was still 14th in rushing attempts. I don't think 100 more carries like Buffalo had, fixes the turnovers (since Bush and Bell lost 8 fumbles combined). 15 fumbles is just as bad as 19 picks.

Offensive minded isn't needed with the talent we have. They will move the ball and score points barring turnovers or a Calvin injury. I don't know if a coach can even fix the turnovers. They aren't out there with the bullets flying. Stafford is still going to get his attempts and take his chances.

The defense needs to become a Seattle/Carolina type defense. Mix that with this already potent offense and great things can happen.

I'm weary of putting everything in the Slay and Bentley basket, especially if they lose Mathis. We'll see if Houston can get back to 2010-2012 form. 2013 sucked for him which was disappointing. Plus Delmas has a big cap number (8 million). That needs to be dealt with too.
