Default All Time Ultimate Team

I've been fascinated lately with the Ultimate Team feature on Madden 25 and it's harder than blazes to get the players I want on it so I decided just to make my own all time ultimate roster but I imposed a few rules on it to make it a bit more interesting. The first is that you can't have more than one player per franchise, that is to say you can't have Ray Lewis and Jim Brown but you could have Joe Thomas and Ray Lewis. The second rule is that the player is only as effective as the team you put him with, so you could pick Joe Montana as a Chief but you get the Joe Montana that was with the Cheifs. So without further adieu, my all time ultimate team.

OFF:
WR – Randy Moss NE
TE – Shannon Sharpe Den
LT – Anthony Munoz CIN
LG – Bruce Matthews TEN
C – Mike Webster PIT
RG- Larry Allen DAL
RT – Tony Bosselli JAX
WR – Jerry Rice SF
WR- Calvin Johnson DET
QB – Peyton Manning IND
HB – Walter Payton CHI
DEF:
DE – Reggie White GB
DT – Warren Sapp TB
DT – Alan Page MIN
DE – Bruce Smith BUF
Sam – Lawrence Taylor NYG
Mike – Ray Lewis BAL
Will – Derrick Thomas KC
CB – Deion Sanders ATL
CB – Willie Brown OAK
FS – Sean Taylor WAS
SS – Ronnie Lott NYJ

Feel free to throw in special teams if you're so inclined, but I wasn't.

I would put Rod Woodson at FS from Oakland, take out Sean Taylor, and then put Darrell Green at CB from WAS, or you could use Champ Bailey from WAS.

The records and everything were left in CLE so you should be able to have Brown and Ray Lewis.

That is a bit of contention as to who owns the brown's history as the Cleveland Browns are not a continuous franchise but instead an expansion team with the same name. Its like the Titans not acknowledging their Houston Oiler roots or more appropriately the chiefs denying their dallas texans roots because there is now the houston texans. I guess the question is when does the money go when they sell Jim Brown jerseys? Does it go to the owner of the current Browns or does it go to the owner of the current Ravens.

I didn't include kickers/punters. Modern kickers are much better than past kickers, so you can pretty much just take your pick out of whoever. If you forced me to, I'd easily move a few players/teams around and have Darren Bennett and Morten Andersen.

It's not contentious. They literally had to leave everything but the players and coaches in Cleveland. The Oilers/Titans is completely different (though Houston should have done what Cleveland did, and the "Texans" should be the Oilers).

The Ravens want absolutely nothing to do with the old Browns. It isn't like Irsay who took Johnny U with him.

I could of sworn the NFL is treating the Ravens as an expansion team, and the Browns are just a continuous franchise now and have that little stopgap in their team history?

I believe one of the conditions of the old Browns moving was that the history of the team would stay in Cleveland, and the next expansion franchise would assume that history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimore_Ravens

Quote:
As part of a settlement between the league and the city of Cleveland, Modell was required to leave the Browns' name, colors and heritage in Cleveland for a replacement team that took the field in 1999. In return, he was allowed to take his players to Baltimore, where his new team would be legally recognized as an expansion team. The team's name was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven—as Poe lived for a time in Baltimore, died and was buried there in 1849.

Notes: It’s really hard to find a multiple time pro bowl right tackle.
It’s really tough to find a multiple time pro bowl right tackle. Most pro bowl tackles play on the left. I tried to get people who played left tackle, right tackle, right defensive end, left defensive end, split end, flanker, etc. instead of going with two offensive tackles, three wide receivers, etc. I didn’t really succeed at defensive tackle, but I think I was able to do it elsewhere.

So, in research I found that the Canton Bulldogs became the Cleveland Bulldogs and were later purchased and absorbed into the New York Giants. If the Canton Bulldogs are permitted to be a separate team, please let me know, because I would change my RB/HB to Jim Thorpe.

Can you pick the same player twice if they were on different teams? If I can, I’d switch Vince Lombardi (Packers) to Bill Belicheck (Patriots), Adam Vinatieri (Patriots) to Morten Anderson (Saints), and replace Drew Brees (Saints) on the backup list with Reggie White (Packers).

I have Rod Woodson as a DB because he can play corner or safety.

You kinda have to go with Anthony Munoz. Not just because he’s arguably the best LT ever, but because he’s one of only two HoF players for the Bengals.
I went with an extra middle linebacker to help facilitate a switch between the 3-4 and 4-3 as necessary.

I know Montana was an all-time great and most say he’s the best ever; but to me, Johnny Unitas is still the best ever.

If you guys want to do this, I'd recommend leaving running back until close to last.
I went with Ray Lewis (Ravens) and Joe Thomas (Browns) based on OP's rules. Should they change, I'll probably edit this team a little.

Other things I could have done:
Instead of Marshall Faulk and Calvin Johnson, I could have gone with Barry Sanders and Torry Holt. I probably should have.

Instead of Kevin Mawae and Rod Woodson, I could have gone with Mike Webster and Darrelle Revis.

I could have put Jim Brown at fullback, not included Ray Lewis and had Larry Csonka or Larry Little as a backup. But I think Csonka is closer to what a modern fullback is.

Instead of Rod Woodson and Derrick Brooks, I could have gone with Jack Ham and John Lynch. As someone who could excel at CB, SS and FS, Ronnie Lott would then be moved to defensive back.

I could have gone with offensive/defensive coordinators. I thought that was going a bit too far.

No. It's the opposite of this. This was dealt with very specifically as a condition of the move. Zero contention. Everything that was ever Browns belongs to the current Browns. The Ravens are treated as the expansion team for all historical purposes.

Yep. The Baltimore Ravens record book and history starts from 1996 while the Indianapolis Colts took all of Baltimore's history and records with them in 1984.

Jim Brown is still the all-time leading rusher for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns' history runs from 1946-95 then 1999-present.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/cle/

Johnny Unitas and Raymond Berry were the all-time leading passer and receiver for the 'Indianapolis Colts' until they were broken by Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison. Unitas though remained loyal to the city of Baltimore and attended many Ravens games.
