I was talking on top of those moves. You get Hernandez money back, too. That's $26m in savings on top of the $8.5m they already had top work with.

They can do a lot with ~$35m and draft picks.

Highly doubt they get the Hernandez money back to be honest.

Even on top of those moves, if the Pats have $23m or $25m in cap space it won't mean much difference. They aren't likely going to be able to get someone who can do more than Amendola for the extra $2m.

I would rather keep Amendola than to overpay to resign Edelman. I think they need to get away from this small ball game they like to play. But that can be done sesnsibly in the draft.

In free agency I would like to see them reinforce some areas on defense. Bring in guys like Arthur Jones, resign Talib, sign Tyson Jackson on a low deal etc

This team doesn't need to go out and splurge in FA on offense. Maybe sign a guy like Geoff Schwartz but that's it. You think Belichick is going to give Alex Mack $10m a year? Because that's what it's going to take. Eric Decker will likely require something similar, maybe $8m a year. That's how bad teams build

Our defense wasn't the problem this year, not from a personnel stand point (injuries were more a factor than who we had). The offense struggled, especially in the AFC championship game. I'm sorry but I'm so over thinking we can get by with Brady playing with a bunch of no names. Offense is certainly the priority after resigning Talib.

As long as the Patriots don't pay for any expensive free agents (including Edelman, Talib), I'll be happy. There are a bunch of second-and-third-tier guys I'd really like though. It's kind of hard to say what New England should do in the draft, because a lot of positions of possible need could potentially be filled by players already on roster, such as wide receiver (Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce), defensive tackle (Siliga, Armstead, Vellano), left cornerback (Ryan), and strong safety (Harmon.)

The things currently absent from the roster which I think they should definitely keep an eye out for are a flex tight end, a center, a right guard, defensive end depth, and a coverage linebacker.

Offense should definitely be the priority but the value for FAs isn't good this year. I would maybe take the risk on Maclin or Nicks but in no situation could I justify giving Decker the $50m he's going to get. Shore up the interior line, bring in a decent WR and then hit it hard in the draft. I just look at teams who give up shitloads of money to good not great FAs and see a while load of mediocre teams.

I just posted a 4 rounder and I had NE take....

1. Stephen Tuitt - DL - was not healthy all year, put on the previous year and you see an end who is very similar to Watt, also has the flex to play inside.

TRADE(Dal) - their second and third for Dallas second and fourth
2. Austin Seferian-Jenkins - TE - Can play inline or split out, would go higher if healthier.

4. Vinnie Sunseri - SS - Big, smart, hard hitter, came back from torn ACL, if stayed could be a 2nd round pick. Wilson sadly looks to be bust.

4. Brandon Colemon - WR - big(6'-6") and a Rutgers alum, this was going back and forth between RB DeVonta Freeman, OG Anthony Steen and CB Bene Benwikere

I'm not saying go out and sign expensive free agents. Cap flexibility now can set the team up for much easier future years. Talib is a priority because of the impact he has on the defense, and it'd be best to not wait until next off-season to get Solder's new contract done.

The Pats have a chance to get out of Amendola's contract. They put that contract together this way in case he proved unreliable, which he did. They'll probably go after Emmanuel Sanders again and can probably get him for less than they'd get back for cutting Amendola. I'd like to see Edelman back because he brings a lot to the team as a chains mover and as a punt returner, but there's certainly a cap on how much I'd pay him.

As for the free agent class, the only ones I'm really interested in that would cost a bunch are Talib and the TEs.

One WR you can get on a 1 year deal will be Sidney Rice when he is cut. That is someone I would call right away. Darnell Dockett is another player that will be released as well. Throw in Chris Clemons who will be cut as well and is 33.

All of these guys pobably get on 1 year deals and all three fit what we need. Downfield tall WR, Interior pass rusher, and a wide-9 pass rush specialist

Bolded. Exactly how I feel. Upgrades needed? Yes, but we might have the solution already. It's so weird. I guess it's all on BB's confidence.
Interior OL, a TE and a coverage LB for sure though need to be addressed whether through FA and/or the draft.

I wouldn't touch the LB position. Jamie Collins showed in the preseason he is a player for the future and bear in mind that Mayo was the sub package LB until he got hurt. Mayo and Collins can both play in passing situations.

I think the Patriots should go BPA in the draft. While they may not have any glaring needs (as in this position is directly leading to losses) they definitely have a number of areas which can be made better.

I agree with you completely but I still think we need depth. Especially after this year. Spikes is gone and maybe even Fletcher. We need some more bodies behind the starters.

A prospect I wouldn't mind seeing is Telvin Smith, built like a safety, hits like a LB...can cover TE's and RB's but if Collins and Mayo are the nickel LB's then what? play a 3-3? Play Smith as the roaming backer?

I stand by pass rush specialist. If you can pressure with 4 then you have the upper hand.

The problem I see is that if the Pats stay where they are they are unlikely to get a stand out defensive prospect.

There really aren't that many in this draft.

The strength of this draft IMO is on offense. The Pats can get a top WR or one of the top TEs hopefully if they stay where they are.

DE after Clowney is pretty slim and Ealy will likely be gone too. They could go for Tuitt who offers something different but I don't see him being an impact player. After that, someone like Trent Murphy would be a nice player but is he going to make that much of a difference?

In saying that, in an ideal world after cuts, restructures, Hernandez etc the Pats could have close to $25m to spend. They could realistically if that's the case resign Talib and get a guy like Orakpo. That would free them up to go all ofense in the draft.

Add those 2 in FA then in the draft get a haul of

Marqise Lee/Paul Richardson/Odell Beckham Jr/Kelvin Benjamin
Travis Swanson
CJ Fiedorowicz

In the first few rounds and FA that would be my dream at this point

Ha, yeah it is a long shot but if everything falls into place and they do get flexibility in regards to the cap situation I could see Belichick going balls deep like he did in 2007.

The base of the team is there but we need 2 or 3 pieces to make us complete. Stud pass rusher, resign Talib, fix up the o line and get either a WR or TE.

Add this all in with Mayo, the DTs, Vollmer, Gronk etc coming back and i think we can make a real run at it next year

I think Orakpo is exactly the type of player BB would target. It's all about the cost, though, and I expect his to be massive. #fingerscrossed

He won't get into a bidding war that's for sure. But I don't think his price will be as high as it could have been with his injuries

Don't discount the defense in the draft to much there are always those few players in day 3 who turn into good ones. i.e.
DE - Ben Urban
DE - Will Clarke
DE - Kareem Martin
DE - Cassius Marsh
DT - Kelcy Quarles
DT - Shamar Stephen
DT - Jay Bromley
DT - Bruce Gaston

This is a very deep draft for CB's, plenty with size (6'-0" and up) and there are a few names of players in the 4th/5th round range who can develop.
Andre Hal
Bashaud Breeland
Walt Aikens
Philip Gaines
Bene Benwikere
Lavelle Westbrooks

3rd down pass rsuh specialist is something we need in the worst way and there are a few athletic DE/LB in the first few rounds who can be just that to lineup wide and put their hand down with only 1 assignment i.e.
Dee Ford
Trevor Reilly
Jeremiah Attaochu
DeMarcus Lawrence
Marcus Smith
Chris Smith
(Not a big an of Murphy, lacks explosion)

Some bigger sized hard hitting safeties
Deone Bucannon
Craig Loston
Vinnie Sunseri
Jonathan Dowling
Daniel Sorensen
Brian Blechen

Another Vet who could come in on a 1 year deal would be Dustin Keller as the new move TE

Keller would be a cheap option but I would want to make sure I got to see him run and cut before making a committment. That was a nasty knee injury he had

Moncrief is a guy who could turn into a star and we could likely get him in the 3rd unless the run on WRs starts really early.

As the WRs go he is the type of guy I would like. I'm not really interested in some guys like Jarvis Landry, Brandin Cooks etc

I would put my WR wishes like this:

1st Round:

Sammy Watkins
Mike Evans
Marqise Lee
Paul Richardson
Kelvin Benjamin

2nd Round:

Odell Beckham Jr
Allen Robinson
Davante Adams

3rd Round:

Donte Moncrief
Brandon Coleman
Jordan Matthews

What do you guys think of going after a guy like Zach Miller if he is a cap casualty in Seattle?

I think he is underutilized in Seattle where he is predominantly a blocker and a guy who will release on boot action.

I wouldn't be against it because I think he is an upgrade over Hooman and his price tag shouldn't be that big. I still think targetting a move guy either in FA like Keller or the draft like Amaro is important though

Zach Miller is one of the best receiving tight ends in the NFL. It's crazy how little he's used in an offense that has a young QB.

They still need Hooman. He's horribly underrated and Miller isn't a great blocking TE.

Loved Miller when he signed with Seattle and I even commented then that I thought it was strange he would choose to go to the TE wasteland that is Pete Carroll's offense. I'm on board with going for him. He's 28 so there's still good life left and he showed up big for Seattle in the limited role he had.
